Just wondering how many presents your children have to open in total (from you/Santa)

Last year santa gift cost only 15£ this year it will cost more like £80 or so.

blackandwhiteandredallover · 28/11/2013 22:51

Well a bit of everything I guess- I don't want them to grow up expecting a huge pile. And this year they each asked for 2 fairly expensive things as their main presents, in other years they have had more presents, but smaller. We've probably spent about £150 each on them in total, including stocking fillers.

Luggage16 · 28/11/2013 22:53

the year we did 4ish presents each for them was based on the idea of them not wanting to associate xmas with gifts - but actually I now think that its counterproductive. I think kids see people giving and that can only be a good thing, unless you take it to major extremes (im thinking about a family i know who spend thousands and put little thought into the gifts). Now I am going to buy what they will like and spend what we have but make sure we dont overwhelm the children. I want them to see gift giving as a good thing and not associate nice gifts with moaning parents complaining about it being unappreciated. I enjoy giving gifts and they like new things so its win win really :D

3yo DS doesn't get anything from anyone else, so it's just down to Santa and us.
Santa brings four gifts (want, need, wear, read).
We have got him about five things, though one of those 'one' things is a bunch of dinosaurs so depends if you count them individually. I am certainly not wrapping them individually! Considering a couple of extra gifts, but really I think he has enough.
He also has a stocking mostly full of nonsense (wriggly snake, bouncy ball, bubbles, socks, Hot Wheels car) and stuff like chocolate coins and a satsuma, but a couple of good things too, like a really nice book, and a new teddy or action figure.

So, currently nine substantial gifts, and a bunch of stocking fillers. Probably about 20 things in the stocking, but that includes pants and socks and chocolatey stuff.

We also do the Xmas Eve box - new PJs and a book.

lilyaldrin · 28/11/2013 22:57

1 present from us, 1 present from Father Christmas, and a stocking with chocolate, socks, satsuma and maybe 5 little presents.

birdybear - I don't know where we'd put 20 or 30 new presents! I'd rather DS got a couple of nice presents from us that he really wants, plus a few little stocking fillers. Once he's had presents from grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles he has more than enough.

ZombieMonkeyButler · 28/11/2013 23:00

Why count presents? DD will have about 15 - total cost £150. DS2 will have 6 - 4 Xbox games, a pair of Beats & a laptop!

DS1 will have the same value of gifts as DS2, but probably more parcels as has asked for cheaper things.

The thought of people affording 30 gifts per child just depresses me Sad.

nancy75 · 28/11/2013 23:02

Why does it depress you zombie?

Luggage16 · 28/11/2013 23:02

lilyaldrin that def makes a difference too doesnt it! Mine dont get a lot elsewhere so we get them a little more. This year I sold a lot of their outgrown toys so we have room for new ones too which is why they have a little more than usual.

lilyaldrin · 28/11/2013 23:05

Those buying 30 presents, how much is each gift worth/what kind of thing is it?

DS's two main presents probably cost about £25 each (he is only 3 though, I know they get more expensive!) and maybe another £20 on stocking fillers. This seems like quite a lot to me.

I probably spent about the same amount on DP actually, but as his gifts are all books/CDs/DVDs he will have about 10-15 things to open.

nancy75 · 28/11/2013 23:11

Lilyaldrin - dd's big present is a dressing table about £90, then there is lego, some barbie type dolls, books, audio books, puzzles & a couple of board games. I don't buy stocking filler type toys, I am always surprised that people will buy 10 £1.50 junk type toys instead of 2 books or a board game. Dd has chocolate in her stocking. I don't know how much i have spent this year, i buy things as i go along and put them away. We do only have 1 child to buy for

stretchyandbendy · 28/11/2013 23:19

The type of gifts my DC get varies, they will be getting a main gift each for around a hundred pounds, then there are books, dvds, games, some toys eg lego, playmobil. Bedroom accessories, clothes and pyjamas. Smellies and art supplies. Don't really get a lot of cheap stocking fillers as I find they just get forgotten about/broken within a week. Obviously there are some exceptions like playing cards. Stocking tends to be chocolate based with the obligatory tangerine.

