Help - I have no decorations, no tree, need to buy it all

First year living in my own home away from horrible toxic mother. Need to make Christmas a good one!

I need to buy the lot, but don't know where to start!! I need a tree, don't mind spending a little bit to get a really good one but don't have mountains of cash lying around. Any recommendations of trees that look big and nice and full?

Also decorations - any bargainicious sites that sell lots of lovely decs that I don't know about?

Really ready to get excited about Christmas this year.

I've got nothing either (split from exH in January, daughter lives with her dad).

I live near a QD and honestly, their xmas stuff is gorgeous! I'm picking up a few bits at a time and my god, the prices are so LOW!

Dotcom gift shop has a sale on decorations at the moment.

So many lovely suggestions guys, thank you so much! I had forgotten about Wilkos, I do love their Christmas bits so will definitely go there. Money is tight so will have a look on free cycle and see. My mum always dominated the festive season so time to make it my own.

If money is tight then go with home made decorations, home made bows and bunting made from remnants or charity shop buys, cookies iced or wrapped in bright paper, pine cones you've collected with added glitter perhaps, ivy and holly in a vase, also use your Christmas fruit as a decoration, a pretty plate of oranges apples nuts lemons and a few foil chocolates as a table centrepiece doesn't cost anything extra.

I posted this on another fred, but when it comes to advent calenders, you can't beat this Grin except I'd have it in white.

I forgot to mention, but there were a couple of years I had to "bulk up" a tree's baubles and one year (first tree in a houseshare in Uni) I used red and green toothbrushes, and another year (first year after a major housemove), I bought a couple of packs of plastic whistles and party blowers and used them. They were really colourful and I still have them. They're part of my collection history. Blush

DS is learning all about these ornaments, when I bought them, why, what they mean to me. Blush Blush

I LOVE the advent calendar!!

Catmint · 05/10/2014 08:17

I meant to say, over years, I am building up a collection of plain glass ornaments for my tree. Last year I bought some odds and ends of chandelier drops off eBay. They look very pretty on the tree.

Allalonenow · 05/10/2014 09:05

Grin at the advent calendar, don't think you would get much Christmas prep actually done though!

chanie44 · 05/10/2014 09:07

Get your decorations early as many shops sell out before Xmas.

Out first Xmas, we bought cheapo decorations and 1-2 nice ones. The next year, we got a few more nice ones and are building it up.

How about getting your children to help make some decorations Eg paper chains. There are lots of ideas on the Net and it will keep them busy!!

elQuintoConyo · 05/10/2014 09:16

That's hands down the best advent calendar I have ever seen!

For our first Christmas together, DH and I could barely rub together the €12 for the cheapest tree we could find! I made felt decorations including pink martini glasses with olives Blush Grin Since then (2007) I have carried on making them but with more taste! I have also got on the tree some chandelier crystals (sold cheaply in boxes in flea markets). They also look nice hanging near a window to catch the light.

Decorations-wise I also have a wreath for the front door (we have a glass porch then another front door with a knocker, wreath won't get rained on, it makes me smile when I come home), mistletoe above the kitchen door, a knitivity (knitted nativity - we aren't religious but it is a wonderful thing to look at and full of character!), a 1ft snowman by the front door who holds a sign saying welcome - muted beigey colours but very cute, it was a gift. Also various hanging bits that I put on kitchen cabinet door handle, a Santa's washing line across the bookcase, various bits lit up with LED tealights.

Oh, and I make my fridge look like a snowman!

I have rather a large collection of little decorative stockings, I'd be more than willing to post you one Smile but appreciate if you want to do it all yourself.

What I would recommend is getting yourself the nicest stocking you can afford, buy yourself little treats over the next few weeks and wrap them immediately (nail varnish, FC hankies, bath stuff, corkscrew, £10 note... etc), by the time Xmas day comes round and you unwrap your stocking-to-yourself, you may have forgotten what you bought! Surprise! Plus a tenner!

Biscuits and ribbon is an excellent way to decorate a tree, your biggest outlay being tree and lights. Then splash out in the sales.

Thanks

Hell, make your own stockings! Remnant fabrics are cheap and even novice seam-persons can turn out something nice. I used http://www.pagesandprint.com/mccalls-m5549-christmas-stockings/ McCalls pattern M5549 (if that link doesnt work, do a Google Images search for it) with some gorgeous opulent fabric and trim.

PedantMarina · 05/10/2014 19:24

At everybody who liked the advent calendar: you're my new best friends!

Purpleflamingos · 05/10/2014 19:31

If you walk anywhere and see pine cones collect them. You can either buy cheap glitter paint or white acrylic paint to decorate the edges. Use brown string to tie onto a tree.

BetweenTwoLungs · 05/10/2014 20:09

Pine cones - brilliant. I walk our two dogs every day and I'm sure I'll be able to collect some.

Wilkos is definitely on the list.

Also love the idea of getting a naice dec each year and adding to the collection.

My local garden centre stocks beautiful tree ornaments so worth checking your local one. It's worth buying a colour/themed pack from a high st store & then personalising it with individual pieces.

Craft stalls & museum shops are a good source of individual decorations.
