Christmas trifle

I always make a trifle for Christmas Day alternative dessert to the pud. My dad has actually asked specifically for it this year though! (If you knew my dad you'd realise this is a big breakthrough for me!!)

I have bought a lovely stemmed trifle dish this year as we are going to my DB and his family for Christmas Day.

I don't want to make anything with alcohol in it for various medical reasons within the family and the kids will be eating it too.

So am looking for inspiration - what's your favourite trifle recipe?

Birds in a box [helpful]

seriously though I shall be looking for inspiration as I also want to do one this year, non jelly - have bought some posh plum conserve to use.

If your Dad has specifically asked for it, doesn't that mean that whatever you did last year was perfect? Just do that again!

My lovely [RiP] Grandma's sherry trifle. Sponge fingers, two (or more - to personal taste!) dessert spoons of sherry drizzled over, cover with seedless raspberry jam, then either home-made custard or a good quality vanilla custard and finally top with whipped cream. I sometimes decorate with raspberries and/or white chocolate shavings.

Doh! Just got so excited about the thought of trifle that I completely ignored the alcohol bit in your post! Instead of sherry, you can use orange or mango juice.

DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 13:39

I like trifle which isn't too traditional - no jelly or cocktail fruit for example, and definitely no cherries or angelica. I have a Pinterest page of trifle recipes, I can put it here if you like.

Frostyfoxy · 14/12/2012 13:39

Sounds lovely Bear! With or without the sherry! Xmas Grin

Betterwhenthesunshines - I can't remember what I did last year!! Xmas Blush

Double you need to put a disclaimer for diet-busting with that link! That tiramisu trifle looks divine! [fat face emoticon]

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/12/2012 13:46

No alcohol in mine (don't drink) or jelly (vegetarian)

Swiss roll (jam or jam/cream)
Peaches (put some of the juice over the cake) tinned
Fruit squirts (from Lakeland Limited). Strawberry and if I have the time to hoik the seeds out, Passionfruit.
Sliced strawberries if there's nice ones (and my DD and guinea-pigs haven't eaten them all)
Custard- I can't abide custard but I do like Sainsburys Taste the Difference fresh custard
Then cover with clingfilm and chill overnight .

Whipped cream
Crushed peanut or almond brittle (DH doesn't eat chocolate)

I've bought a special trifle bowl this year.Usually a big glass bowl, but bought a smaller one with a stem. Smile

DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 13:47

Yes definitely not a diet pinboard! TBH I don't really have any diet pinboards ... Oops.

Frostyfoxy · 14/12/2012 13:58

I agree with Bear - Doublemum they look gorgeous!! How can I choose just one??!!

70 - I'm off to find out what fruit squirts are!!

I fancy doing a peanut butter one myself but am not sure anyone else would eat it, so tragically I might have to go MY WHOLE LIFE without eating one.
collapses tragically

LittleAbruzzenBearLovesYuleLog · 14/12/2012 14:06

Ooh a peanut butter one would go down well in our house, yum! In fact there isn't much we don't eat, only raw tomato (me) and raw celery (DH), but pretty sure no trifle with those in exists, except at maybe Heston Blumenthal's house.

betterwhenthesunshines · 14/12/2012 14:12

double you could just make a peanut butter one. Wait for no-one to eat it - and then eat the whole lot yourself. I ate all of ours last year

Frostyfoxy · 14/12/2012 14:13

I'll come and have some peanut butter one with you Doublemum!! Just to keep you company you understand...!!

DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 14:14

Surely even Heston wouldn't make a trifle with raw celery? Everyone knows celery is Satan's Vegetable.

betterwhenthesunshines · 14/12/2012 14:14

A banoffie one would be good - maybe with Jamaica ginger cake, rum, sliced bananas, stem ginger in syrup, custard and cream....

LittleAbruzzenBearLovesYuleLog · 14/12/2012 14:16

I don't know, some funny things are made in that Fat Duck kitchen!

A banoffie one sounds wonderful too.....oooh, decisions.

Frostyfoxy · 14/12/2012 14:18

Banoffie trifle sounds lovely but my dm is allergic to bananas!!

OP posts:
DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 14:19

Mmmm Jamaica ginger cake ...

DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 14:20

It seems a peanut butter trifle is necessary. I will tell DH, although he will be slightly bemused given that he and the 2 mini-hims detest peanut butter. How long do you think is long enough before I can assume nobody else is going to eat it? Half an hour?

AFingerofFudge · 14/12/2012 14:22

double that pinterest page is fantastic. I love trifle!!

How about putting swiss roll slices in the bottom??

DoubleMum · 14/12/2012 14:23

Frosty shall we have a peanut butter trifle party? All peanut butter lovers welcome!
PS I didn't even know anyone could be allergic to bananas!

Frostyfoxy · 14/12/2012 14:31

That's my mum for you!! Grin

Peanut butter trifle party - yay!!! I can bring some Reeces cups that I've hidden in the back of the cupboard from our trip to NY in October that I'm saving for Christmas too!
