Rummikub or Ingenious or Qwirkle?

Dc are 7 and 8.

Would like something that we can all play together and that dh and I will enjoy rather than grinding our teeth down to stumps with boredom and/or re-explanation of the rules every 3 mins.

Stealth maths experience would be a bonus.

Ability to transport and play in a tent a double bonus.

OH COME ON.

Jesus threads are hard work these days.

I'll buy the first sodding game someone suggests.

I don't know ingenious or quirkle but my DC's loved (and still love Rummikub). There is a children's version which might be better for your DCs (pictures of animals I seem to recall rather than the adult numbers verision, which might be a bit difficult for 7/8 - and you could keep that one to replace it as they grow out of it?)

SlubberMistressOfPain · 28/11/2012 12:39

Thank you lilo Smile

Will check out the animal one.

I also dont know the other games but I'm another vote for Rummikub. My dc are 11, 8 & 6 and can all play it altho I sometimes team up with the 6 year old since the rest of us are demons especially the 8 year old. It doesnt really teach any Maths apart from at the beginning to try and add up to 30 but its a great strategical game.
Have heard you can get a word version which is a bit like scrabble but have never played it.

bodiddly · 28/11/2012 17:57

How about Yahtzee? My 7 year old ds loves it and he has to do his times tables and add up to play!

VivaLeBeaver · 28/11/2012 18:09

Ziggerty is loads of fun. Hard to get hold of in the uk, I got one shipped from America as I loved it so much when I played it a friends house. [[
popular.ebay.com/toys-and-hobbies/zigity.htm here]]

Square Up also good but no maths. Only 2 players at a time. here

I'm looking at getting Killer Bunnies for dd for Xmas as that looks good.

UNO is a classic.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/11/2012 18:10

And all of mine are very transportable for camping.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 28/11/2012 18:16

Qwirkle. We love it, had it for a few years now (oddly enough, since DS1 was 8yo and DS2 was 7yo...), and it is still regularly played with now they are 9 & 10.

SlubberMistressOfPain · 28/11/2012 21:47

Thanks all. Will ponder on. Off to look at Viva,s ones.

Qwirkle Cubes is better than Qwirkle for stealth maths, as you get the added excitement of judging dice rolls/probability :)

fuzzpig · 28/11/2012 21:56

Off to google killer bunnies!

Lyftiduft · 28/11/2012 22:08

Blokus is good- spatial awareness type skills. Can play as a pair or 4.

OrangeforDd · 29/11/2012 09:08

Travel rummikub is excellent. Tiles cleverly pack into yellow plastic cover which when opened become the holders for the tiles....our favourite game.

fuzzpig · 29/11/2012 09:24

Pentago is very good, only two player though.

fuzzpig · 29/11/2012 09:28

Phase 10 is a decent card game involving numbers.

Agree with Yahtzee too, lots of numbers and probability as you are rolling dice.

SoupDragon · 29/11/2012 09:30

I love Bananagrams. No maths at all but the tiles are so lovely and tactile.

cmt1375 · 29/11/2012 09:33

I'm with Soupdragon, Bananagrams is great. I also play whist and crib with my 6 and 8 yr olds.

MerryMarigold · 29/11/2012 09:34

UNO - oh yes!

We love Rummikub too, but no way 7yr old ds could do it.

Boggle is another classic.

Yahtzee is great, used to spend many holidays playing it back to back with my sis!

PandaG · 29/11/2012 09:37

qwirkle is fab, and has been played in a tent - floor does ned to be relatively flat though. Only maths really is adding up the scores.

I think a 7 and 8 yo could cope with ordinary Rummikub, is more sequences than maths with the numbers iirc.

I love Ingenious. Easy to explain but totally engrossing. Can be played equally well by 2,3 or 4 players. This also needs a flat surface to be played on, as the tiles need to stay in the right place on the board (like in scrabble)

MerryMarigold · 29/11/2012 09:37

As an aside, does anyone remember September? I found our old one in my Mum and Dad's house. I don't think it ever took off (even in our board game hungry house) despite being advertised as 'the next Scrabble'.

Oh another major favourite was Mastermind. Love that.

fuzzpig · 29/11/2012 09:38

I've been thinking about getting ingenious for a while, is it different enough from qwirkle to make it worthwhile though?
