There has been a great thread the last couple of years where people said what they had got for their dc. It was really helpful and gave me lots of ideas for my nieces presents. I have boys and am clueless as to what girls toys are suitable at different ages. Since theres no thread like this yet, i thought I'd start one :)

Ds 1(6)

Star wars Lego set
Captain America shield

Dinosaur book
Build your own volcano kit
Sticker book
Selection box
Stocking fillers

Ds 2 (4)

Anyone else want to share what their kids are getting?

FeijoaVodkaAndCheezels · 16/12/2012 14:14

This thread is obscene. Why do (time of) you spend so much?

slatternlymother · 16/12/2012 14:16

feijoa why does this thread bother you? I don't think it's obscene. It's nice to get ideas.

difficultpickle · 16/12/2012 15:33

Most of ds's stuff he would get anyway, other than the scooter. However it is nice to have presents to unwrap at Christmas. You don't need to spend a fortune. My db and sil do spend a fortune (at least to me) on their dcs - over £500 each - and they end up not bothering to even unwrap some of their presents as they get so much.

BluelightsAndSirens · 16/12/2012 16:01

I've bought everything in flash sales since August through to December.

Christmas Eve basket.

PatTheHammer · 16/12/2012 17:08

Xmas Confused I don't think anyone has written anything that implies spending an obscene amount. I've seen far worse, where people run into thousands.

Anyway:
Presents will always look a lot when written as a list, if you look at the wrapped pile it really won't be huge amounts of stuff.
Many people will have been purchasing gifts throughout the year, buying in sales etc.
Little kids toys and books REALLY aren't that expensive in the main (excepting technology type stuff, lego and playmobil).
Some people have written everything that their DC are getting from ALL their families (and some people have large families.
Some people don't buy any toys and stuff for their kids during the year except birthdays and Christmas.
Some people don't go overboard at birthdays as they spend on a party instead.
Some people can simply afford it and like to buy lots of gifts.

I think I agree with the OP, its good to get ideas for other children you may need to buy for but don't necessarily know what they like. For example i have 4 nephews of various ages and its useful for me to see what some of the older boys are getting.

Acinonyx · 16/12/2012 17:46

Interesting o compare ideas. All the lists look pretty normal to me. If Xmas didn't exist, we'd just get her this stuff some other time.

SHoHoHodan · 16/12/2012 18:17

I wish I'd seen this before I went present shopping for my nieces (12 and 10). I spent half the time on the phone to their mum ('What about sequins? Are sequins 'in' this year? Do they wear black? Surely not? Really? Young girls wear black now do they? What size? DN2 is 10 but wears 9-10 in this shop but 11-12 in that one? Wouldn't they like vouchers?') and the rest of the time muttering to myself ('I'm not getting them that! That looks way too old for them! Oh God. What shall I get them????')

However for my own two boys I got:

ds1 (16)

A hairdryer (a new found interest in 'primping' has led to much appropriation of my hairdryer and I want it back)
A large mirror (see above)
FIFA 3 (or whatever number) for xBox 360
2 long-sleeved t-shirts
Hollister smellies
Something else which I've forgotten now I've wrapped it.

ds2 (5)

2 Lego sets
Justin annual
Meccano
Mario Kart pyjamas
Mister Maker craft set
Angry Birds slippers
Dressing gown
Astral projection torch.

Both have stockings with chocolate Santas and various age-appropriate little gifts in.

One problem is that they both have birthdays relatively close to Xmas so have to stretch the ideas between both. Plus doting GPs + large family tend to shower them with stuff.

omletta · 16/12/2012 18:33

DSD aged 15

Cheapie tablet and case
Apps on tablet
Designer perfume
Firetrap top
Diary
Chocolate (lots of)
Gloves
Wash bag with loads of lovely, bespoke, products
Sock slippers

DSD aged 13

As above ( but different types of ISWIM ?)

DS aged 10

First thing gifts - these are opened whilst his sisters are at their Mum's opening her and their SF's presnents:
Stunt skates (aggressives)
Onsie
Skinny chinos
Blue toothspeaker
Stocking ( with too many things to list...)

Gifts to open when sisters arrive at midday:
Exactly as for DSDs (less wash bag - DS doesn't wash!)

Ours is complex because of the DSD, but this is what I do to make it fair - plus DSDs mum buys for DS and I for her other DD...works for us!

DS is 5 months. He gets a posh rattle from me and DH, nothing from my practical, level headed parents. Probaby excessive stuff from MIL.

BluelightsAndSirens · 17/12/2012 09:41

For those that struggle this is what I do for my 3 children, they don't have granny, aunts, auncles, cousins that buy them gifts so Christmas presents are only bought by me, list is up thread.

We get paid monthly so after bills I work out what is left for each week and thenbwork my food budget out, leaving some money spare for diesel and spends.

If I don't spend a weeks shopping money (tries very hard by using a meal plan) what I have left goes in the Christmas box (can be between £2 - £20)

Child benefit is included in our monthly amount so I spend that on food and children's needs.

I shop through cash back sites and use Sainsbury petrol station to build up points on that card and tesco online for food to collect vouchers for Christmas. Any extra money I get along the way, EBay, netmums, facebook selling goes away for Christmas.

I also have a staff bonus scheme that I get high street vouchers with so I save them up to.

I then get on here and join the bargain thread around Sept\aug and pick up the bargins that way,for example the paper Jamz rrp is £30 I got them in a flash sale for £5 each through a cash back site.

It means I get more for the money I have saved and that their main present isn't bought with cash cause I use points, vouchers and cash back that I have saved through the year.

Www.moneysavingepert.com has been very useful but the Christmas bargins thread has saved me the most money and bumped up what I have bought with some great, cheap fun ideas. The Christmas hamper is going to be great tis year and cost me £10 per child.

I don't use credit cards and am in no debt for Christmas, still got food to buy but we could live off chocolate at this rate, half price Thornton selection boxes cheaper than 3 normal ones in home bargins.

Hope this post helps give someone some planning ideas for next year, as soon as the last bin bag of wrapping paper is in the wheelie bin I'm starting to plan for 2013, birthdays aren't a big thing here just cake and a gift from us and we don't go in for holidays because of work commitments so Christmas is my one time a year that I can sit back and spoil them rotten, they are great kids most of the time so deserve it Grin

Asda have sponge bob square pants magic flannels for £1 and bath crayons.
