dd1 is Mary in their school nativity this year, she would much rather be a narrator as 'Mary just wanders about with a baby and doesn't even get to say anything'

Now I know she should wear blue and white, but which way round - anybody got any stunning (simple) ideas? ta

Think is traditionally white body and blue head dress, but prepared to be told I am wrong. Can you buy or borrow a white towelling dressing gown, and add blue cord belt? Blue teatowel fine for headdress, again with blue cord tie. HTH

Klara · 17/11/2006 16:25

ummm - a blue sheet (or white one dyed in the washing machine) with a hole cut out of the middle...arms out the side....nice bit of braiding/cord round waist as a belt to tie it in. Sandals...baby jesus (dolly) in a blanket and a white headscarf thingy?

JackieNo · 17/11/2006 16:25

Yes - agree with panda - white dress and blue cloak/headdress.

Mumpbump · 17/11/2006 16:28

If you do a google image search for "virgin mary" there are lots of piccies with all different colours. Must say that I had always thought it was a blue dress with white headdress. (Thinks back to last series of Lost.)

lucycat · 17/11/2006 16:28

ooh I like the dressing gown idea - I've got a fortnight to get this sorted. Right white bottom half and blue top ok

and lots of wundaweb

you could buy a metre of blue material from habberdashery for head piece only cost a few pound

lucycat · 17/11/2006 16:29

so blue bottom half and white top - am I going to burn in eternal flames if I get this wrong?

Just had a flick and they have pictures of VM both ways round, so I guess you can do whatever is easiest...

lucycat · 17/11/2006 16:34

goodo!

although the way she's charging round the house like a lunatic she's not being very serene and mary like

the robin costume for reception was much more fun!

when i was at primary (which was not that long ago) it was white dress with blue head piece covering the shoulders and pinned under the chin

poppynic · 17/11/2006 16:38

Saw a good letter in the paper suggesting that the government might now object to Mary wearing a head covering at all!! Be careful.

lucycat · 17/11/2006 16:42

oh crap

Dd was Mary last year and wore a blue dress and blue head scarf made from Granny's bedsheet. It's being used again this year as they asked if they could keep it

might just go and have a look at those Jo - she's a tall 6 1/2 so a lot of places don't do old enough 'dressing up' stuff - maybe I'll get some inspiration then head off into the market to the fabric stall.

I've never had to do Mary ....5 DSs and only DD was always an angel, I'm sure Mary wears a blue dress & white head-dress.

Beksmum · 17/11/2006 22:53

Hi another cheat option are Woolworths they do all the costumes right down to the donkey! Haven't hear what my ds is going to be yet so may be back for suggestions! Good luck Beks

MrsApron · 17/11/2006 23:20

mothercare are doing a cracking outfit, It's not online though but was on the back page of their xmas catalogue.

Sparkler1 · 17/11/2006 23:23

DD2 was Mary at preschool last year. I went to a charity shop and bought a blue/white pillowcase and duvet set really cheap. Cut holes in pillowcase for arms and head - it was a bit long for her so cut a bit off the end and used it as a tie to go around a blue and white teatowel that I already had. Sorted and she looked really cute.

Joceybean · 18/11/2006 08:11

Woolies also have nativity costumes, including Mary with a baby for £10 sizes 3-7 yrs.

hotpot · 19/11/2006 22:13

I don't know if I am the only Catholic to post but Mary in MY school was blue dress with white head dress.

Alas I was never Mary, always an angel - seriously mis-cast and no, no I am NOT bitter!!!

I am planning to cheat, there are many fancy dress places so I will be buying, I just don't have the artistic skills required for this type of thing. Plus I have boys, so am looking forward to the only bit I feel I am capable of doing which is paint on a fake beard or mustache!!

curlew · 19/11/2006 23:14

Oh please don't start me on buying nativity play costumes!!!! Before we know where we are all the plays will look the same - and Mr Tesco will be even richer!!!!! Surely the whole point is that the costumes are home made from bits and pieces and from charity shop stuff - £10 for each child is a fortune for some people!
Mary - old blue sheet, or white sheet dyed blue. Cut a piece twice the length of the child. Slit for head, glue or sew up the sides, white cord round the waist, white, blue or white and blue teatowel for a head dress. Sorted. Ditto for shepherd, angel, kings, Joseph in different colours and with tinsel, gold card, wings, beards as appropriate. Don't line the big shops pockets - do it yourself!

lucycat · 20/11/2006 12:59

ok I've bought some lovely blue velvet material for £1.99 from the ends bin in Dunelm Mill, that'll be great for the dress, if it's not long enough then It'll be for the headdress

2 metres of lining fabric for the dress/headress and about amile of wundaweb

Here we go!

Another Catholic here
hotpot - that's what I'd say too

stringbean · 20/11/2006 13:57

If you don't want to make one, Sainsbury's has nativity costumes this year - there's a Joseph, a Mary, a king and a donkey. I think they're about £9 each.
