I have that nagging feeling, although my husband and I can't think of anything! So, here's the menu. What have I forgotten:

Turkey
Gravy
Sausage Stuffing
Sage and onion stuffing
Roast potatoes
Sprouts
Sausages
Bacon
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Christmas pudding
Brandy butter

Anyone?

We have loads more veg but agree don't have it just for the sake of it - have what you want. We always have yorkshire puddings though with any roast not just Christmas roast

ColdWinterNights · 15/12/2012 20:44

Yorkshire Puddings. I'd get lynched if I forgot them.

Sleepstarved · 15/12/2012 21:02

I'd have more veg too, can't see how eating more veg and less meat, stuffing ect would lead to you getting fat Xmas Confused you don't need a whole plateful for it to count as one portion.
And five a day is a myth, it should really be 7 to 9 but gov guidelines say 5 cos they thought that was more realistic for people, same thing with 6g of salt per day.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/12/2012 21:08

I second the Yorkshire Puddings. (I usually drag Aunt Bessie out of the freezer but I'm going to do some proper ones this year)

Have you got:
soft drinks
chilled water
ice
lemon/orange slices and marachino cherries on cocktail sticks?

nice coffee
chocolates/After Eights

candles and crackers?

LaCiccolina · 15/12/2012 21:09

Veg eg carrots. If also pan fry sprouts with chestnuts and pancetta.... Taste much better.

Kitsilano · 15/12/2012 21:12

Turkey foil?

poncyettia · 15/12/2012 21:17

Cheese board?

And YYY to more veg

Hulababy · 15/12/2012 21:23

Another one who would add more veg, esp ones to roast - parsnips, carrots and red onion.

And Yorkshire Puddings.

PeppermintonCandyCane · 15/12/2012 21:24

Chestnuts
cream for the pud
CRACKERS!
and more veg obviously

WeAreEternal · 15/12/2012 21:33

Too much veg... Yes that is what makes people fat. Xmas Hmm

We have at least five veg, (sprouts, cabbage, carrots, broccoli and sweetcorn for DS, because it is his favorite)
Two kinds of meat (the bird and sausages wrapped in bacon)
Two stuffings (homemade chestnut and cranberry and apple and walnut)
Two kinds of potatoes (mashed and roasted)
Parsnips (honey roasted)
Yorkshire pudding (big homemade ones)
Gravy, sauces and condiments.

hugoagogo · 15/12/2012 22:44

Carrots, peas, leeks and cabbage, maybe some neeps they are really good with the stuffing. If there's not enough room-ditch the turkey. Grin

chocolateicecream · 15/12/2012 22:49

My Christmas day heaven meal goes like this,

Roast pots,
carrots,
sprouts (practically raw)
cabbage,
swede,
roast onion,
home made stuffing,
Yorkshire puds,
peas,
parsnips,
leeks,
veggie type thing preferably containing stinky cheese and nuts,
onion gravy,
mint sauce.

Feeling fat and round I then like to move over to the Xmas pud, brandy butter sauce with a bit of an extra dribble of brandy just to be on the safe side.

No booze for me this year [sulk].

OP I bet that this would make you gag! Each to their own I guess.

Op, how about some novelty chocolate favours? You sound like you have plenty so enjoy.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2012 22:52

Veg

Not peas though, that's just wrong. Nor sweetcorn.

Roast parsnips, swede and carrot mash, spiced red cabbage, sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts.

Salivating just thinking about it.

ChristmasSpiritEndorphins · 16/12/2012 08:24

What is this red cabbage I have seen mentioned frequently?

BendyBobsBrusselsSprouts · 16/12/2012 08:35

This just shows how everyone's Christmas dinner is slightly different which is lovelyXmas Smile.

(Just as everyone has a different way of making bolognaise sauce)

I'm curious to see some people have mashed potato as well as roast potatoes. Now that's something I'd never have thought of! But no rights or wrongs - have what you and your family love esp at Christmas.

Narked · 16/12/2012 12:47

Shredded red cabbage cooked with apple and spices.

Like this.

DH's family do it. I believe red cabbage should only exist in two states - raw in salads or pickled.

Narked · 16/12/2012 12:49

Boiled and roast in my family. Irish roots. Potatoes are a big deal.

Lovecat · 16/12/2012 17:15

Rice with peas and onions (cheat and buy Birds' Eye Veg Rice). We always had this with a roast dinner as kids, my Dad was from SA and apparently this is a traditional thing there?

canyou · 16/12/2012 17:43

Hmm think I maybe over doing things we have very fussy eaters here thou

Starter Melon or smkd salmon or egg mayo
Soup Asparagus, Oxtail or Veg
Mains Meat Turkey, ham. spiced beef [I am irish from Cork] Plain chicken fillet skin on no bones, tuna steak, venison Veggie nut free nut loaf veggies with nut allergies not figured out what to make yet
Veg Roast Potato one lot on goose fat one veggie lot Creamed Potato, Potato lyonaisse [sp?] Plain boiled Potato Potato Croquettes
Sprouts, carrots, parsnips, Mushy processed peas, garden peas and sweetcorn, broccoli, Cauliflower cheese from aldi I will pop in a tray and burn the bags
Mince pies, Trifle, Banoffee pie. jelly and ice cream, cheese board and fruit plate
There will be 16 adults and 10 kids Xmas Grin

I wonder why I dislike Christmas Xmas Confused

amck5700 · 16/12/2012 18:47

BendyBob - the mash with it is great as it helps to soak up the gravy - we make too much usually then the left over mash get roasted in the oven for boxing day with the rest of the leftovers and we make fresh mash :) - sometimes I like a wee layer of mash on my Christmas Dinner sandwich :)

buttons99 · 16/12/2012 19:26

I have always had mash but done it little spirrals piped with an icing bag and large nozzle. I remember making them with my Mum and popping them in the freezer the week before. I have done them each year since I have been a Mum but wasn't going to do them this year as the kids are older now, but nearly had world war 3 when said I wasn't!! Apparantly it wouldn't be Christmas dinner without them. Cooks quickly from frozen as its cooked mash you are using.

ChristmasSpiritEndorphins · 18/12/2012 08:59

Narked thank-you for the recipe. It sounds interesting.

MERLYPUSS · 18/12/2012 09:18

I am cooking for the hoards with varying dietary issues.
STARTER
pate and salad
mozarella and tomato salad with pesto (veggies)
melba toast
MAIN
turkey and fake turkey roast thingy
pork & crackling
pigs in blankets
sausage meat stuffing and meat free for veggies
peas (coz I love them), brocolli & cauli (DT2s fave), roast pots, carrots, sprouts and one parsnip for my dad as they are vile.
Bread sauce, cranberry (bleugh - jam and meat?) and certainly NO YORKSHIRES as we are not having beef and I am a snob.Xmas Grin
DESERT
mincemeat sllice (I am sick of throwing out 3/4 of a pud)
Choc cheesecake (for the dried fruit phobes)
Trifle (booze free for kids)
Custard, icecream, poring cream and squirty cream for kids.
We plan to eat starters then take the dogs out, then have main, then send the fellas out to wash up then about 6 o/c have desert.

canyou · 18/12/2012 21:17

I forgot about sausage stuffing Xmas Shock
Aldi have small individual portion puddings that pass the taste test here instead of a normal sized one
