Christmas dinners - anyone not having turkey???

I'm interested because I think we've (finally, after much hooing and hahing) decided to have a roast duck instead (with a nice zesty fruity stuffing like cranberry or suchlike).

We have roast chickens every couple of weeks so a turkey just doesn't seem special enough.

We were going to roast a goose until we found out how much they are (£60 - £70 on Ocado -eeek!)

So is anyone else doing anything different? My bro is vegan so my parents are all having a vegan Christmas dinner. I'm sure it will be delish as he's a great cook.

Christmas day 1 - Duck
Christmas day 2 - Goose & Gammon/Ham

Hideehi · 02/12/2006 13:18

We're having Chautbriand and bearnaise sauce, i think that's how you spell it lol

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 13:20

Chateaubriand?
I'm not sure, now I look at it
DH once saw it as Shat-O-Brian on a greek menu

Hideehi · 02/12/2006 13:23

We always have it our favourite restaurant so i'll not do it justice but am looking forward to it anyway !

texasrose · 02/12/2006 19:43

Pruni your beef sounds lovely (love the new name BTW dahling!) (as we're in pretentious mode, wma wma!!!)

I like Mr Fearnly-Whittingstall or whatever his name is. I think if you're going to eat meat, you owe it to the aminal to buy the most humanely-reared you can afford, and treat it with the respect it deserves. Hope it is a wonderful meal for you.

Wanderingstar that stuffing sounds fantastic. My FIL has all of Jamie's books so I'll have a rifle!

We are having duck. Don't ask me how and what with, that is MrMiaou's department

Skribble · 02/12/2006 20:00

I am doing chicken much nicer than turkey and a lot cheaper, but I will get a really nice one from the farm shop.

Marina · 02/12/2006 20:06

at Wossy and Nigella, we're having goose - about £40 from our butchers texasrose, I do think Ocado crank the prices up on this sort of thing
We'll probably do the Josceline Dimbleby recipe we do every year - with ginger, chili and spiced apple sauce. Dh's speciality and really delicious.

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 02/12/2006 21:07

I like turkey but its only the 3 DC and me, and the Dc wont eat much of it, so its not worth us having a turkey. I don't know what we will be having yet.

We will be having a ham joint though. I do love my ham joints at Christmas. MMMMM I can just taste it now, thick cut ham with home made chips, and eggs and fresh cooked bread. Yummy!

xmasmomma · 02/12/2006 23:19

duck too - never cooked one in my life though!

handlemecarefully · 02/12/2006 23:21

"BTW, Nigella Lawson said last night on J Ross show that not having turkey is a bit pretentious or something..... "

I must admit (don't wish to offend anyone on this thread so apologies in advance) she rocketted up in my estimation at that point

Sure Yorkiegirl - but I think Nigella meant people who go for a jolly spiffing goose dahling!

handlemecarefully · 02/12/2006 23:28

I think I have a prejudice about this because the last person I spoke to who was having goose for Christmas wore an alice band and a string of pearls - if you see what I mean!

taffy101 · 02/12/2006 23:32

we make a point of never having turkey cos its crap! V dry imo.
We once had delia's guinea fowl with 30 cloves of garlic, sometimes have fillet steak. might go for duck this year.
Never had goose would love to try it some time though.

handlemecarefully · 02/12/2006 23:35

Turkey isn't crap - you're just not cooking it right

taffy101 · 02/12/2006 23:37

TBH i've never cooked it. Just going by 20 odd years of my mum cooking it. Maybe you have a point

Skribble · 03/12/2006 20:42

I think she was making the point about people who try to outdo everyone and are a bit snobby about it. I have relatons like that who always go over the top and get a huge goos or whatever even though they only have 3 for christmas, when they come to use they usualy bring a prepacked salmon ring thing yuch!!

xmasmummy · 03/12/2006 20:47

handlemecarefully- i agree completely, turkey is lovely if you cook it right. which i do as im an excellent cook (wink)

xmasmummy · 03/12/2006 20:47
Wink

rib of beef here, none of us are keen on turkey.

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 03/12/2006 21:08

We do beef either rib or sirloin as we have a full turkey dinner at both my mums and then dp's mums and there is only so many turkey roasts I can have in one week!!!!

Mercy · 03/12/2006 21:25

I have decided to have roast beef this year. Dh doesn't eat meat and ds will only eat 'brown' meat, so we never have it basically. My mum and db will be here so I can justify the expense this year. Plus dd is looking foward to Yorkshire puddings!

What are the traditional thing to have with roast beef? Yorkshire pudding and horseradish sauce - anything else? I thought I might do a small cauliflower cheese and carrots.