Luggage16 · 28/11/2013 23:38

lilyaldrin - our 15 are a mix but the total this year is way more than usual! Normally a couple of bigger presents and the rest little bits. This year they have lots of bigger gifts but they have all been great offers (less than half price playmobil set, keyboard, lego friends set, furby etc) but also smaller bits like stationary set, £5 t shirt, books etc

our usual budget is £250 joint (2 children)

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 28/11/2013 23:54

Maybe 30-40 stocking bits from Santa, some of those things are magic flannels, lush bath bombs, books, etc. Stockings are the only thing from FC. Then 10ish things from us, including a new outfit and their main present, and things like Lego sets. Then probably another 40 presents each from the family. Have never added it up though, and its staggered over a couple of days. My families presents go under our tree, and dpps families presents happen on boxing day. We both have enormous families.
It's a lot of stuff but they love it and are appreciative of everything.

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 29/11/2013 00:27

I think mine will have about 10 presents under the tree ranging in price from 99p to about £30 I think. None of them are getting a "big" present.

There are about 14 thinks for their stocking most of which came from the 99p store. So far I have spent just under £100 each and have no plans to buy anything else.

They do get stuff from Grandparents (mine give mainly clothes and ExMIL gives too much), ExSIL and my DB normally gives a gift card with about £30 on.

Inkspellme · 29/11/2013 06:13

I always went by budget and not by number. So it usually works out at under 10 presents including books and other stuff under a tenner. one or two things they've asked for. the rest my choice.

NorthernShores · 29/11/2013 06:29

Gosh. I don't think I knew sine people gave 30 presents! We don't go over board on principle. People are different.

jamtoast12 · 29/11/2013 07:15

I give a main present (anything up to £100) and 20 extra presents (approx £200) and a stocking (£20). For each dd. admittedly they get tons from family too but it's how I was raised and it'd feel wierd any other way.

I've noticed on mumsnet though that there's a real divide which i presume is regional? - as everyone I know near me does similar to me and we are no way rich!!

It'd be interested to see where people live and what their traditions are as they differ so much on here!

Of course the is no rightway to do it.

Locketjuice · 29/11/2013 07:28

I think about 30 from us for ds (nearly 2) and about 20ish for dd (4 months)

I think I don't actually know... And then they have aunt, uncles, grandparents, g.grandparents, and then ds birthday just after!

I like to have a decent sized pile even if I spilt it for when we come hem from dinner at my sisters Smile

CrotchStitch · 29/11/2013 07:34

There is a direct correlation between age of child, total cost and size of present pile. As the first two increase the last one decreases :o
DS has around 10-15 gifts from us but some are new clothes, lots of books and new sports kit (all stuff I would be buying at some point anyway) Always a big present (Xbox this year) and a stocking full of nice things as I have an aversion to plastic crap. In fact his stocking probably costs around £40. I also try and buy good quality things that will last and I may even be able to resell at a later date.
We don't have a large family but he is an only grandchild so is spoilt from that side. Having said that we buy very little outside of birthdays and Christmas so I don't begrudge the cost.

Mittensonkittens · 29/11/2013 09:29

Ds (4) has about 15 plus stocking presents.
We have a teeny tiny family and he won't really get much from anyone else so it's really just what we buy.
He had a few more last year and it was too many. Of those 15 this year some are books and some are games so I'm hoping it will be about the right balance.

Bumblequeen · 29/11/2013 09:47

Dd usually receives around five much wanted presents from us and a packed stocking. We do not place any emphasis on Santa.

Dd does not receive any many gifts from extended family.

Mumof3xx · 29/11/2013 09:55

Ds 1 and 2 have about 20 each at about £150 each and a joint gift that was £130

Dd has about 12 costing about £120

I now feel mean on dd
