For the first time ever I'm hosting xmas. I want there to be so loads of snacky food as we are having lunch at 4pm and a bigger breakfast.

So, what bowls of goodies do you have for grazing?!

Thanks.

well nuts of course. ones for cracking and ones that are already done and mixed with dried fruit.
turkish delight
chocolates
crispy/nibbly/savoury things

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/11/2013 20:33

Quality Street are an absolute must, of course.
Some salted caramels, or salted chocolate or, indeed, salted caramel chocolates. :)
Pistachio nuts and those yummy smoked almonds.
Grapes
Satsumas
And I'd never so no to some cheese and biscuits!

Turkish delight is a great suggestion.

DTisMYdoctor · 04/11/2013 20:35

Mince pies surely?

DrHolmes · 04/11/2013 20:48

Ohhh get some filo pastry, camembert and cranberry. Make little parcels and heat in oven. Delicious!

DrHolmes how do you make the filo/cheese/cranberry parcels. I neeeed them in my life this christmas.

Mumraathenoisylion · 04/11/2013 22:00

Delia's christmas book has some fantastic snacks if you feel like making them yourself?

The day before I make the pistachio sables and Parmesan sticks and on the actual day I use some feuille de brick, put Parma ham on it, sprinkle it with pecorino and Rosemary and put it in the oven for 10 mins....it's beautiful and simple...all in the book too.

You can also freeze some sausage rolls ahead of time...just use pre-made pastry and chop up some sage with sausage meat for the filling. Freeze before cooking then they are just as good when cooked from frozen as they are when freshly made.

Don't forget the Pringles Wink

WallyBantersJunkBox · 04/11/2013 22:27

Thank goodness Mum I was wondering when someone was going to mention sausage rolls!!!!

Delia has a cheesy sage version too, which are delicious. I make boxes in advance and shove them in the freezer. Her rough puff pastry is a cinch to make - especially if you grate the frozen butter in a food processor. They reheat well.

Nigellas Christmas book also has some great nibbles - cocktail sausages in a sticky BBQ sauce look nice.

Last year as a joke I made a 1970's cheese and pickle onion hedgehog. It lost it's quills in under 20 mins, I kid ye not. Most popular thing on the table! Shock

Leeds2 · 04/11/2013 22:30

Most people seem to offer dates. I loathe them!

navyeye · 04/11/2013 22:45

Ohh hadn't thought of freezing things ahead of time, just assumed I'd be running around like a loon on the day. Sausages rolls on the list, bleugh to dates, I'm with you Leeds2! [vom]

Blinis with cream cheese and smoked salmon.

Vatta · 04/11/2013 22:52

tootired the parcels are really easy, literally just splodge some Camembert and cranberries (can use fresh, defrosted frozen, or those cranberry sauces in jars) on ready made filo. Pinch the filo up into a parcel around the filling, pop in oven on about 150 for ten mins or until the edges of the filo are brown. Yummy.

Fizzy wine does it for me tbh Grin - sod the food.

Mumraathenoisylion · 05/11/2013 08:45

Ooh Wally cheesy sage sausage rolls sound nice! I think I'd better get my christmas cookbooks out soon. I'm always a bit scared to make savoury pastry, I only seem to be able to do jam tart pastry well...but if it is that easy maybe I'll give it a go?

Mumraathenoisylion · 05/11/2013 08:46

Camembert parcels are on my list now too Grin

DrHolmes · 05/11/2013 10:39

Thanks for saying how to do the parcels vatta. I had gone to bed. Yes I just bought the pastry, jar of cranberry sauce and a pack of camembert. Think you beat an egg and layer up the pastry, maybe four squares of pastry but you do it so the first square goes down then put then next square on as if your making a star and then the next one again at an angle and then the next one. Then splodge the cranberry on and I chopped up squares of cheese then bunch up all the corners of the 'star' slather with egg so it stick together in a parcel and bake. Yum yum yum.
