I'm still struggling for ideas & dp hasn't a clue either.

She doesn't really do fancy food, or nice stuff she saves 'for best' so it doesn't get used.

Best I've come up with so far is some sort of soap trivia or quiz book...

A scarf from m&s and some flowers delivered in Christmas Eve.

That's my effort - if he wants to do anything else he can sort it, but that way she has something she'll like.

Oh and we're buying their Christmas dinner from m&s as FIL has just had an enforced retirement and they're skint

Mrsgrumble · 24/11/2014 05:44

Dh sorts the In laws but I am very fond of mil and she is elderly and doesn't get to shop apart from local supermarket so I usually make up a hamper and also gift voucher for local independent clothes shop so she an get herself a top or whatever.

I have previously bought china mugs etc and she's says they are too good - she's the polar opposite to my mother who turns her nose up at everything and gets into a mood if enough money hasn't been spent

Last year I filed the hamper with hand soap, shower gel, fruit cake, tea towels, chocolates, tea, coffee, baileys, whiskey etc (she loves a hot whiskey)

She was delighted with it.

gingysmummy · 24/11/2014 07:16

I've bought my mil a slow cooker as she often works 100 miles away from home.My mil is a lot easier to buy for than my own dm as my mil has so many hobbies.Maybe a prima or good housekeeping mag subscription would go down well op? or a gift voucher for her favorite hairdressers?

sandgrown · 24/11/2014 07:32

I am a MIL and usually get fab presents from family. I like magazine subs. Tickets for concerts or theatre vouchers. Nice moisturiser I would not buy myself. Spa days, facials or afternoon tea. I still write letters so I like nice stationery. Modern scarves. I do not like scented soap or bath cubes or sponges . I bought my MIL a digital radio which was well received after years with a crackly transistor.

lanbro · 24/11/2014 07:38

£30 M&S voucher plus a mug with the kids on. Tbh she'd be happy with just the mug but she does a lot for us and we love her dearly.

ohtheholidays · 24/11/2014 07:46

My Mil is cat mad.Always rescuing them, she's very good at what she does.

Doesn't do perfume,alcohol,fancy food,books anything really.

Bought her a lovely kitten ornament,a cup with kittens on and some matching coasters and bought a nice gift box to put it all in to.
I've also bought her a gift set with some nice hand creams in.
I know that probably sounds really boring but she'll love it.Also going to send her some flowers as well. They live just over 200 miles away from us so we don't get to see them at Christmas sadly.

KikitheKitKat · 24/11/2014 08:00

I want to be KiaOra's MIL!

My MIL is in her 80s and doesn't really want anything (and her home is chock-full of stuff), but she likes a nice bit of fruit cake, so I make her a CHristmas cake every year and it lasts her for months and she really appreciates it. Other than that maybe a calendar or some Vitamin E cream from Superdrug which she uses a lot. Easy to please my MIL Smile

DaisyFlowerChain · 24/11/2014 08:02

I do a pick and mix bag as she doesn't get much to open on the day so like to get lots of little things. It will have her favourite hand cream and chocolates and then this year I've added some quirky slippers, book, dvd etc.

DaffodilField · 24/11/2014 11:22

Microwave. No idea what a McRobbie is!

lucysmam · 24/11/2014 11:36

Hand and nail care bits may be a good idea - not fancy stuff that'll be kept for best (and never used) but maybe some everyday stuff plus a few nail polishes all nicely wrapped.

A cup would be a good one too - she drinks her coffee out of a cup not much bigger than an espresso cup though so may be hard to find but will have a hunt.

The girls usually make something as well, not calendars though this year - have done photo ones in the past
& they never get put up.

Thank you all for your ideas! Smile

A photo book of the kids from this years family activities.
Elemis face cream.
A book by her favourite author.
Homemade Christmas stuff from the kids.
Box of chocolates.

GirlAnachronism · 24/11/2014 13:05

Pic of our family (her request)
little mermaid dvd
war horse dvd
gold covered leaf necklace
home made peppermint creams
probably a picture made by the kids too

Elvish · 24/11/2014 13:21

MIL is getting a canvas picture of the kids and a ceramic pan (which she requested!). For her birthday a few weeks ago I got her a handbag as she didn't have one to go with her navy shoes.

In the past I have got her hat/scarf and gloves sets, cashmere pashmina, more handbags...

clownumbrella · 24/11/2014 13:22

My MIL is impossible to buy for - has no hobbies, doesn't like reading, hates me anything where we might spend time together. I once got theatre tickets for a show in London. MIL and SIL were adamant that they "didn't want to come" (and I didn't really want to go by myself) - but then I found out later that they went without me!

I am very envious of those who have lovely MIL's. I think I'd like one of those for Christmas!

I'm going to buy her a M&S scarf with a gift receipt this year.

TheMoreItSnows · 24/11/2014 13:27

A buff - to keep her neck warm when walking the dog.......

lucysmam · 24/11/2014 13:31

She doesn't do handbags...or scarves (gave me a lovely one her sister gave her for her 50th that's never been worn). Also doesn't walk their dog, I do or my dp does if he's about.

Theatre tickets would make a lovely gift if I thought they'd be used but more than likely not.

Only place she goes is town for shopping on a Monday or here for a few hours on Saturday.

She really is lovely, just hard to buy for & not at all into material posessions.

Gin, Gin, Gin!

Can't you hear wot I said?

Grin
ELR · 24/11/2014 13:40

I've got mine a lovely umbrella from tkmaxx, some chocolates and some hand cream and a cd she asked for and a new shopping bag it's her birthday on 23rd so that's to split between them.

lucysmam · 24/11/2014 13:43

Grin magi she doesn't drink either apart from the odd glass of fizzy wine every now and again.

Gin may be a good idea for me though Wink

I am making up a Fortnum's hamper for MIL and her DH. MIL also doesn't do 'fancy' food, but she'll love stuff that says Fortnum's on it (bit of a snob like that, she is lovely though!), and I'm going to get things like tea, jams, chocs and biscuits, wrap each thing in tissue paper and tie with a ribbon, and bung it all in a Fortnum's canvas bag. Should be able to do it for around £50 all in.

ZingOfSeven · 24/11/2014 13:50

magi
Grin

but I thought you are drinking it all. what happened to you? \Shock/

I hate shopping - unless we are talking about quilting fabrics, sewing paraphernalia, baking stuff, beads and craft books for me!

basically DH is a like big kid with a credit card in a toy store and he really enjoy buying all the presents thank fuck. maybe he thinks he is Santa?Confused
Grin

I love wrapping gifts so it's all good.

not sure what MIL will get. previous presents involved gardening things, foot bath, huge bath towels she loves, cycling gear, dark chocolate.

ZingOfSeven · 24/11/2014 13:51

hi lucy !

how are you? I've been thinking of you coz I've just started drinking more water again! Smile

magimedi · 24/11/2014 15:45

Is this:

\Shock/

meant to be me imbibing gin with two straws? Grin

Xenadog · 24/11/2014 15:56

My MIL is getting a calendar with pics of our dd on It and a magazine subscription.

stealthsquiggle · 24/11/2014 15:59

My MIL is not officially my problem when it comes to presents, but she, with FIL and SIL inevitably become my problem nearer to Christmas as DH gets grumpier and grumpier with the impossibility of buying things for people who have no hobbies or interests. At all.

I think it might be yet another hamper this year..
