Breakfast on Christmas morning?

This is one of the many arguments we have RE Christmas.
Do you make your DC have breakfast before opening presents? DP thinks they should, but I disagree, it seems mean to me.
I'm thinking of maybe getting them some M&S Chocolate Brioche for me the DC to eat during present opening?

We don't really have breakfast, maybe grab a croissant and cuppa during the unwrapping at some point.

FelixCited · 08/11/2013 22:50

I should add we have a very Christmassy breakfast, tablecloth decorations, crackers and special breakfast food, Buck's Fizz etc. This makes it a special occasion and not something to be rushed!

killpeppa · 08/11/2013 22:51

I eat chocolate...

SoonToBeSix · 08/11/2013 22:52

Yes they have rice pudding, but we stagger presents right up to bed time. They do open their stockings in their rooms before breakfast.

JuneauWhoIAm · 08/11/2013 22:57

How is it an anticlimax?
The best thing about getting gifts is actually playing with/using them.

I can't understand the wait at all.
Or maybe your children get too much and have to break it up.

soontobeslendergirl · 08/11/2013 23:01

Juneau - I don't get that either! and my kids do get far too much but we still do it all first thing and then spend the rest of the day putting batteries in and clearing up the devastation playing.

BillyBanter · 08/11/2013 23:06

IIRC it goes like this.

Wake at 4.30 am. Open stocking presents. Sneak through to living room. Open other presents. Arrange presents in pile and take through to bedroom. Eat chocolates while reading annual. Fall asleep and wake up at more sensible hour with melted chocolate in hair. Have a proper look through presents and try them out/on. Discover we don't have the requisite batteries. Have proper breakfast. Nosy round everyone else's presents. Get back to reading annual.

joanofarchitrave · 08/11/2013 23:06

Well, maybe I should try it...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/11/2013 23:07

I disagree about the anti climax too, we do stockings upstairs around 7, then downstairs for about 7.45 to get the oven on, make a cuppa, open a few more presents, grab some croissants etc at some point, pause and clear all the wrapping paper/get the turkey in at some point and carry on opening till it's all done, the opening is just a prelude to the fun of playing with / using the gifts. We don't have a sit down breakfast because that is what we do on the other 364 days of the year and none of us are big breakfast fans anyway.

ravenAnyKucker · 08/11/2013 23:07

Stockings in bed (usually they drag them up to our bed).

Breakfast about 9am - Bloody Mary to blow the cobwebs away, especially if BIL & SIL staying Grin, then dh does posh scrambled eggs, I have smoked salmon bagels. Dc have whichever of these they prefer. Bucks fizz.

Then wait for visiting relatives to turn up eg. MIL, other SIL & Dnephew. Usually mid-morning.

Then presents - takes say from 11-12 as there's ten of us by this point!

I then get Xmas dinner on & we eat about 4pm.

SquirrelNuts · 08/11/2013 23:10

Last year DS was opening his presents till bedtime it took him so long, he had to open and play with everything! So it wasn't really an anti climax for him.
I do like the idea of following a trail of chocolate coins, however I think by the morning it may be a trail of empty foil as the dog would get there first.

whethergirl · 08/11/2013 23:25

There is no way I DS can wait until after breakfast!! How can you pretend you're having breakfast like it's a normal day when there are PRESENTS in the next room? We also munch on stocking chocolates during pressie opening too.

LittleMissGreen · 08/11/2013 23:31

Stockings, breakfast, church, lunch, presents, Christmas dinner, final present off the tree. Sometime in there we tend to go out for a walk - often after the afternoon presents, but can be after church. But definitely stockings before anything else, I think the kids would explode if they had to eat first!

notso · 08/11/2013 23:31

If we had breakfast first the DC would not get everything opened before the in-laws descended!
Stockings first while I go down put the oven on, make a brew put the tree lights on etc. MIL phones at the crack of dawn asking what time the DC got up.
Then FC presents and DH gets the bacon on at some point. The DC have cinnamon buns or something. DH and I sprint off to get dressed, and have a quick tidy.
In-laws arrive, there is a haze of opening, lots of tea, baileys, bacon butties, mince pies and chocs before they bog off for their lunch.
The rest of the day depends on what guests we have but dinner is usually between 4 and 6 and we have the tree presents from friends and family after dinner or on Boxing Day.

