Thats what I want Chipping! We have one small set but thet aren't big enough for the tree. Ds has them round his wardrobe and they look great. LED just isn't the same.

martinedwards · 18/10/2013 15:20

first weekend in December

GrandPoohBah · 18/10/2013 15:55

So. I always waited until about a week or two before Christmas to buy and put my tree up, as we have real ones. But last year I got chatting to the guy who owns our local garden centre and he said (quite sensibly) that the trees are all cut and delivered at the beginning of December, so the only thing you're doing by delaying is limiting your choice.

So this year I have a plan. I'm going to buy my tree quite early, get it home, chop an inch or so off the bottom and stick it in a bucket of water in the conservatory until we're ready to use it. Then I'll stick it up, let it settle overnight and then we can dress the day after. Sorted!

"Hate them being up too early, I think it really dilutes Christmas."

I agree. Having Christmas start at the beginning of December doesn't make it feel special any more. When I was a child my mum, sister and I used to put the tree up after we had broken up from school. When we were tiny it used to go up on Christmas Eve after we had gone to bed. It felt magical seeing it for the first time on Christmas Day.

We had some American visitors over at the end of September. The shops had already started stocking Christmassy stuff. They couldn't believe how early we start Christmas off in the UK.

I wonder what it is like in other countries?

I always do the first weekend of dec. we get a real tree though and usually it land later than the 1st but the 7th feels too late!!! Not sure ...may have to take a day off!

maybe3x · 18/10/2013 17:10

Usually the second weekend of December, DS birthday on 4th so like to wait until after that. We take it down usually 2nd Jan but has been known before new year, love it in the build up but not so much after the big day!

usualsuspect · 18/10/2013 17:16

This is the Christmas topic, for talking about Christmas.

Don't wanna read it,hide the topic.

Mine usually goes up the first week in December.

tobiasfunke · 18/10/2013 17:17

A week after DH's birthday so the 15thish. Did it a bit early last year and we were generally sick of Christmas by the 25th and we had the decorations down on the 27th. So it will later rather than sooner here this year.
I really hate it now Christmas starts at the end of August. That's when Sainsburys started their Christmas section in our local shop and the co-op had their choc oranges on display. It's totally mad.

Chubfuddler · 18/10/2013 17:22

It's a tension. I'd love the tree up 1st December but I prefer a real tree , and the fucker will stink of dead tree by Xmas day if it has to last that long.

I might start with lights and decs on the 1st.

Floralnomad · 18/10/2013 17:28

I think when you take the tree down is a more interesting question ,although ours goes up on the first weekend of December it's generally down by Dec 28th . We put up a lot of outside lights as well so those go up the last weekend in November so they're ready to turn on on the first , if you don't turn them on then its really not worth the aggravation of spending a day putting them up .

Bunbaker · 18/10/2013 17:45

OH's birthday is on4th January so the tree goes down before then so Christmas and his birthday are separate. I am desperately sick of the clutter by then anyway.

fuzzpig · 18/10/2013 17:49

Usually around the time the DCs break up from school. Our living room is tiny.

BrokenBananaTantrum · 18/10/2013 17:51

Always the first weekend in December. My parents did this when we were little and we still do it now. I LOVE christmas.

Bunraku · 18/10/2013 20:26

1st December but since it's a Sunday I can't guarantee I won't give in to temptation on the Saturday :)

olibeansmummy · 18/10/2013 20:42

Will probably put it up on the 8th this year and take it down on the 2nd Jan. I don't think you'll get a fair sample on here though as most of us have been in the Christmas spirit since the start of Sept :o

pastelmacaroons · 18/10/2013 21:13

IN our case its more a question of when will the tree be taken down.

I tend to take it down mid January, depending on smell, or sometimes if it will last, the decs and tree can still very happily be up until Valentines day. Halloween Shock

I find January a very tough cold depressing month and I have no wish to add to that by stripping the house back to ordinary just because somewhere once some one said it should be so.

pastelmacaroons · 18/10/2013 21:15

bunbaker

Why does his his bday have to be so separate from xmas, my DH wouldn't give a shit and would prefer to defer to the children.

Do you decorate the house for his birthday with banners or anything? Just curious.....

but i am an old gimmer at a stage where i dont care for birthdays anymore

ringaringarosy · 18/10/2013 22:49

Last weekend of November here!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 19/10/2013 03:08

It always used to be the first weekend in December, but since no son got old enough to understand, he always asks if we can do it on his borthday (Dec 13th) so we have cake and pop and the DCs decorate the tree as part of his birthday celebrations now.
I do like to take it down on New Year's Day, even though DH prefers to wait for Jan 6th.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 19/10/2013 03:08

oops no4 son even ^

ThreeCacklesLovesCandyApples · 19/10/2013 08:32

Another 1st of December here as I love cosy night's snuggled with couvers, fairy lights, movies and my family utter bliss

on the flip side I take it down Christmas night I am a meany after all yhe mess of the millions of presents I cant stand the mess Grin

cocoleBOO · 19/10/2013 08:40

First Sunday in December, it comes down the day after Boxing Day. Last year I took the baubles off it, kept the lights and tinsel on it and stuck it in the cupboard under the stairs. This way I don't have to spend hours untangling the hundreds of lights I put on it Grin.

I have fairy lights up all year round Blush.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 19/10/2013 08:50

Christmas tree goes up the Saturday/Sunday before Christmas and comes down on 12th Night. I would prefer it to go up Christmas Eve but I'm generally too busy that day as I work for the church and we are wall to wall services that day.

The church Christmas tree which is 30 ft high is going up at the beginning of December this year as the season of Christmas outside of the Church starts around 1st December when inside the church we are observing Advent. We are going to experiment with having the tree and crib out so that those people who pop into the church during the day to remember loved ones will see some of Christmas even through, technically, it is too early.
