How much do you spend on the meat part of your Xmas meal?

After spending £12 on a free range chicken that will feed this family of 5 for 2-3 meals, I started looking at catalogues of Xmas roasts.

Shock

Blimey!

What sort of thing do you get, from where, and how much do you spend?

Got beef yesterday and it was half price for a large joint at £11, The lamb we entend to eat on Christmas day itself will be around £23/25

BobCrotchstitch · 07/12/2013 09:53

It depends what we have and how many we are feeding.
This year we have a haunch of local venison which is free as DH has done some gas work for a friend who fortunately owns the game merchants Xmas Grin
Piece of lamb is about £15 from Waitrose I think and DS has requested turkey so a small crown/ breast to add on. I am also going to cook a ham but have no idea how much that might cost as I have never bought one. Personally we spend a lot of money on meat as we prefer good quality, high welfare meat so our spending is not a good benchmark.

lucysmam · 07/12/2013 09:56

Usually a large chicken for a tenner or so & plenty of leftovers to save on cooking.

This year....I have no idea....my dad is buying us a turkey but no idea where from or how much Xmas Confused (it was going to be an m&s turkey crown....now I don't know what he's doing until he pops round later today!)

DoingItForMyself · 07/12/2013 10:00

DP spent £25 on gammon and will probably spend another £30-40 on beef to feed 6 adults and 9 kids. I'm sure there will be some leftovers for about half an hour until we demolish them too

Happiestinwellybobs · 07/12/2013 10:03

Previous years we have had a goose/turkey from the local butcher, although one year DH bought one of each - it was £90 Shock although each bird would have fed the 5000.

This year? Aldi's four bird roast for £9.99.

Shinyshoes1 · 07/12/2013 10:05

I spend around £40. For a free ranged Norfolk bronze

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 07/12/2013 10:07

Around £80-£100 for either a big rib of beef or a goose and a ham.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 07/12/2013 10:09

Oh, and the goose and ham come from the farmers market and if we get beef we order it from a farm in Wales.

insanityscatching · 07/12/2013 10:11

Just ordered a turkey butterfly from our local butcher, that will be £30 and a piece of ham £20. Will buy sausagemeat, pigs in blankets from Sainsburys as I don't like their sausages. Expect to pay fishmonger £30 when he delivers just before Christmas too.
Will feed all our family, guests and drop ins and plenty of leftovers.

DameDeepRedBetty · 07/12/2013 10:14

We've done rib of beef for years, but have decided to go for topside this year - should be about £30 instead of £70. Also I've finally found a way of cooking it that keeps it really moist inside.

craftynclothy · 07/12/2013 10:15

£15 on a frozen turkey from Aldi. Then we usually have a bit of ham in the freezer that I cook to have cold on Boxing Day (so probably around £5). I bought it early this year to save my Mum (on a state pension) buying for us but she still insisted and sent £20.

notso · 07/12/2013 10:20

16 for Christmas Eve and 6 for Christmas Day
Free Range Turkey from the Butchers £50
Sausages £5 for 24
Bacon £3ish
Free Range Pork mince for stuffing £4
Ham for Christmas Eve £30
It will do the two big dinners and feed the 6 of us until 2014 plus, stock, soup and probably curry in the Freezer.

QueenofallIsee · 07/12/2013 12:56

Kelly bronze free range turkey to feed 16 people.. £70.
beef joint..25
xmas ham for party...35

SoonToBeSix · 07/12/2013 13:04

£20

Theimpossiblegirl · 07/12/2013 14:24

Tesco do a finest Wiltshire ham for £10 at the moment. The date is long enough to last til Christmas.

Alwayscheerful · 07/12/2013 17:23

We usually spend £45 on a rib of beef but this year our guests expect turkey. We have 8 adults to feed, I am thinking about a stuffed crown.

ShoeWhore · 07/12/2013 17:27

I'm not cooking this year so £0 Smile

Last couple of times I cooked I did turkey one year and goose another - they cost £50 and £60 respectively.

The year we were very skint there were only a few of us for Christmas dinner so I did a big organic chicken, that was about a tenner and very nice it was too.

Thingymajigs · 07/12/2013 18:14

I can't believe how expensive Christmas food can be. I hosted last year for the first time and just bought gammon joint for 7 people for £13. I don't think I spent more than £30 on everything.
I gave my mum my £35 Tesco vouchers to put towards our meal this year as she's broke and hosting. She thanked me and said that would go towards one of the meat joints. One?! I obviously didn't get the memo and am now self conscious about my effort last year.

KungFuBustle · 07/12/2013 19:17

I do the aldi four bird roast for £10.
Had it last year, did 3 of us with leftovers and was enjoyed.

Katieweasel · 07/12/2013 19:24

Another Aldi lover here. Frozen Turkey crown for a tenner. Delicious so why spend more!

KungFuBustle · 07/12/2013 19:27

Ooh never tried the crown Katie. May consider for this year. Do you get much on it? We for a main meal plus a day of sandwiches and picking out of the 4 bird.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 07/12/2013 19:31

Just spent 100€ on a turkey, gammon joint! sausages and bacon. Had to pay more for a UK cut.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 07/12/2013 19:31

Don't know where the erroneous exclamation mark came from - feckin iPad.

Pinupgirl · 07/12/2013 19:35

Dh likes to use an award winning butchers. It is lovely but very expensive-we are having a goose this year and they start at £70! I would be happy with a large chicken tbh and after this we will need to start tightening our belts as has been a horrible month money wise.

purpleloosestrife · 07/12/2013 19:41

erm I spend about £150 for christmas and boxing day -looking to provide 40+ meals/portions in that time, so don't think it's too bad. Plus I only ever eat ethically reared, organic meat - which is very expensive :(
