What do you wear over Christmas?

What do you wear over the Christmas period - Christmas Day, but also Christmas Eve/Boxing Day?

I ask because my OH's family always spend the day in comfy clothes, sweatpants/pjs etc., whereas mine tend to dress up a bit. We've always been to a neighbour's party on Christmas Eve and to relatives' houses for Christmas Day so have to be smart-ish for those... but can't wear clothes that are too nice as we all get covered in hair from the large number of dogs present on both days!

Oh but Boxing Day is for slobbing/walking, unless we're visiting other relatives that day.

If we're at home I wear what I usually do : jeans nice top
If we're at someone else's I may wear jeans and a nicer top Grin

mrsmeerkat · 29/08/2015 14:21

I tend to just wear whatever is relatively new and still nice on christmas eve (so tapered trousers and nice top and good coat as I rush around and get hair blow dried - visit in laws etc)

Christmas day - dress for mass but after we eat dinner nice relaxed trousers and jumper

Boxing day - probably something similar to christmas eve

I do like to have a new dressier coat than usual (or nice cape or a scarf)

NewLife4Me · 29/08/2015 14:22

I usually find a nice dress but not an evening type.
Wear what you feel comfortable in.
If you prefer to be warm and cuddly a xmas jumper/nice jumper jeans or cords are great.

Musidora · 29/08/2015 14:24

Yes if we go to OH's for the day this year I'll try to fit in with them and not be overdressed... though I don't think I'd be comfortable in pjs. A Christmas jumper might be a good compromise...

Most years I wear something like a knitted dress. Smart-ish but comfy. I'd feel too casual in pyjamas but don't want to be too dressed up.

JeffsanArsehole · 29/08/2015 14:38

The only year we've ever had on our own we were in pyjamas, it was bliss.

Most years it's a frock and make up.

lavazzzalover · 29/08/2015 15:40

Im always home so jeans and hoody.

Wishful80smontage · 29/08/2015 15:47

Always dress up and like to wear something new for Xmas eve, day and Boxing Day buffet too but this year I'll have a very newborn baby to look after so I'm predicting a leggings/slub t shirt type effort maybe just oh's and dressing gown!

IAmSashaFierce · 29/08/2015 15:49

We normally dress up quite a bit.

I buy the DC and myself a christmas outfit or two and DH will normally get a new shirt or jumper to wear.

I like Christmas to be an occasion.

Usually the DC will then wear those clothes or a combination of them again on NYE or any parties we go to between Christmas and New Year.

Every1KnowsJeffHesUsuallyACunt · 29/08/2015 15:56

We don't dress up. Always jeans and a christmas jumper!

Pil dress up every year. When we go round, mil looks so uncomfortable, usually red faced, hot and sweaty. I can't understand why anyone would want to be uncomfortable given the volume of food and drink usually consumed!

123Jump · 29/08/2015 16:46

It's just DH, myself and 3 DC on CD, so jeans and a top. Some new stuff out of Hush and onesies later in the day though.

Badmumton · 29/08/2015 16:51

As a kid, my mum used to always buy us a new 'special' outfit for Christmas Day, so for most of my life since I have dressed up.

The last two years, we have gone away to a cottage over Christmas - just me, DH and the DC - and spent the day in our PJs (clean, new PJs, not the ones we sept in last night). Infinitely more fun! Grin. I am a convert to slobby Christmas Days now.

GoooRooo · 29/08/2015 16:56

I would LOVE to spend the day cosied up in PJs. Unfortunately MIL spends every sodding Christmas with us so I can't.

We just wear regular clothes. Nothing special.

SideOrderofChips · 29/08/2015 17:05

Clothes.

The kids like to dress up but thats about it

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/08/2015 17:58

The idea of sitting about, eating and cooking Christmas Dinner in my PJs makes me heave Blush

We have a Tradition where we dress up nicely for dinner. I'll put on jeans or leggings and a Christmas top to cook, but we eat when it's dark, all the candles lit. So I put on some makeup and earrings and something festive.

Last year I wore some M&S brocade leggings and a 'tasteful' Christmas Jumper (yes that is an oxymoron Xmas Grin )

I would love to have red nails but I can never grow mine and I'd worry if I bought false ones they'd end up in someones meal.............

AsTimeGoesBy · 29/08/2015 18:09

Normal clothes, loose fitting and cool, our house gets very warm with the oven on all morning and extra people around. Never stay in PJs though, I would associate that with being ill.

