So DS1 started school this year and I've discovered the delights of what to buy for his teacher!
What do you buy? I'm wracking my brains and very stumped ... would it be really bad to buy choc or biscuits or smellies or wine? Did consider the Oxfam unwrapped.
Thanks

I have the same thing, 2 teachers and 2 TAs so don't want to spend too much, I was thinking maybe a lush bath bomb and a card each? Or some nice handcream?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 29/11/2012 13:59

Although DSis and DSil are both teachers so I will ask them both later and hopefully contribute something meaningful to this thread later!

WhitesandsofLuskentyre · 29/11/2012 14:11

I bought all DS's nursery helpers a really nice Christmas decoration each last year, and they all seemed to be very appreciative. I think I'll do the same this year. Then at least they could look at their tree and think "that was a present from one of the children I look after".

sheeplikessleep · 29/11/2012 14:23

Fisharefriendsnotfood - lush bath bombs are a good idea. I got the nursery girls one of those each last year.

WhitesandofLuskentyre - another good idea, thank you. I'm going to John Lewis later this afternoon, so might have a look at their decs.

I went for the Christmas theme as well like Whitesandsofluskentyre. I figure Christmas themed stuff is good as they can bring it out once a year and it doesn't clutter up their house. I got DS's nursery ladies a Christmas tealight holder with a smelly christmas tealight. I got them from Achica so they were half price though they had nice ones in Sainsburys.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/11/2012 14:36

Christmas tree decoration in a card they have made. Can't go wrong Smile

AriNi31 · 29/11/2012 15:18

Ive bought DS's teacher and TA handcream from Molton Brown. I used the codes from the bargain threads so it really was a bargain! Grin
I do like the idea of a decoration though too.

Speedos · 29/11/2012 20:44

Bottle of wine and Christmas chocolate thing from M&S each for teacher and TA.

WineGless · 29/11/2012 20:54

Box of Thorntons chocs to share between TA's and Cath Kidston mug for teacher this year. Have bought Xmas decorations for teachers last year

TreadOnTheCracks · 29/11/2012 21:01

I always go for coloured pens. You can get packs of nice different coloured gel pens from most £1 shops.

I am a TA and you can never have enough pens!

SurvivalOfTheUnfittest · 29/11/2012 22:30

I second (or third) the tasteful Christmas decoration idea. When I get mine out each year, I remember the specific children who gave them to me. For the DC's teachers I've gone for ones from HeavenSends this year - saw the dangly, tin Father Christmas and Snowman ones in a garden centre.

ninah · 29/11/2012 22:32

one of my dc gave me a ceramic star for the tree they'd made at one of those pottery for kids places with their name on back - lovely idea

ninah · 29/11/2012 22:34

and while we are on here, how about teachers' gifts for children - i was thinking of giving little individual animals made out of seed pods, that nod their heads - ethically sourced etc - would your dc like this?

Beamur · 29/11/2012 22:37

Last year I gave the Teacher and TA a nice mug and some home made biscuits. As they no doubt get a ton of stuff each year, I'd go for something either useful or perishable - like food/wine, but the personalised touch is nice too.

jojane · 30/11/2012 00:16

I went for tummy pens last year, figured teachers can never have too many pens!

cazza2878 · 30/11/2012 04:53

For my dd's teacher and ta, I made a photo mug each on photobox (using 50% off code). Put the group class photo on it along with their name and class name. Have popped a Thornton choc rectangle gift tag thing inside it that has thank you iced on it.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 30/11/2012 11:42

I was going to do jars of peppermint bark for them, but a thread here put me off, as apparently 50% of teaching staff bin all homemade food gifts. Sad I think I'll buy some of those canvas shopping bags and get DS1 to personalise them with fabric pens and stick-on felt flower shapes. Book bags. Smile

GladbagsGold · 30/11/2012 11:56

I've just ordered a personalised pen for each of the DC's teachers. I didn't want to get them 'clutter' and I might also get them a bath bomb each.

rotavirusrita · 30/11/2012 12:04

we are clubbing together and paying for a manicure and pedicure for our teacher. last yr she got chocolates ( mixed yr classes in small school). WE know her quite well so know the voucher would be appreciated.

zipzap · 30/11/2012 12:35

I've given teachers and TAs a nice small umbrella in the past which has gone down well - figure they are the sort of thing that you use and break or lose, plus it's handy to have a spare in the car or to leave at school etc. There are some nice dinky ones that fold up small and have nice patterns on in TKMaxx at the moment - £7 or so instead of about twice that.

Or something from M&S plus a gift receipt!

This year need something different as ds2 has just started school and has got the same teacher as ds1 so can't give the same thing again...

kateecass · 30/11/2012 13:19

We've done the Xmas decoration in the past. I get the kids to chose it and I try to get one the kids can sign on the back, so they know who it's from.

This year my DS has sewn little stockings to give his teacher. It was something she introduced him to..sewing that is..so I thought it was a clever idea. It will contain a body shop bargain hand cream!! DD is going to make tree decs out of airdrying clay and decorate with silver glitter glue.

FreckledLeopard · 30/11/2012 13:21

I always get DD's teachers chocolates however one year the teacher was allergic to chocolate therefor I got biscuits and for a male teacher I would suggest wine (turns out to be a good gift!)

FreckledLeopard · 30/11/2012 13:25

And my DD's godmother who is a teacher once got a Russle & Bromleys purse!

TreadOnTheCracks · 30/11/2012 13:55

I have also given small umbrellas in the past, they are always useful.

2cats2many · 30/11/2012 13:56

I did handcream last year. It went down well.
