Christmas morning breakfast - finger food

clr2014 · 25/11/2013 22:47

We usually have smoked salmon on wheaten / soda bread which we pass round with Bucks Fizz while stockings are being opened in the living room. Time is tight as we head out about 10:30, so no time for a sit down affair. I wondered if anyone had any better ideas?

Have thought about those 'christmas morning muffins' .... but i think when i last made them they didn't live up to the hype.

Anyone else got inspiration for finger food brekkie?

TIA

I'll be happy to share my cinnamon roll recipe but I am American and will have to do the conversions. I;ll get it up later in the day (likely the middle of the night for you all)

VenusDeWillendorf · 26/11/2013 12:22

We have boiled eggs with nutcracker soldiers.
Rather boring!

But then we have a late lunch and just carbs wouldn't keep us going - need a bit of protein in there.

Are the muffins similar to the cinnamon rolls? Anyone have a good recipe for cinnamon rolls - we might have some crispy bacon with them this year....

VenusDeWillendorf · 26/11/2013 12:22

X post callmekitten! Cups would be fine for me.

somersethouse · 26/11/2013 12:24

Ohh! Thank you so much callmekitten a true American récipe even better!

Don't worry about conversions, we can convert! I lived in Canada and so have a cup converter thingy, I think most UK measurers have this too.

Thank you from Spain x

If you like muffins....these Marzipan & Rasperry Muffins are really christmassy, and have now been voted in by the family as a required addition to our usual early morning nibbles of fresh cooked danish pastries (brought as individual frozen items from local farm shop ...but lots of places do them)

NB I don't make the compote to go with muffins. Suspect it would drip all over the wrapping paper!

somersethouse · 26/11/2013 12:36

Thank you VERY much festive I am now indeed feeling very festive and Christmassy!

Smitten kitchen has lots of good rolls recipes...

For example

Cinnamon rolls

Cranberry orange rolls

I have to stick with a savoury breakfast (always smoked salmon!) on Christmas morning, after eating all the chocolate from my stocking the last thing I want is more sugar :)

TheEyeofHarmony · 26/11/2013 12:42

Panettone with a large mug of tea.

confusedabouted · 26/11/2013 12:44

We will have either pancakes with nutella and fruit (bananas or strawberries) or waffles with syrup and bacon, not sure yet,but they are our favourite breakfasts so it will be one of those.

AnneWentworth · 26/11/2013 12:49

I am not sure how we managed this, but we have a full Turkish breakfast that my DC refer to as Christmas breakfast - in fact DS1 reminded me I needed to buy the food - err not yet. But it is olives, feta, eggs, spicy garlic sausage (lucky we go to family for lunch as it really does smell), jam (always runny Turkish jam or homemade that we can dip). Most of it I put into little bowls in the fridge and then just set out in the morning.

I have just realised that my post hasn't really helped.

TeaOneSugar · 26/11/2013 12:59

We made chocolate swirl buns last year, made them Christmas Eve and baked them in the morning.

We're away this year until late on 23rd, so it'll probably be frozen pain au chocolate this year, maybe croissants as well, something quick and easy.

marzipanned · 26/11/2013 13:42

Anne that sounds amazing!

perfectstorm · 26/11/2013 14:24

We have scrambled eggs with chopped smoked salmon stirred in at the last minute and a glass of bucks fizz, but now I want cinnamon rolls for pudding! Pudding for breakfast sounds fine for Christmas, right? Grin

In Australia I had Greek yoghurt with a fruit platter, and then eggs benedict, all washed down with iced coffee. That was amazing too, but not really right for this weather!

DuckToWater · 26/11/2013 14:42

I don't know how people manage to find the time for a proper/special breakfast on Christmas Day- we are too busy opening, assembling and playing with the presents then cooking the dinner- also I don't feel like too much as I don't want to spoil the dinner. You are lucky to get a bit of toast in our house.

duvetfan · 26/11/2013 15:39

We are doing a buffet for our parents. Croissants, rolls, scrambled egg and smoked salmon. Great ideas for extras here. Thanks. X

Alexandrite · 26/11/2013 15:40

IKEA probably have various nice things you could have.

We have chocolate for breakfast on Xmas day and birthdays, but we do eat normal brekkies the rest of the year!

MelanieRavenswood · 26/11/2013 15:43

Panettone for us

EldritchCleavage · 26/11/2013 15:48

Sticky buns. Barefoot Contessa has a very good easy recipe.

mathanxiety · 26/11/2013 16:01

Cinnamon rolls here (American recipe), along with rashers, sausages, scrambled eggs, tea, orange juice. We have dinner around 6 and breakfast is normally late (at least 10 am). For lunch, people are welcome to eat breakfast leftovers and I usually have pate and crackers, pita and hummus, maybe some smoked salmon and brown bread - basically food to pick at if anyone wants it.

Katienana · 26/11/2013 16:06

We have a fruit salad made the day before. As fridge space is tight it's kept in the garage wrapped in plastic bags. Normally has melon, strawberries, grapes, pineapple, kiwi, oranges and apple in it. Sorts you right out if you're hungover and goes nice with bucks fizz/champagne!

4yoniD · 26/11/2013 16:11

hm drop scones / scottish pancakes (only takes seconds to make batter if you measure everything with a mug and stir it all together, no scales and no "mix in a splash of milk at a time") - with syrup for the kids, and bacon for me.

MrsDavidBowie · 26/11/2013 16:12

I have porridge as usual Grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/11/2013 16:22

Croissants for us. Nice and simple but tasty.

I'll be coming in from work so croissants and pressie opening then off to bed for me. I'm sure some chocolate will be consumed by the dses while I sleepGrin

potterpaint · 26/11/2013 16:35

I was going to do drop scones and bacon too. with a plate of sliced mango, raspberries and melon.

I love the idea of cinnamon rolls though... shall look up the recipe.

NCISaddict · 26/11/2013 16:46

We have kedgeree that I make in advance with bucks fizz. Not really finger food but the infants are plenty old enough to not make a mess and with a new hoover puppy all will be well
