Swede love the Archbishop tree topper Xmas Grin

We have a gold/ivory angel that we bought on our first visit to Santa at a garden centre when DD1 started school. She graduated from university this year so it is practically an antique now.

Jimmy my decorations are nearly all from supermarkets/Wilkinson's with a few others bought on holiday. I just buy a couple of the really nice ones each year and have built up to a full tree worth over the last 10 years or so.

Chillywhippet · 26/09/2015 10:28

Wilha respect. They sound delicious.
You have inspired to be arsed to make mincemeat!

Last year's unfinished crochet snowflakes didn't get out of wardrobe yesterday as DD ran bath and then got distracted by playback of GBBO. Cue sound of shower in hall... Wait we don't have shower in hall...

15 bath towels and a mop and bucket and dismantling light fitting in downstairs loo which filled with water later, I went to bed. No poncing Sad

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/09/2015 10:36

Yikes Chilly that sounds dramatic. I feel a small part of your pain as I'm waiting on two ceilings being repainted after recent minor plumbing incidents.

Dried fruit is on the list for the supermarket shop this afternoon. I can't decide if I should stick with brandy for my soaking liquor or switch to amaretto. I make my cakes to give away and I don't know if my mum in particular would appreciate any changes.

HairsprayQueen · 26/09/2015 10:47

Didn't expect the Archbishop of Canterbury but I love it!

Oh no chilly, what a Friday night, bet you were exhausted!

Chillywhippet · 26/09/2015 10:48

Exactly woolly my poncing plans did not include replastering of ceilings. No.no. No. This morning it looks like we might get away with a bit of filling and painting but even that is not poncetastic. Not at all.

Will have to console (?spelling is that a ps4? bit tired) myself with a mooch around some shops' Christmas stock whilst kids at activities. Feel better already. Star Star

Wilhamenawonka · 26/09/2015 11:14

I'm not good with artsy craftsy stuff but am planning awesome hampers for friends

Whatabout · 26/09/2015 11:32

One year for our hampers we made and waxed our own cheese for people. Is that fairly high on the ponce-scale? I'm wondering how high the bar is set Xmas Smile

CiderwithBuda · 26/09/2015 11:36

I can't believe I missed the launch of the Poncetastic thread on Poncetastic day! Happy sigh. Christmas is coming!

Hi Zorion! Lovely to see you. I remember you and your wreath from last year. I had great plans to learn to crochet so I could make one. Guess what? Still can't crochet!

I'm a bit all over the place this year. We will be doing some decorating in a couple of rooms and I really want to get all that done before Xmas. I'm embarrassed to say but I have booked an interior designer and I'm waiting to see what she comes up with in next week or so. We have two rooms that we haven't managed to get right since we moved into the house four years ago and DH and I can't agree on anything. I end up giving in to his choice and then hating it so I popped into a local interior designer to have a chat and ended up hiring her. I'm hoping that doing it this way will say us money in the long term as we will hopefully get it right this time!

But I suppose waiting to see what interior designer comes up with is pretty Poncetastic! Blush

I did admit last year that I am a buyer in of ponce. I love decorating the house for Xmas and go overboard. Bought this house as I could visualise exactly where the tree would go.

I make my Xmas cake but haven't been successful at mince pies. Might make the mincemeat but buy pastry.

We have my sis, BIL, niece and poss my dad and MIL this year. They will all stay.

Time to start perusing Pinterest and making lists. I hope I get more in the mood as it's lacking at the moment.

Oh - raising a Wine to absent friends. Fellatio who started this all off all those years ago and DashingRedhead who wanted to ponce last year as she feared it would be her last Christmas and sadly she was right and she died this year. Wine to absent friends.

