Just looking for inspiration really! Ours loves anything with an engine so we'll be adding to his train track and getting various cars. Also planning to get ikea kitchen between him and dd (1).

TBH I tend to avoid character stuff by default now. As you say, it's expensive, and quite often poorer quality (not talking about the umizoomi thing there as I've not seen it, just mean generally).

Last year DH and I decided no character toys (except one set of top trumps), I really thought DCs would notice but they didn't.

fuzzpig · 26/10/2014 07:45

(Sorry that wasn't helpful Blush)

TiredNow · 26/10/2014 08:46

I know, Umizoomi is extortionate, its cheaper to buy it from American TowaRDs and get it shipped

TiredNow · 26/10/2014 08:46

Yes we've resisted a lot of character stuff up until now, except playing cards or stationery, but we've given in this year as he's so into Octonauts. I think the Playmobil and Lego is much better quality and has more longevity, but it's balancing that with the 'it's what I wanted and I got it!' factor.

MrsAmaretto · 26/10/2014 08:51

My son will be 4.5 and wants

  • transformer
  • another switch & go dino
  • buckaroo game
  • his own chocolate orange that nobody can share :)

He's also going to get from Santa a toy boat that he'll love.

He's getting a hot wheels track from his sister, lego city & an annual from parents.

He loves playing with his octanauts, Spider-Man, batman, Spinosauraus switch & go, duplo & the one transformer he owns!

Spookgremlin · 26/10/2014 08:57

Sorry for hijack, but those whose 3-4 year olds are into Batman and Spider-Man, are there tv cartoon versions they watch that are ok for that age or do you just buy them the toys and they get into them that way?

Just I see a lot of kids with the stuff but obviously the films are a little old for them yet, but think ds is getting to where he'd enjoy a bit some superheroes.

Spookgremlin · 26/10/2014 08:57

Enjoy a bit some superheroes?! Meant to be enjoy getting into superheroes.

Me talk pretty one day.

fuzzpig · 26/10/2014 09:05

Agreed spooky, re finding the balance!

fuzzpig · 26/10/2014 09:13

Also I'm sure I've read on here that of all character toys, Octonauts stuff is actually pretty good quality :)

Mine is turning4 next month and is getting a proper little BMX for his birthday. I have no idea yet about Christmas!

clara85 · 26/10/2014 09:22

Spook - good quesion , my ds1 is 4 next month and loves spiderman & batman but has never seen it or anything ! Its just from other kids at nursery so ive got a few figures but he hasnt seen any film or cartoon for them :)

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 26/10/2014 09:36

spook gremlin my dds (5 and 2) love the Lego marvel episode on netflix also batman is in the Lego movie. and I think they just like the characters particularly dd2!!

theres also cartoons, we haven't watched them but have friends with boys who do. and theres a Scooby doo meets batman film which im thinking of getting dd 2

I agree with other posters most character toys are rubbish. but busy books are brilliant - its a book with figures and a playmat normally around £5 they do loads of different ones my dd's spend ages playing with them!

FourthMary · 26/10/2014 10:20

My ds watches dvds of old batman cartoons, from 60's and 70's, they are more age appropriate. There are some on YouTube too.

Spookgremlin · 26/10/2014 16:31

Yes fuzzpig, I've heard that, hoping it doesn't fall apart every five minutes anyway, my ds doesn't take it too well. I think it will get a lot of play and it will give me a break from being Captain Barnacles Grin

Thanks for superhero info, we did have a chat about Spider-Man the other day so might pick him up a figure for his stocking as if he doesn't have enough already

Will look up the old cartoons too fourthmary (Is your name from Bunty?)

Looked up Iggy Peck Architect too andharry, that looks great, think ds would love so have ordered, thanks Grin. My ds is a little young for the tap art but that looked good too so have noted it for another time.

And thanks howaboutthisone for the thread though it is cleaning me out!

Howaboutthisone · 26/10/2014 19:18

Grin Spookgremlin!

I'm loving these ideas. To be honest I think that DS alternates between thinking he's a car, a plane and a train! I want to indulge the obsession a bit! But... He was always with adults before starting school and I was thinking that some dr/nurse set, kitchen, market, figures sets might help bring him along a bit socially. But like someone mentioned upthread- I don't want Christmas morning to be a time when I'm convincing him that things are fun, it needs to be a 'wow look what I got. I'm so lucky. Can we play with it right now?' time really!

6yo DS has:
Imaginext Ocean boat (currently £25 on Amazon reduced from £40!)
Battleship playset from Argos (nephew got this last year, both boys loved it)
Lego car transporter
Lego annual

Car colouring book
Couple of books

Stocking:
Chocolate coins
Couple of toy cars

For any learning enthusiasts I'd highly recommend Usbourne See Inside books. They're educational flap books, we have a load of them and they've all been a big hit.
