Boxing Day. Pyjama day or hit the sales?

I work in retail.

Christmas rota has just gone up.

So the poor folk that are working Boxing Day are starting work at 5am.

Really, why the heck would you need to be shopping at 6am on Boxing Day morning.

Pyjama day for me this year:)

I wish shops weren't open Boxing Day. I feel sorry for people made to work in the shops.

BadtzMaru · 03/12/2014 21:43

Lazy day here, we are out visiting family on Christmas day so boxing day will be a quiet day for us, probably attempting to remove various toys from the packaging while cursing toy manufacturers if last year is anything to go by Grin. Might stretch to taking DD's new scooter for a spin round the park if it's not raining.

sooperdooper · 03/12/2014 21:48

God no, it wouldn't occur to me to go shopping on Boxing day, ugh what a horrid thought!!

DH is going to the football with his brother, I'm mooching happily in my PJs and eating chocolate then we're all going to the ILs for Boxing day evening :)

Nerf · 03/12/2014 21:56

Going to the Nutcracker. Hate all the scrumming in sales and it's all such a con.

turdfairynomore · 03/12/2014 21:58

DS works in next sales It's good money for a 16yo!! Some current stock does go into sale-his job before the sale is to mark the sale price and colour of sale label on the price tag in pencil. Then on sale days he does crowd control and picks up stuff continually!!

Rosvita · 03/12/2014 21:58

Unfortunately I will be starting a 13 hour shift at 7.30am Boxing Day morning, missing out on visiting family,so no sales shopping here fr me!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/12/2014 22:01

All of this shopping before Christmas including Black Friday and other sales, one day off and it's back to shopping. :(

No, I won't be shopping.

NCIS · 03/12/2014 22:06

No have never bothered with Boxing Day sales, this year I will be driving round the M25 to deliver DD back to her place as she's working a night shift and there are no trains AFAIK

MindReader · 03/12/2014 22:15

No I wouldn't shop on Boxing Day.
I hate crowds and aggression.
Some amazing bargains, but not many and much of the stuff is old tatty stock anyway.
Years ago the Boxing Day sales were really something but now it is much more spread out through the year.

I would possibly shop online for amazing bargains as I missed Black Friday this year as I had poorly children Sad

Pyjamaface · 03/12/2014 22:18

I can never be bothered to go shopping on Boxing Day, I'll have a look a few days later and if that means I miss the bargain of the century then so be it.

It does make me smile a bit though when people say how terrible it is that shops are open/poor shop workers with no xmas but will still merrily go out for a meal/theatre/pub/football etc. What about those workers? Are they less deserving of a couple of days off?

ParisWhenItSizzles · 03/12/2014 22:21

No way. Next which has gone down the pan in recent years are the ones that started this rubbish. It was bad enough on New Year's Day...

CaulkheadUpNorth · 03/12/2014 22:23

I went shopping on Boxing Day last year. I had spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone and had to see another person! It was hideous.

DillydollyRIP · 03/12/2014 22:23

Next clothes have year and season numbers on the tags so you can see how old an item is.
I hate post christmas sales.

revealall · 03/12/2014 22:39

Bleurgh. Why anyone wants more shopping after the incessant buying of November/ December is beyond me.
We have outlet stores not far away so I pick up bargins whenever I NEED something...not just because.

And most stuff comes down again by Janurary so it isn't even the best time for give away prices.

fuzzpig · 03/12/2014 22:56

I went once when my dad was there with the car, DH got staff discount in the shop we went to and we went to the supermarket too. Pointless though really as it wasn't anything actually worth getting. Except decent wrapping paper but that hangs around for a few weeks after Xmas anyway.

There are so many sales at this time of year that Boxing Day (or what used to be January) sales are pretty meaningless IME.

Anyway I'm looking forward to Boxing Day. Will be different this year as we will be at my mum's but normally it's just chilling out and watching the new DVDs, playing the new games, eating the leftover sandwich (which I love even more than the actual Xmas dinner!) etc :)

Kaekae · 03/12/2014 23:01

I never go shopping on Christmas Day, feels wrong. I like to embrace Christmas with my family and going shopping to save a few quid is not worth it. Boxing day is like another Christmas day for us.

Kaekae · 03/12/2014 23:02

Oops that was suppose to read Boxing Day not Christmas Day! Grin

MorrisZapp · 03/12/2014 23:04

I assume the leftover sandwich is a sandwich made with leftovers.

As opposed to a sandwich which has been left over.

fuzzpig · 03/12/2014 23:13

Ha, yes you'd be right Morris :o

It's a part baked baguette with turkey, sausages in bacon, stuffing, cranberry jelly and mayo.

chanie44 · 04/12/2014 06:50

I'm a sale shopper here. Back in my pre-children/mortgage days, I'd hit the shops bright and early. Plus I do the 5am next sale.

I don't mind going though, as I plan it like a military operation, from what I wear, what shops I go to first, where I park etc. I'm a professional.

LynetteScavo · 04/12/2014 06:57

No way!

Although we did pop into Currys to but a TV on the way to in laws for our 2nd Christmas dinner last year. Not sure if we got a bargain as I wasn't paying Grin

lbsjob87 · 04/12/2014 07:14

I used to work in retail, for a company that really knew how to sap your Christmas spirit. We had to decorate trees in October, but by the second week of December they had gone to make way for the Spring gardening range!
Too many big retailers think that profit should come above staff morale, whereas if no-one opened till the 27th, no-one would be able to buy anything, no-one would go bankrupt and staff might get a Christmas.
Having said that, I did once buy a dishwasher on Boxing Day, because mine died on Christmas Day and I was expecting 12 people for dinner, but if it hadn't been an option, I guess I would have had to wash up by hand (the horror- more likely I'd have fed them all McDonalds instead!)

meglet · 04/12/2014 07:15

No shopping on Boxing Day, or eating out, football, theatre etc. I don't agree with constant spending. The staff need a couple of days off.

I worked in retail for many years and we told our boss where to go when they suggested opening on Boxing Day, not extra pay, just a day off in lieu.

HoHoHappyHolidays · 04/12/2014 07:48

I worked at Next as a Christmas temp in 2007. At 7.30pm on Christmas eve we were all still working and were told we couldn't leave until the shop was ready for boxing day :(

Please don't judge me: I told them my dad was in hospital and visiting hours close at 9pm so I had to leave right now to get to him in time- they straight away let me go so I ran home to be with my family :D I told my dad what I did, he still let me have my presents :D

On Boxing Day another employee told me they were there until 10.30pm :O

TheFantasticMrsFox · 04/12/2014 08:24

We go beating. We are furnished with port and sausage rolls, DH, DS, the dogs and I get to mix with like minded folk and burn off some of the excesses of Christmas Day. Once we're done we spend the evening in our PJs by the fire, eating leftovers and chocolate and drinking more port :)
The idea of going to the sales leaves me cold
