Good Lord, I've just received an e-mail from a friend with a link to her Christmas present wishlist

Is this normal? Is the mania for control-freakery about presents extending from weddings to christmas and birthdays? Will it one day be bad manners to buy a gift spontaneously for someone, without checking their wishlist first?

FFS, am I just a terrible old fart who ought to get over it?

I agree with the send a donkey, cow or other farmyard animal link. That'll teach her!

gscrym · 13/11/2006 13:11

I do have an Amazon wishlist for DS, seeing as we have lots of child free friends and a few who live far away. I would only refer someone to it if they asked. They've found it quite handy seeing as they don't have to worry about postage.

My wishlist is:-
Orlando Bloom
A nanny for when I'm busy with Orlando
A visa card with no limit and no repayments
A holiday home on Necker Island, which Richard Branson would give to me because he much prefers Skegness!

missymoosal · 13/11/2006 14:02

So what if she comes on mn she needs an ice cold dose of reality check and what a way to get it.
Hopefully her cheeks would burn for days with the shame of it all.
She could save on her heating bills and help the environment all in one
Go on go on go on go on (father ted)you know you want to.

Carmenere · 13/11/2006 14:09

So what is this friend of yours like normally? How do you know her? I mean I can't think of a situation other than a wedding that anyone would have the nerve to do this. Definitely tell her that you were going to buy her a gift but now you will be buying a goat for a third world village instead.

meowmix · 13/11/2006 14:13

we've got wishlists on Amazon for DS and me and DH but thats because we live abroad and its easiest for our parents/families that way. Plus books are RARE here. But even so I'd never send it to my friends, apart from anything else I'd never live it down!

Oooh, nice one, Pruni.

WhizzBangCaligula · 13/11/2006 14:27

LOL at buying someone a sack of shit for Christmas.

She is a bit of a control freak tbh (imagine your surprise). But I've just realised it's an Amazon wish-list, so not as bad as I first thought. Still a bit bad though, as it was unsolicited. And as she has bought the kids stuff without asking me what they'd like, fair enough as long as you accept other people can do the same for you...

She so needs to be outed, she is so far up her anus.
Try to find a way to open the link you owe it to us all, the tantalising thought of what might be on it is driving me potty

LemonTart · 13/11/2006 14:33

For close friends and family, we have a "only buy for the children" rule now we all have our own kids. Works a treat and saves the embarrassment of not knowing whether they will buy for each and every one of you. Lot cheaper too - and saves me stressing over the wine/book/chocs/soap debate for adult gifts.

cheeryface · 13/11/2006 14:37

i would never have the nerve!

i have been known to give dh a list though, but he did ask for it

in fact he has bought me something without any hinting for this year....god knows what it could be!

BUT, I have TO KNOW what is on your friends list, the cheeky mare!

nogoes · 13/11/2006 14:46

She sounds scary.

fortyplus · 13/11/2006 14:48

14 Snowman Road
Lapland

fortyplus · 13/11/2006 14:57

My sil always says can we check with her first to make sure it's something she wants - she doesn't like opening things she doesn't like. She's a witch.

nailpolish · 13/11/2006 15:04

omg fortyplus - how shallow

fortyplus · 13/11/2006 15:06

Very materialistic, I'm afraid. Not much point in buying her anything cos if it costs less than a grand she won't want it

nailpolish · 13/11/2006 15:07

jeez

what do you do with people like that?

i just want to shake them into seeing sense

fortyplus · 13/11/2006 15:08
