My lovely DiL is due to give birth to a little girl just before Christmas. It seems as though everyone is buying them baby things for Christmas gifts this year, but I want to do something just for her.
She plans to bf, so booze is out always the first thing I buy
so up until now all I can think of are lovely smellies (I am not a smellies person, so recommendations please), posh chocs, glossy magazines - should these be baby related, or a world away from babies?

I really want to make it special for her, so any new mums, what would you have loved? And anyone who has done this before - help!

Nothing constructive to add but wish I had you as a mil xx

NoMoreRenting · 18/09/2015 21:24

Oh yes to not on the high street. A friend has a small wall mural thing. It's a clock set to time of baby's birth and underneath it says something like, a moment in time that changed our lives forever. It looks beautiful on her wall. They have lots of birth commemorative stuff. Def have a look.

nickdrakeslovechild · 18/09/2015 21:27

Please adopt me, you sound so lovely! I have a dd born just before christmas. One thing that I had was a really nice christmas smelling candle, I have kept it half used and just having a sniff now reminds me of those first few weeks just snuggled up with her. So yes to a lovely candle.

Also I felt a bit cramped by all the flowers etc for pfb (I know that sound ungrateful) - everything was v hard (in retrospect maybe a touch of pnd) and it was a bit oppressive. Postman always knocked as I was napping and ran out of vases etc. A bouquet six weeks later however would have been lovely!

AsTimeGoesBy · 18/09/2015 22:03

It was 10 or so years ago when I read it, it was a freebie on a baby mag, but it was so upsetting I couldn't finish it.

Youarentkiddingme · 18/09/2015 22:09

Lovely idea.
How about as well as smelly stuff a nice fluffy dressing gown for those long cold winters days BF, pretty photo frame/photo album for those special family snaps they will take.
Slippers.
Nice warm gloves, hat and scarf as I suspect she'll want to go out for walks when well enough and we all know how cold hands get when pushing a pram!

What about a nice new set of bath towels? She will probably save and use them for after the post birth bleeding - when she's likely to need to replace the old ones?

CDs or I tunes voucher? Or maybe kindle voucher or whatever she likes for relaxing?

Btw - you sound lovely Flowers

evelynj · 18/09/2015 22:11

Love the 6 week flowers idea. And defo crap series DVDs to watch, or even good ones. Long ones too with many seasons-do they subscribe to Netflix or anything like that? Making a list of series with their IMDb ratings for consideration would be great.

I'd suggest some snack boxes which can be left in several rooms & are refillable, (small box raisins or granola, drink, crisps & Chocolate obvs

Realistically you've done enough already just by thinking about this x

OP you sound so lovely Flowers

FlopIsMyParentingGuru · 18/09/2015 22:13

You sound amazing.

The greatest gift to her will be that you have noticed her as a person who is special and individual rather than just the parent of your grandchild.

It's priceless.

Comingroundthemountain · 18/09/2015 22:15

I have this dressing gown and it is luffley

I hate smellys.

My dream list would include chocolate, a trickle of nice meals, a cleaner for the first 6 months, cosy clothing, a membership to audible or a few upbeat good books

Comingroundthemountain · 18/09/2015 22:32

I didn't read a book for three years after dc1 though - and was an avid reader before. Was just so very tired...

RJnomaaaaaargh · 18/09/2015 22:34

Oh I wish I had a mother in law like you op! So kind and thoughtful.

Toooldtobearsed · 19/09/2015 04:11

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas and kind words Smile

I am not that nice, just appreciate and love her and wanted to find a way of saying that she is still her, a person, not just a mum!

DS will be doing a lot of night feeds so will need to find him some wooly socks and munchies next Grin

What a lovely MIL you are! I wish mine was interfering old bag

GloGirl · 19/09/2015 07:25

Dry hair shampoo
Porridge sachets
Cereal bars
A nice water bottle

GeekyQueen · 19/09/2015 09:06

Does she have a phone/tablet to watch films on? If so, maybe a month pass to Now TV films?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and also have approx 90 pairs of PJ'S but would really appreciate some soft, stretchy PJ'S with buttons for feeding at night.

Lots of nibbly bits for easy grabbing when stuck feeding. Posh popcorn, chocolate, etc.

Ragwort · 19/09/2015 09:31

What lovely ideas - and it is so important to get gifts for yourself - the nicest presents I received were posh bath stuff etc - although it is lovely to receive 101 soft toys and enough baby outfits to fill mothercare I really wanted to be recognised still as an individual rather than a 'mother'. Perhaps that's just me though?

AsTimeGoesBy · 19/09/2015 09:36

I think it varies, I most definitely wasn't interested in smellies or other "me" stuff. All I wanted was baby-related things and practical stuff such as the aforementioned thermal mug.

Saltedcaramel4 · 19/09/2015 14:49

Multi vitamins?

shadesofwinter · 19/09/2015 18:54

I bought my SIL a necklace from Not on the High Street for the first Christmas after her DD was born (in November) - it was interlinking rings with her name, my brother's name and the baby's name. She loved it and still wears it every day, almost 3 years on. Only works if you know the baby's name though!

Agree with all the others who have said it's a lovely, thoughtful thing to do Smile

shadesofwinter · 19/09/2015 18:55

Oh that Etsy card is lovely LikeSilver - I'd have appreciated that so much!

Comingroundthemountain · 19/09/2015 20:45

If my dh bought me that card I would be made up

Deedeecupcake · 19/09/2015 20:56

I'm not a mum so this may be totally wrong! When I was working as an au pair the mum had just had a baby and one of her friends got her a downtown abbey box set and she said it was brilliant to throw on during the night feeds. So maybe a box set of something?
