Christmassy glittery jam??

WellTidy · 24/09/2014 11:17

I am planning to make jam for the first time this weekend. I have been told that this recipe is foolproof (whihc it will have to be as I am no cook!) and I was wondering if I could make it more exciting for the DC by adding edible glitter.

Any thoughts on whether this would work in jam please(and if so, how much should I add, and does anyone have any recommendations on which one to get and from where), or am I mad?!

This sounds very exciting! No advice but watching.

JeanetteDanielsBenziger · 24/09/2014 11:23

Not a clue love, but watching for answers as I've just decided that glittery jam on a Christmas tree shaped crumpet will be a fan Christmas day breakfast :-)

PetulaGordino · 24/09/2014 11:23

looking at this recipe maybe 2 tsp edible glitter for a single batch of the recipe you linked to?

PetulaGordino · 24/09/2014 11:24

or just add it by the tsp until it's glittery enough!

WellTidy · 24/09/2014 11:24

hotsauce this is what I was thinking of adding to the jam. I have no idea what's come over me, I am no cook!

Thanks Petula for the link as it woudl never have occurerd to me not to add the glitter until the jam is actually cooked Smile

Lustre dust (what you linked to) is a very fine powder so I'm not sure it would make your jam glittery, maybe a bit shimmery? Actual edible glitter that is sparkly is almost impossible to find - the very sparkly stuff is non-toxic rather than edible. (I'd still probably use it though). Edible 'glitter' tends to look more like vaguely sparkly flakes.

WellTidy · 24/09/2014 11:36

Lizzie thanks very much for your insight as I am new to the world of glitter and lustre! Would you not bother, honestly?

The other gold glitters I've seen are this one and these stars

Oooh no, I think it's a brilliant idea! I've got some of those gold stars actually, they might work really well. I'll have to try it out. I got them from tk maxx I think.

Umlauf · 24/09/2014 11:43

I was planning the same but also having the glitter issue! I have seen gold sugar which is bigger but wouldn't it dissolve?? Do the gold stars dissolve? lizziemint could you test one in water and report back?!?!

LizzieMint · 24/09/2014 11:46

I'll test, but am pretty sure they will...

fairnotfair · 24/09/2014 11:48

I think Fortnums use gold leaf in their special jam?

penguinsaresmall · 24/09/2014 11:48

OP why don't you just sprinkle the stars/glitter over the jam once you've spread it on whatever you spread it on?

PetulaGordino · 24/09/2014 11:51

hmm yes

the water-soluble nature is probably the rate-limiting step here

the non-toxic one will give you christmassy glittery poo too!

LizzieMint · 24/09/2014 11:53

They do dissolve - but look how pretty they are at first!

I'm going to sprinkle some into a jar of already-made jam and see how they fare.

WellTidy · 24/09/2014 12:01

Thanks Lizzie. I am very grateful.

penguins I am admiring your common sense Smile

Ah thanks Well but actually I'm just lazy Smile

MrsCosmopilite · 24/09/2014 12:11

I'd go with the non-toxic glitter that you sprinkle onto sugarpaste stuff - but would add it to the cooked jam. Maybe just a little on the top surface once it's bottled? That way, if someone didn't like sparkly jam heaven forbid they could just scrape it off. If they did (and this is far more likely) then they could just mix it in.

FWIW I've spotted edible gold leaf in Waitrose - it's about £5 per pack.

LizzieMint · 24/09/2014 12:11

Well they're not dissolving in the jam yet....

LizzieMint · 24/09/2014 12:52

It works in the jam! The water content is obviously low enough not to dissolve the stars, stirring through at the end is the way to go I think.

PetulaGordino · 24/09/2014 12:54

good work, lizzie

would it need to be cool do you think?

Umlauf · 24/09/2014 13:20

Thanks lizzie ! THey look so pretty. It will cost me a fortune to get some as I live abroad but might go ahead with it now!

WellTidy · 24/09/2014 13:33

Brilliant, thanks Lizzie. I've added them to my amazon basket, and hope to make the jam this weekend or next. Do you think they could be added to the jam whilst it is still hot, or should I wait for it to cool down (completely?) do you think?

I made raspberry and champagne glitter jam last year. I used a couple of these tubes of gold glitter and it worked amazingly well. You can't really tell in the photos but in real life they were really sparkly and gorgeous.