IrisWildthyme · 08/11/2013 23:40

Stockings, Breakfast, Church, Tree-presents from persons actually in the same building (enjoyed with bubbly and appetizers), Main meal, Remaining Presents, family activity such as trivial pursuits/long walk/massive screaming argument, port&stilton&chocolates from stockings, terrible TV, sleep.

TeamSouthfields · 09/11/2013 00:06

we get up whenever, people will come down in dribs and drabs, people arrive, normally all by 9am, then we open presents... some people will have toast as they get up or arrive, some won't...
presents are staggered as others arrive during day... we chill out b4 dinner, dinner around 3pm, straight after dinner we play games right up until 10oclock in evening, breaking for snacks and chocolate..

big breakfast at the table is for boxing day.. full English!! Then chilling, then more games and cold meats, salad and goodies around 5, then more games!!

love love love Christmas!!!

marriedinwhiteisback · 09/11/2013 00:13

Well ours were always allowed stocking and chocolate for breakfast. The adults had a cup of tea and a biscuit. Mass at 9.30. Home for 11ish and smoked salmon and champagne with present opening as soon as possible thereafter Grin.

Isthiscorrect · 09/11/2013 07:51

When ds was small it was open his stocking in our bed and we he opened our stockings, then downstairs to get dinner prepared and breakfast ready. Christmas muffins and champagne, prepare muffins day before add wet ingredients and pop in the oven whilst playing with stocking presents. Get washed and dressed (both sets of gp's staying over), cup of tea and ds hands out pressies (this is still his job). This takes ages as nobody can open until the person before has opened theirs. Interspersed with more champagne and canapes. Round the back of the tree is always a game for playing after christmas dinner (3 or 4pm).

TheFallenMadonna · 09/11/2013 07:53

Stockings first thing, then breakfast. We don't open other presents 'til after lunch though...

Dillydollydaydream · 09/11/2013 09:04

Ooh. I'm going to steal the choc coins trail idea :)
I'm also going to tape paper over the living room door this year too!

Usually we do stockings on our bed munch choc and have a cuppa then downstairs for main presents.
We usually have a picky breakfast like croissants do we can eat in living room while kids play and eat more chocolate

ipswichwitch · 09/11/2013 09:11

This will be our first Christmas in our own home with 2yo DS and new baby, so it's going to be a make it up as we go along sort of day. I can tell you it will be a cold day in hell before DS goes without his porridge for breakfast - the boy is obsessed!!

Cupcake11 · 09/11/2013 10:49

When I was younger Christmas with my mum we didn't have stockings and it was straight downstairs to open presents together.
Christmas as my dad's we would open our stockings in our beds but when we came downstairs Father Christmas had always taken the handle off the living room door so we had to have breakfast first. We all moaned how unfair it was but we were so excited it did really add to it.
Having experienced both ways I think we'll go with having breakfast first to prolong the anticipation! Smile

pigsinmud · 09/11/2013 11:00

Same as fallenmadonna. Stockings before breakfast and other presents after lunch.

TerraNotSoFirma · 09/11/2013 11:03

No, I would never make me the DC wait until they'd had breakfast, they get up and have breakfast every single other day of the year. This is CHRISTMAS morning we are talking about :)

A compromise could be to prepare a fruit platter and clingfilm over a plate of brioche and Danish the night before and have a jug of fresh juice in the fridge, all ready to just be plonked on the table in the morning.

FortyFacedFuckers · 09/11/2013 11:05

We do stockings in bed then open all the other presents by which time my parents, brother, sister her kids will be round to see DS's presents and I will then make rolls, sausages, bacon eggs and a glass of Buck's Fizz for the people who don't want just chocolate. Grin
