dd1 is Mary in their school nativity this year, she would much rather be a narrator as 'Mary just wanders about with a baby and doesn't even get to say anything'

Now I know she should wear blue and white, but which way round - anybody got any stunning (simple) ideas? ta

We made blue dress out of a sheet folded in half and used an old net curtain for the head dress
(was very basic though!)

DimpledThighs · 20/11/2006 19:57

am jealous - ds just got home and told me he is a bird!

Lucycat · 20/11/2006 20:02

She's actually not too impressed - they had a rehearsel today and she doesn't get to say anything - she can't even knock on the innkeeper's door - Joseph gets to do that

She wants to be a narrator! I've told her that in the future she'll be able to say that she was Mary in the nativity, but it's not cutting much mustard at the mo!

Dimpled - what sort of bird? my dd was a robin in reception!

Not Catholic, but agree with Hotpot and Mrs Dolittle about the blue/white.

DD has just got a book that comes with cut out fronts and backs and lots of squares of material so you can design all the costumes - (WHSmith if you're interested). Anyway Mary also has a bit of gold about her white headress - which I think is appropriate being she was is the Virgin Mother of Jesus. And perhaps with a bit of gold Lucycat your DD may be more into being Mary.

We have a mouse nad a sheep for the rainbow one no idea about school yet but its dd1s last year at the school and she hasn't had a part yet and I don't think dd2 will be in it .

curlew · 20/11/2006 21:08

My dd has ALWAYS been a narrator (usually dressed as a shepherd or on one memorable occasion, as a sheep) - good reader, calm reliable type, guaranteed not to get stage fright or forget her lines, and had reconciled herself to never having a glamorous part. Then tonight she came flying out of Brownies telling me that her very last Brownie 'event" is the Nativity play - she's 11 on the 21st December and she's going to be Mary! SHe is SOOOOO happy!!! Never too old........!

Lucycat · 21/11/2006 10:42

ahhh that's lovely curlew, I'm really pleased for you both!!

My dd sounds like yours, I think the reason she was chosen was partly beacuse she can be relied on not to prat about or pull silly faces - she will also know everyone elses lines and where they should be and when

I'm taking the material to my mum - she
a) has a sewing machine and
b)has some idea of what to do to make a costume that will last a couple of performances!

I like the gold trim idea thanks for that vanillamilkshake!

So glad we don't have this. Apparantly PP1 are angels in the school play, and costumes are already provided - phew!

I was Mary in school play when I was about 6. I wore blue and white. I was also disappointed to find what a small part Mary actually has. I got to say one line which I still remember!!! "Do we travel alone Joseph?" Joseph got to say loads more.

I am impressed you can buy all these outfits int he shops now.

megandsoph · 21/11/2006 10:52

There is a mary costume in woolies

hulababy · 21/11/2006 10:56

The Mary costume in Woolworths is very fancy! Jospeh costume is a bit more traditional.

MrsBadger · 21/11/2006 11:00

I think Woolworths have their manufacturing spec mixed up and ordered a Mary Mary Quiet Contrary outfit...

MrsBadger · 21/11/2006 11:01

Quite Contrary, even

Cappuccino · 21/11/2006 11:03

if this is too late then sorry; you seem to have a plan with your mum's machine

I literally lay dd1 down on a big bit of blue fleece when she was Mary and drew round her. Big batwing sleeves. And then cut out two bits and sewed them together. White teatowel with tinsel round to keep it on.

after the nativity I cut the costume up to make fleece nappy liners for dd2

they wore unstructured garments at the dawn of Christianity, anyway. No-one had discovered the miracle of modern tailoring

Lucycat · 21/11/2006 11:48

lol at 'unstructured garments' cappucino!

if it's left to me they would be very 'unstructured'

DD1 (age 4) is Mary too - and not that happy about it as she'd rather have a pretty fairy/angel type costume like her friends.

She'll be wearing ... a large blue t'shirt of my husbands turned inside out so that the logo doesn't show) safety pinned at the neck at the back to keep it on her shoulders. I'm tying a bit of old rope around her waist for a belt and she's wearing ballet shoes on her feet (she rejected my idea of her wearing her fake Ugg type slippers from Next!). Over her head I'm draping an old bit of muslin that I got from goodness knows where and kept for this kind of occasion. I'm not sure how to keep it on though - either with a white hairband over the top or with some kerby hairgrips perhaps? That's it. It looks pretty similar to all the dressing costumes in the shops but I didn't think it was worth spending anything at all on an outfit that there's no way that she'll be ever wanting to wear again as it's so plain and ungirly!

arfur · 23/11/2006 23:38

My dd is Mary (she is 7) and was thrilled to get the 'star' part as she has loads of lines (bit of an updated version of the trad story she has to do a face with hands on hips at Joseph when he cant get a room lol). However I saw the costume today in school and she hasnt yet. I am preparing for nuclear fallout when she claps eyes on the navy tunic and plain white headscarf whilst most of the other kids are in party frocks with sparkly bits. Cant wait

Tortington · 24/11/2006 00:40
