We bought a wreath for the front door from a florist 4 years ago. I had dropped DH off to the aircoach, and DD and I popped into the florist at the stop to buy, expecting to pay €25-30. It was €65! I gulped. But I was sad, I had the money, and I didn't have time to make one myself. I didn't admit to DH how much it had cost until he was home safe (it was the "year of the big snow" and he had to travel from London via ferry in Holyhead instead of flying).
I had intended taking it apart and saving it safely in bits. But it was too much faff to do that right after Christmas, so just put it into the attic space as it was, to dismantle next December and rebuild fresh. But it was still quite green and live looking then - so I hung it straight back up! Put it away safe again, and it came out looking dried, yes, but still vibrant enough 2 years ago and again last year. I may eventually have to dismantle it this or next year, and remake with fresh holly - but as it had been made with holly, dried cones, cinnamon sticks, fake apples, and a lovely green edged red ribbon - it still works very well! I never though that €65 would be so worth it! Most of the wreaths sold locally are full of fresh pine and ivy, so they can't be kept that way.
A pre-lit on though, might be worth considering when this one is no longer usable.
I've been looking at my spreadsheet and starting to twitch. The sales are starting here too. And the National Concert Hall has tickets on sale for the live "Snowman" (they show the film with a love narrator and live orchestra) or "Carols by Candlelight" concerts - I am going to buy those today too.
I haven't yet addressed the question of where we will be this year - but as we travelled last year, I want to stay put this year. And I think DH will accept what I tell him as we all need that quiet time this year.
