Christmas pudding will be on the menu.

But the dc don't like it (not keen on loads of dried fruit) so I'd like to offer them an alternative as well.

We tend not to bother with pud on Christmas Day as we are too full. We have it after a cold turkey lunch on Boxing Day instead.

forevergreek · 09/12/2012 19:54

Chocolate trifle :)

NotGoodNotBad · 09/12/2012 20:10

I've made zucotto a couple of times - it's a bit of a faff to make but lovely. Can't be bothered to go and get my recipe and type it in, but there are lots online. It's just the right combination of yummy, rich pudding and refreshing contrast to the heavy meal you've (probably) just had.

FannyBazaar · 09/12/2012 20:13

I had no idea it wasn't child friendly either. I wouldn't be giving my DC an alternative if that's what the grown ups were having.

tilder · 09/12/2012 20:13

Nigella does a brilliant sweet chestnut and meringue thing. Is very easy. From memory do thin, plate sized meringue discs (i think I did 3 of them). Mix sweetened chestnut puree with double cream (guess might be best lightly whipped) and then layer meringue and chestnut. Freeze.
Delicious sliced like a cake. Quite festive too. Yum, think I might make it again Grin

tilder · 09/12/2012 20:14

Should have said my 4 year old ate 3 slices.he hates fruit too.

DontmindifIdo · 09/12/2012 20:26

See, I can't stand Christmas pudding, so this year I'll be doing lime cheesecake with a ginger nut base (sort of festive...)

What about making something gingerbready? That's festive....

amck5700 · 09/12/2012 20:54

Profiteroles?
Mini trifles?
Pannetone?

fossil97 · 09/12/2012 20:56

Unbelievably my DC love Christmas pudding too. Previous years though I've offered a chocolate steamed pudding - it only need be a tiny serving.

amck5700 · 09/12/2012 21:00

My eldest son is the only one in our house that likes it, so we never have it. He is happy with any kind of fruit cake or loaf or pudding - smothered in custard :)

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 09/12/2012 21:03

I can't stand Christmas pudding and neither can my DCs, we usually just have some good quality vanilla ice cream. We aren't really pudding eaters to be honest.

exexpat · 09/12/2012 21:05

I can't stand Christmas pudding, and neither can the DCs, so we have chocolate fudge pudding (the kind that ends up cakey on top with sauce underneath) with icecream or cream. If you wanted something lighter, the similar lemon pudding is delicious too.

exexpat · 09/12/2012 21:06

Spookily similar wording with whoknowswhere, there...

Festivedidi · 09/12/2012 21:07

We usually have cheesecake of some sort here because I'm the only one who likes Christmas pudding and it seems a bit gluttonous to have a whole one to myself.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 09/12/2012 21:08

Spooky!

nickelbabylyinginamanger · 09/12/2012 21:29

if they don't like dried fruit, then chocolate trifle or ice cream.

nickelbabylyinginamanger · 09/12/2012 21:32

or treacle sponge if you're doing custard.

my autocorrect has changed custard to mustard. do they not have custard in America? Confused Shock

IvanaNapAfterChristmasDinner · 09/12/2012 21:32

panetone - Italian equivalent (sort of) you Can get fruit, plain or chocolate. It's a bit like brioche but tall-cake shaped and yummy Xmas Grin

BahSaidPaschaHumbug · 09/12/2012 21:59

Mmm, treacle sponge...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2012 22:03

Last year I made chocolate cups (melted chocolate painted onto a silicone cupcake mould, layered thin and chilled- do several thin layers). Filled with a white chocolate pudding (Milky Bar IIRC) , with a scoop of vanilla and crumbled Matchmakers.
I bought chocolate spoons, but this year I have a silicone spoon mould from Lakeland. (I think they had this on Christmas Eve. DH and I had trifle)

This year DH is working on the 24th so we'll have our meal later (usually Big Lunch)
I've got a silicone mould with tiny fluted shaped.I'm doing different flavour jellies to pile in a glass with ice-cream and fruit. (And the chocolate spoons)

For Christmas Day we're having a steamed sponge and syrup pudding. We don't like the Christmas Pud but I've got a Portmerion Holly and Ivy basin and small jug that needs to be used Xmas Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/12/2012 22:05

Oh exexpat I love that lemon pudding with the sponge/sauce Smile

louismummy · 09/12/2012 22:09

delia's chocolate bread and butter pudding is yummy and is delicious eaten the day after if there's any left overs.

pELFicFloorClenchReminder · 09/12/2012 22:09

We have black forest trifle - a bottom of chocolate brownie soaked in cherry juice, then cherries and a mixture of whipped cream and greek yoghurt, grated chocolate and edible glitter on the top.

TooWetToWoo · 11/12/2012 07:26

We don't like Christmas pud either. Last year we got a giant version of a French Fancy, it was white with a cute little polar bear on.