0pheliaBalls · 30/08/2015 23:03

We all dress up, even though it's only me, DH and 18yo DD. We have this tradition where DH opens the champagne at around 11am and gives me and DD a glass each to go off and get ready with. We wear new dresses - usually something long and flowy - and we put flowers or bits of Christmas greenery in our hair. It's a bit OTT but that's what makes it so fun! DH always gets a bit teary and tells us we look beautiful, which is always lovely Smile

boobubsmum · 30/08/2015 23:31

Here the kids have fancy frocks, grownups wear smartish jeans and top, I'd love to wear a dress but I'd look draftily overdressed and it's not practical for chasing tiny people round.

NeverNic · 31/08/2015 07:48

Same as Badminton. Mum taking us girls (individually) to shop for a Christmas outfit was an annual tradition. When we still believed we went for dinner the weekend before Christmas and wore the outfit and after that (before the pub called us in late teens) we wore it Christmas eve out for.dinner.

Nowdays it's a Christmas jumper Christmas eve and Christmas day morning (when visiting people). Christmas day proper it's normally something sparkly - like a thin jumper with nice leggings/ trousers or dressy top instead. I also like to wear stretchy dresses or tube skirts over opaque tights and dress up outfits with sparkly jewellery. I aim for something smart but practical for sitting on the floor with the children. Boxing Day is similar to Christmas Day though normally worn with boots rather than heels and less glitz. I channel alpine chic Grin with knitwear, skater skirts and often like something red in my outfit. I'm someone that has to have something new for both days. I love H&M for Christmas outfits and I plan my outfits in early December Blush

BiddyPop · 31/08/2015 08:37

Christmas Day is something nice but comfy and casual enough - a woollen dress and boots or heels, or nice black trousers and a good top. My good coat over it for mass and visiting. I often change when we get home (late afternoon) into something a bit more "lounging" for cooking and eating dinner in, but still nice.

I have a Christmas jumper that I wear with jeans a few different days around the holidays. Including our neighbour's Tacky Christmas Jumper Party before they leave for their home country for Christmas itself!

I have a few nice casual dresses for winter, or tunics over leggings, and plenty of jeans with a warm poloneck and nice scarf. I tend to alternate through those, although I also have to dress up "nicely" for a family dinner at my DGPs house (now DAunt's house where all 6 of the "Kids" (my Dad and his siblings), their various DPs and all their DCs who are around, and the DGCs, gather - so it's anything from 18 to 29 people).

I have 3 nice pairs of casual boots, my hiking boots and a couple of pairs of flat shoes that tend to be used mostly, occasionally it's a runners day. Heels for Christmas Day and again for the big family gathering are almost inevitable (either my high heeled boots or actual stiletto shoes).

ChristmasZombie · 01/09/2015 11:31

I like to wear something a bit festive. I have quite a selection of Christmas-themed jumpers, tshirts and dresses, and accessories, which vary in their tastefulness (or lack thereof!).
This year I think I'm going to wear my hideous Primark Christmas sweatshirt on Christmas Eve. It's absolutely awful! It's got the lot: glitter, lurid cartoon Santa, scary-looking snowman, random candy cane decorations..! I love it! I'll swap it for a more tasteful M&S number for church. This one is a lovely knitted jumper with sequinned snowflakes on it.
Christmas Day I'm going to wear my Percy Pig Christmas jumper. You know the M&S pig mascot? It's him, with a Santa hat. I got it last year, and though it was particularly funny, because I was pregnant.
New Year's will probably be pajamas!

I get the kids' Christmas outfits in the Next sale each year. This year the toddler has a Santa tshirt and hat, and the babies have elf outfits!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 01/09/2015 14:22

Me and ds are on our own at Christmas and we both end up just wearing Christmas PJ's (usually Rudolph ones Grin ) and Christmas jumpers with jeans or whatever. Oh, and of course, obligatory cracker hats.

Probably a good thing we don't go anywhere Grin

DinosaursRoar · 01/09/2015 14:29

For those of you who go for dresses, do you put shoes on, even if you're staying at home? I don't really do shoes indoors and DH would question where we are going but lots of my dresses don't look right with slippers! I've gone for "nice jeans and top" for the last few years (we've been at home hosting everyone else and probably will be again this year, think it's PIL's 'turn').

Actually, typing that out, I realise what I really need is fancy Christmas slippers... Grin

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 01/09/2015 14:34

Dino I used to have the most awesome Christmas slippers - big plush Christmas trees with tinsel, baubles and flashing lights Grin Blush

You can get some cute ballet pump style Rudolph ones Wink

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/09/2015 14:46

I fancy the M&S paisley brocade slippers , like a Smoking Jacket for the feet.
I'd probably fall and break my legs in them though .
