Have friends (who normally live overseas) coming for dinner on boxing day, with their two kids. Stuck as to what to serve. We are having goose on Christmas Day and I doubt there will be leftovers. I have a leg of lamb in the freezer but what that be too heavy after Christmas Day? I guess I could do it moroccan style or something rather than a roast dinner as such. Or do you think a cold meats/salad type offering would be better? Any ideas welcome!

Given the weather I'd appreciate something hot. Moroccan lamb sounds lush. If you go with cold cuts bung a tray of pigs in blankets in the oven.

DrinkFromSantasFountain · 20/12/2013 07:55

We always have gammon, turkey chips peas and various pickles on Boxing Day, it's tradition we also get crackers again.
The Moroccan thing sounds nice though try that.

SanityClause · 20/12/2013 08:02

The cold meat and salad thing works well, because people are stuffed full of Christmas dinner from the day before, so it's a nice change. Also, people can serve themselves as much or as little as they want. But if you won't have any leftovers, then just something else quite light. Will you have ham? And you could have a pie or quiche and a few types of salad like a bean salad and coleslaw.

I'd be happy (and expect) to help use up leftovers, but as you don't expect to have any, any warm meal but not too heavy. So, although perfectly nice, I probably wouldn't expect a cold meats salad at this time of year (but I wouldn't complain iyswim). Morrocan sounds lovely, or a curry or stir fry or warm buffet. We go to MIL and she traditionally serves Gammon joint with chips and chipolata sausages for Boxing Day, knowing that we've had a big roastie the day previous.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2013 08:04

Anything I hadn't had to cook myself would be lovely! Grin

Probably not a roast dinner - something lighter. soup and salad would be fine. But so would the Moroccan lamb, maybe with a fruity dessert rather than anything too creamy/chocolatey.

Snog · 20/12/2013 08:06

MIL does a whole poached salmon which is fab

gamerchick · 20/12/2013 08:07

Curry

PaschasDanglyReindeerBaubles · 20/12/2013 08:08

What will they have had on christmas day? A full on feast as well, or travelling so not much? If they've had all the trimmings then cold cuts and warm sides might work, if they haven't had so much the moroccan lamb sounds very nice.

Actually, I would like the moroccan lamb regardless. Just do that.

girlywhirly · 20/12/2013 08:27

I like the sound of moroccan roast lamb too. Are the visiting DC likely to enjoy that or will you have to do something else as well for them?

If you do cold meats you could always bake some jacket potatoes to have with them.

gruffalosmile · 20/12/2013 08:42

Okay thanks all so moroccan style roast lamb it is then! I can do some chicken kebabs or similar for the children, maybe with some couscous and a big salad. Prob a pavlova or something for after. Thanks all - the power of mumsnet strikes again.

raisah · 20/12/2013 12:30

I have got my cousin coming on Boxind day & am cooking:
Chicken biryaani
lightly spiced veg curry
dhaal
salad
lemon cheese cake

HyvaPaiva · 20/12/2013 12:32

Before reading your OP and just going by the title, I came on to write 'Moroccan, preferably lamb'. So yes to Moroccan lamb!

Haribotangfastic · 20/12/2013 12:38

I would like a buffet Grin nice ham, cheeses, pâté, dips and some nice bread

MadameDefarge · 20/12/2013 12:40

I think I would like a really really lush shepherds pie with peas and carrots. And trifle.

SantaStuffedMyStocking · 20/12/2013 14:39

were In Scotland and everyone we know has steak pie with all the trimmings on boxing day along with a nice glass of champs.

CalamitouslyWrong · 20/12/2013 16:26

Surely you have steak pie on New Year's Day. Do you have it on both?

princesscupcakemummyb · 20/12/2013 16:57

well for us we serve gamon pigs in blankets and buffet things or a curry home made

KatieScarlett2833 · 20/12/2013 17:00

Steak pie on both here. TBH we don't really need an excuse to eat that, it's a once a week staple.

SantaStuffedMyStocking · 20/12/2013 17:53

yes, boxing day and new years day here too!

MARGUERITE18 · 20/12/2013 18:20

last year lamb and spinach curry and lentil coconut Dahl and rice
this year rissoto and cheese bread

buffet dinner

GeoffLeopard · 20/12/2013 18:47

Cold meats, salad but the must have thing is cheesy mashed potato with coleslaw. Last year I did it with normal and sweet potatoes. Not boxing day without it.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 20/12/2013 19:16

I did a massive gammon with either fried eggs and chips or rice and pineapple depending on what my guests preferred and it was a big success.

MadameDefarge · 20/12/2013 19:52

ooh gammon egg and chips.....

Creamycoolerwithcream · 20/12/2013 19:55

It was good, there were a few children so it worked so well for them too.
