Boxing Day. Pyjama day or hit the sales?

I work in retail.

Christmas rota has just gone up.

So the poor folk that are working Boxing Day are starting work at 5am.

Really, why the heck would you need to be shopping at 6am on Boxing Day morning.

Pyjama day for me this year:)

Isn't it M&S that always used to be closed on Boxing Day regardless of the sales and who else was open? I think they do it now at selected stores, but in previous years I think it was all branches. I wish more would be brave enough to do this, especially when we have internet shopping now.

jenmcspen · 04/12/2014 08:35

John Lewis doesn't open on boxing day (other than 1 or 2 stores like the trafford centre that are tied into contracts with the shopping centres).

saltedcaramelicious · 04/12/2014 08:40

Can't think of anything worse than shopping on Boxing Day. I work my arse off all year and get up at 6am most days so the idea of getting up early on Boxing day to fight crows makes me shudder! Just had a load of stress sorting xmas, why would I want to do it all again just a few days later....

ChippingInAutumnLover · 04/12/2014 08:40

Not a hope in hell. I hate shopping at the best of times, let alone the worst of times. I agree that the shops should be closed, and on the 27th so that the staff can go home as soon as they close to the public on Christmas Eve and go in late on the 27th to set up for the 28th. At the earliest. January sales were fine, for those so inclined.

Boxing Day here is a lovely relaxing day to play games, read books, eat left overs and easy food.

bryonyelf · 04/12/2014 10:19

I am against shops being open on Boxing Day. I really feel for the staff. When I was on JSA they asked me to go for an interview for chritmas staff at next. I told them no way and they could stop the allowance if they wanted to but I had a tiny child and there was nothing that could make me work the hours they wanted. Thankfully they understood.

I don't mind a bit of looking on the internet on Boxing Day - in fact we needs new bed but going out I the middle of the night, definitely not.

HolgerDanske · 04/12/2014 11:02

I work in retail too. Thankfully we don't open on Boxing Day. I think it's utterly ridiculous that it's still such a big deal, tbh. It's not like it used to be where there were only a couple of sales in the year. I think everything should shut down for two days so that everyone could have a proper two days off with friends and family. Whatever it is can wait till the 27th IMO.

For me it should always, always be a pyjama day.

Poolomoomon · 04/12/2014 13:09

Always a pyjama day. IMO Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day everything should be closed and everyone should get time with their families. I appreciate that's idealistic of me, especially Christmas Eve with the 'last minute shoppers' (if they still exist which really, with the internet they shouldn't!). But that's the way I see it.

There are certain stores that close Boxing Day. DH's work only close Christmas Day. The owner did try keeping it open Christmas Day one year but there was only one or two customers the whole day so because it made him no profits he didn't do it again Hmm. It's a sad world we live in, where profits are always put before humans. A Christmas carol...

popcornpaws · 04/12/2014 15:45

In previous years i have worked xmas eve and hogmany until 8pm to tidy up the shop after a busy day, we also open on new years day, and its busy and tons of people always say "i can't believe your open, thats terrible eh?" well piss off then and they might rethink the festive opening hours!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/12/2014 16:02

Neither, as we'll be visiting family. I'd also shut the shops on Boxing Day though. I used to work in retail and hated the Christmas hours!

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 04/12/2014 22:42

No sales shopping here. I like discount codes for current season stuff but hate end of season sales. Anything decent has already sold out anyway. Lots of places have sales before Christmas Boden joules etc.

Boxing Day we go to the rugby club. The dad's play against dad's from the other teams. There's a buffet of food we've all brought along and the bar is open. We then go to my grandparents for another buffet.

It always amazes me those who've been shopping right up to Christmas Eve and then go out again on Boxing Day. I suspect my 17yr old ds would like to go into the city centre to spend his vouchers/cash but he can wait a day or two.

pippahooper · 04/12/2014 22:43

I couldn't think of anything worse than going to the shops on boxing day. Its not a pj day here either. Our whole family get together on boxing day. Normally the only time we all get together x

BathshebaDarkstone · 04/12/2014 22:46

Neither, a walk in the park. It's a tradition started in my family when I was a kid, my uncle, aunt and cousins would come and we'd go for a walk in the park with my dad. Now it's just me and the DC. Xmas Smile

Starlightbright1 · 04/12/2014 22:49

I am not one to not do something on principal but this is something I don't do is go shopping on boxing day.

My only exception would be if I needed medicine for me or my DC.

Pipbin · 04/12/2014 22:56

Do they get paid the normal rate Southern, or is it enhanced with it being a Bank Hol?

Any extra pay for working Sundays or bank holidays is long gone.

zaphod · 04/12/2014 22:59

Stephens's Day is my favourite day of the year. I absolutely refuse to go shopping that day. It's wrong. A day for chilling out and so not fair to those who work in retail.

trixymalixy · 04/12/2014 23:04

Pyjamas, leftovers, chocolates, board games and films on the tv.

dancingwitch · 04/12/2014 23:38

It isn't just the 5am start time, it is the fact staff have to get there for that time when there is no public transport. I think some shops in central London provide coaches to get their staff to work but obviously you have to get to where the pick up point is.

NCIS - some train companies do run trains on 26th so it may be worth checking.

NCIS · 05/12/2014 08:15

Unfortunately not on her line, but I'd feel a bit mean making her go on the train as she's working a night shift that day, at least she can doze in the car. I might make the whole family come with me so I have some company in the car on the way back.

princesscupcakemummyb · 05/12/2014 22:49

yeah right stuff sales i like boxing day to be a lazy family day pjs food and festive films

MeAndMySpoon · 05/12/2014 23:18

The worst, the very worst thing about Christmas telly is the incessant adverts on Christmas Day, exhorting us to spend yet more money. AngrySad Makes me feel physically sick. I can't imagine going shopping on Boxing Day - I'm probably still reeling a bit from spending too much in December.

apotatoprintinapeartree · 05/12/2014 23:23

I'd have a pyjama day.
Unless you're the idiots there at 5am most stuff has gone later, to leave the summer stuff they couldn't sell.
The bargains are early morning and obviously popular sizes sell first.

I know there are other things than clothes but they seem to be the main attraction in sales.

apotatoprintinapeartree · 05/12/2014 23:25

Anyway, you all have to be in at 3.30 and again at 9pm to see my dd on tv Grin

GaryShitpeas · 05/12/2014 23:35

People who go shopping on Boxing Day are sad fuckers

Have they not done enough shopping in the run up to Christmas. Jeez Hmm

I really feel for the staff as well.

TSSDNCOP · 06/12/2014 11:43

I work in retail and the obsession with bargain hunting and this need to shop on Boxing Day flummox me completely. Why would you spend hundreds on your kids gifts and then drag them round the shops the day after they get them?

Why would anyone go yo the shops, fight to park, queue for everything, get stuck in traffic leaving when you can shop online using your brand new ipad/Kindle Fire and shovelling heroes in yourself?

And finally, there's no bargains left. Retailers have been gouging people for cash every weekend since October. All that's left is total tatt.

LadySybilLikesCake · 06/12/2014 12:21

I work in the media and get triple pay on Christmas Day (I'll be working a few hours from home in the morning) and double pay on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Boxing Day's going to be me, DS, movies and chocolate.

It wouldn't kill business to let the staff have one extra day off. I've worked in retail before now, my sister had worked in retail for 24 years until recently. In the 24 years she's been forced to work every single Christmas Eve and Boxing Day apart from one, when she was in hospital after an emergency C section. Her old boss had never worked Christmas Eve or Boxing Day.
