I'm hosting for the first time this year. (For 12 Shock)

Mil asked what the menu was and was shocked that I wasn't having mash potatoe or Yorkshire puddings.

And roast shallots.

I do love potato dauphinois but not sure if it would go with gravy - same with cauli cheese really.

Dunwhingin · 16/11/2014 18:47

We don't have mash or Yorkies..
We have bread sauce tho Grin

scousadelic · 16/11/2014 18:47

I can't understand either of those with Christmas dinner myself as it is just duplicating more bland carby stuff but everyone should make their own traditions. Think it is rather rude of MIL to say anything though

We have turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, pigs in blankets, gravy, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots and sprouts. Sometimes vary it a bit but that is the basics

Kundry · 16/11/2014 18:48

So you are doing carrot and swede mash + roast potatoes + dauphinoise +numerous other veg and your MIL complained you aren't doing mahed potatoes ?????

I don't like your MIL. She's rude.

EveDallasRetd · 16/11/2014 18:48

We are having:

Pork and crackling, Apple sauce (Me, DH, Dad)
Turkey Crown, cranberry sauce (DD, Mum)
Pigs in blankets
Roast pots
Honey roast parsnips
Carrot and swede mash
Carrots
Green beans
Broccoli
Sprouts with bacon bits

Puddings:
xmas pud, lethal brandy butter and brandy sauce/cream (me and dad)
Baileys cake (mum)
Cheats ice-cream bomb thing (DD)

Boxing Day will be bubble and squeak (I'll add some frozen mash) with Gammon in Coke.

RiverTam · 16/11/2014 18:50

Yorkshires go with beef.
mash goes with sausages.

that is all.

Velvetbee · 16/11/2014 18:56

We're having curry, def doing it 'wrong' and don't care. Considering doing yorkshires with it now though!

nothruroad · 16/11/2014 18:56

Be careful - this could end up like that scene in Friends where Monica does Thanksgiving dinner for the first time and has to make six different sorts of peas.

alpacasosoft · 16/11/2014 18:56

Mashed potato - always served with either Turkey or chicken ,gravy, cranberry and bread sauce.

Roasties served with pork or beef and yorkies .

JeanneDeMontbaston · 16/11/2014 18:57

Agree, cold roasties are the best.

But - burning question - does anyone else find cold turkey tastes horrible when it's been in the fridge? I am fine with the taste when it's just cooled and you cut a slice after the washing and before putting it in the fridge. But I find after that it has a really odd taste.

Is this just me?

And is there anything I can do about it?

SoonToBeSix · 16/11/2014 18:58

I would be disappointed at no mash or yorkshiremen.

Mehitabel6 · 16/11/2014 19:03

Yorkshire puddings do not go with Christmas Dinner-unless you are having beef. Smile, nod, ignore and do it your way.

pissedglitter · 16/11/2014 19:03

We have 2 meats (not decided yet) NOT TURKEY
Mash
Roasties
Yorkies
Sprouts (yuk)
Carrots
Turnip
Gravy
More veg but not decided what

No, no, no to Yorkshire puddings.
They go with beef.

Christmas dinner is:

Turkey
Chipolatas
Bacon rolls
stuffing
potato (can be mash or roast or both)
veg - should include sprouts, add peas / carrots / green beans as preferred)
red cabbage (cooked - not pickled!)
bread sauce
cranberry sauce
gravy.

Most importantly: whatever you choose to serve and are able to cope with in the oven, not what your MIL decrees!

Mehitabel6 · 16/11/2014 19:08

The best thing about hosting is that you get to do it the way that you want!

FurryDogMother · 16/11/2014 19:12

Mash is for Boxing Day, with cold turkey, ham, pickled walnuts and salad. Christmas dinner is:

Roast beast (turkey, goose or duck)
Stuffing
Brussels Sprouts
Carrots
Petits pois
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Lashings of gravy
Broccoli and cauliflower are optional, but one type of spud is enough.

PizzaPasta · 16/11/2014 19:12

I see what you are saying about the Dauphinoise and cauliflower cheese not going with the gravy, but (I should have said before) I'm having a few veggies round who don't eat meat alternatives or gravy so it's mainly for them. I also forgot the honey roast parsnips!!!

OP posts:
Lindy2 · 16/11/2014 19:14

We have about 10 things which don't include mash or Yorkshire puddings. If we had those too how would it actually fit on the plates! Plus mash when there are roast potatoes is simply odd. (IMO! )

JeanneDeMontbaston · 16/11/2014 19:17

I would be disappointed at no mash or yorkshiremen.

soon, if part of your Christmas tradition is to lay on Yorkshiremen, can I come to yours, and can I specify a nice fellow of about 30-40, please?!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/11/2014 19:17

Oh, didn't see the dauphinoise, that is very wrong to me. As is anything with cheese in it, I can't abide cauliflower cheese with a roast, but it's delicious as a meal in itself.

ArchangelGallic · 16/11/2014 19:24

Jeanne, why do you wash your turkey??
VERY confused.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 16/11/2014 19:29

Pizza I don't get the Yorkshire pudding love either. I don't like them.

Actually it's really interesting to see what everyone is having. We never have swede but going to do it this year.

Kundry · 16/11/2014 19:40

Can I also ask what the turkey washing is prays it is a typo

MehsMum · 16/11/2014 19:43

I love yorkshires but have never had them for Christmas dinner anywhere, ever - not with DM, or my godmother, or PILs, or here. They're not for Christmas - unless you were doing roast rib of beef, which would be Different.

If I were the OP's MIL, I'd just be grateful that someone else was taking all responsibility.