CiderwithBuda · 26/09/2015 11:37

Whatabout - I think that is as high as the bar has ever been!

ahbollocks · 26/09/2015 11:39

Wine cheers

butteredbarmbrack · 26/09/2015 11:50

Christmas with my parents this year - my mum is Queen of Christmas so we'll be poncing by proxy! DCs and I will be making our traditional shortbread in Christmas shapes for teachers and neighbours though, so I look forward to more ideas for poncetastic gifting.....Smile

On tree decorating though, firmly with those in the eclectic camp. Theme? Pah! Just pile it all on, more the merrier! We get a new dec from my DPs each year for our November wedding anniversary, and the DCs get a new one each every year too with their own box to store them. Remember my first Christmas not at home and with only a starter pack of baubles from Tesco - grim! My two should have their own random but sentimental selection for their first trees Grin

Icklepickle101 · 26/09/2015 11:59

I'm ready to start poncing!!

Will be 38 weeks -massive- Christmas Day so the next few weeks will be hardcore poncing!!

holmessweetholmes · 26/09/2015 12:18

Whoa - this thread is moving quite fast already! In awe of Zorion's crocheting and wreath-making skills! I'm a knitter rather than a crocheter, but I'm so slooow that anything I started now might be ready for next Christmas. If I'm lucky.

My current dilemma is where to put the Christmas tree. It would look really nice in the hall, which is quite big and sort of open-plan. But if we don't have it in the living room then we won't really want to sit around it for present opening . And before anyone suggests having a tree in both rooms... there is no earthly way dh will agree to that!

trixymalixy · 26/09/2015 12:27

Ooh I love this thread!

I'm repeating some of my poncing from last year as it was successful. My brussel sprout wreath was fab and I'm repeating the nutcracker theme from last year in the dining room as I handmade nutcracker themed stockings and bought a lot of nutcracker themed decorations.

This year I'm doing a rustic, white and silver theme in my lounge and want to make a tree skirt and some papercut decorations for on the mantelpiece and in a glass dome with battery tea lights behind it.

trixymalixy · 26/09/2015 12:43

And inspired by our trip to Denmark, I want to buy a Georg Jensen star for the top of the tree. Someone else down the thread was looking for a special tree topper, have a look at Georg Jensen.

Wilhamenawonka · 26/09/2015 12:53

whatabout you are officially my hero!

More ideas please

Paperblank · 26/09/2015 13:18

Wine to the poncers who have graced previous threads.

CiderwithBuda · 26/09/2015 13:19

I don't really stick to a theme exactly but have so many decorations I can change the look each year. It does involve buying some new bits to DH's disgust. But it keeps me happy!

We have some things we do the same every year - a table full of santas in the hall For instance. But I might change things around a bit this year.

CiderwithBuda · 26/09/2015 13:21

Trixymakixy - i have some Georg Jensen angels which I like. Will look for a star. Sounds expensive though!

It's hard to find anything nice for the top of the tree though.

Chillywhippet · 26/09/2015 13:45

Today's poncetastic charity shop purchases. A vintage sweet bowl and a not so vintage fruit one. They will have a turn at Halloween and then be brought out again come December.

And yes totally necessary to help me settle in new rather bling house so that I'm not homesick for old Scandi house Wink

What is not so poncetastic is they are sat on DD's puzzle folder on dog crate.

What's everyone's christmas cake recipe of choice?

I don't like a too rich fruit cake and have experimented with several over the years finally settling on a Nigel Slater recipe. I like a sweet cake though so I steep the fruit (and feed the cake) with a tawny port. The last two years we've actually eaten all the cake so I'm sticking with it.

Have done Delia/Nigella before with brandy or whisky but no-one here really likes it.

ahbollocks · 26/09/2015 15:42

Delia but with no booze and always 2-3 months before The Big Day. I love it :)

NoBarbaraGood · 26/09/2015 15:53

Dear me, September 25th seems to come earlier every year, doesn't it?!

I was very happy to see this thread today, the perfect companion for the dreary day we're having here.

For those of you looking to get started on wreath-making, here's a youtube video I found quite helpful:

For those of you with newborns who are still able to ponce, I am in awe.

And for those of you making your own cheese for hampers (Whatabout, this means you), I am not WORTHY!

NoBarbaraGood · 26/09/2015 15:56

Whoa.

I had No Idea that MN would embed the YouTube video like that.
