If you have Christmas lunch, what do you have for supper?

My first time hosting Christmas (and it's the ILs visiting us).

In my family (ie when DM is hosting) we just eat crisps and M&S nibbles, prawns and yummy things, dips etc in front of the TV (we do have a proper lunch!). I think this is perfect but MIL is a snob and I can't afford lots of M&S nibbles (and can't be bothered to make them).

I was thinking some sort of quiche / salad would be nice - any ideas? Magazines etc seem to neglect this area of Christmas catering! I may have some left over ham from Christmas eve. Don't want to eat lunch leftovers as that is a meal for the next day!

We just put some stuff out on the table, crackers, cheese, leftover turkey, grapes etc and people go up and help themselves as they become empty enough to eat more food throughout the evening.

I'd put the ham out and some unsliced bread on a board, then your MiL can cut it herself.

It depends on what time we had dinner and how full everyone is but usually either cheese and biscuits, maybe a bit of salad, fruit and mince pies/Christmas cake. Or turkey sandwiches, salad, nibbles, crisps, pickles etc, fruit, mince pies and Christmas cake.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 19/12/2013 17:23

Cheese and biscuits, turkey sandwiches, mince pies with cream, half a bottle of Baileys normally does the trick.

overmydeadbody · 19/12/2013 17:23

Cheeses, salads, grapes, crackers, nice bread, maybe some crisps.

GeordieCherry · 19/12/2013 17:23

Could you do a Scandinavian style fish platter & bread & salad?

Or like a posh ploughman's?

Butterytoast · 19/12/2013 17:25

Do what you want to do and if mil doesn't like it she can host next year Grin

Creamycoolerwithcream · 19/12/2013 17:25

Posh ploughmans, may have to copy that idea for one of the in-between days.

wordfactory · 19/12/2013 17:27

Cold turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets. Good cheese. Good bread. Ripe tomatoes. Pickles and chutneys. Job done!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 19/12/2013 17:40

We always have a cheese board. Lots of nice different cheeses with chutney and pickles. I get those ready to bake baguettes and some posh crackers like Fudges ones to go with it. All washed down with a glass or three of port. Lovely.

RubyLovesShopping · 19/12/2013 17:43

Cheeseboard and several chutneys, nice crackers and oatcakes and crisps. Then grapes mince pies and Xmas cake.

Fantail · 19/12/2013 17:43

How about some soup, with some nice bread, followed by a cheese board, fruit and then chocolates if anyone wants them.

Worriedthistimearound · 19/12/2013 17:46

We have massive rounds of toast all cut into small triangles piled high. We normally have 2 or 3 different pates and pickles and salad out so people take a handful of toast and a big dollop of pate.

We also have cheese and biscuits. Usually cheddar, Stilton and Brie. We then have mince pies and cream out. On quite a few occasions we have the Christmas pudding then as everyone has been too stuffed to eat it after lunch.

Worriedthistimearound · 19/12/2013 17:48

Yes, those part baked baguettes are simple and you can buy them now and freeze them as they can be baked from frozen. They are lovely with pate and pickles too!

IsleOfRight · 19/12/2013 17:48

We have a Jewish supper to make up for the Christian lunch (mixed faith family). So smoked salmon, bagels, viennas (beef sausages)

Bonkerz · 19/12/2013 17:57

Big all the trimmings lunch at 12 then pre baked rolls, pickles and fresh slow cooked ham/cheese etc for tea! It just goes on side and we help ourselves!!

piratecat · 19/12/2013 18:03

I buy rolls too, have the meat/cheese, also pickled onions, beetroot.

A big quiche is a great idea, warmed through with the above.

We always have xmas pudding in the evening, we are always too stuffed at lunchtime.

BellaVita · 19/12/2013 18:03

Pork pie, ham, pickles, cheese board.

Catzenobia · 19/12/2013 23:19

Bread, pate, cheese, chestnuts, satsumas, dates, pomegranates, mince pies and Christmas cake.

IsleOfRight · 19/12/2013 23:24

I've been thinking about this. I would do a big pot of soup - leek and potato perhaps - that you could have with crusty bread and cheese.

girlywhirly · 20/12/2013 07:45

Cheese and biscuits, trifle, picky things like dates, nuts, chocolates.

ReastieYuleANBU · 20/12/2013 07:49

I love the posh ploughmans idea.

I'd say soup would be a good one, something not too heavy and nice and healthy. It might be more straight forward to do than faffing about with lots of little things to get out as you can make it in advance and just heat up and big pan of it for everyone and have some nice rolls. Butternut squash and thyme or butternut squash and sweet potato with parsley are really really easy to do and quite wintery/different to the veg you will have had at lunch.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2013 07:52

DIY cheese and crackers, sometimes ham, bread, salad etc. I think the mags are right to neglect this area of Christmas catering because frankly everyone should Grin. We don't need more pressure and work!

The OP's original thought of quiche and salads would be fine too, if she feels her MIL would rate that better.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/12/2013 11:09

Chocolate.

Artandco · 20/12/2013 11:40

Cheese and crackers. Add some pâté/ chutneys/ grapes

Artandco · 20/12/2013 11:41

Oh and the best way is to offer lots of mulled wine through the afternoon so by evening mil is too tipsy to care!
