DS is now 2 and we want to start putting in place some family traditions this Christmas - when he's still young enough not to remember any total disasters!

First up is a new DVD to watch together as a family on Christmas Eve - any suggestions??

If he's only 2 I'd keep it short - perhaps Frosty the Snowman?

For future years, Polar Express - only discovered it last year through MN and loved it - can't wait to watch this year!

One massive vote for Arthur Christmas here, we went to the cinema to see it last year and I came home and pre ordered it straight away.

My 2yo, 5yo and 7yo loved it as did all their cousins. I loved it. It will be our Christmas Eve movie this year. Along with a TV afternoon tea of smoked salmon, sandwiches, cheese and Christmas cakes (low maintenance/effort ahead of Christmas Day). We the have early baths and family games and carols before bedtime.

I know you didn't ask for all of that but this is now our Christmas Eve tradition.

What about Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas or The Snowman, or both if you think he will sit through them. We still watch them now and I have teenagers!

crazygracieuk · 13/11/2012 11:56

The Snowman is usually on TV on Christmas Eve and would be perfect for a 2 year old.

fuzzpig · 13/11/2012 11:58

We are going with The Christmas Toy for the DCs (it's a Jim Henson one I loved as a child, although I can't actually remember what happens in it Blush) and White Christmas for DH and I to watch after they're in bed.

We have been invited out for Xmas eve though so we will have to rethink when to watch them!

I've ordered Arthur Christmas from the library as we haven't seen it at the cinema.

DoubleMum · 13/11/2012 12:05

Arthur Christmas is fab. I also love Polar Express and the children love Elf.

My children still get a bit upset at the snowman when he melts but until that point it's magical for them.

AuntieShirley · 13/11/2012 12:07

We ALWAYS watch the same film on Christmas Eve. It is always Muppets Christmas Carol. Home Alone is watched several times in December too.

nipersvest · 13/11/2012 12:07

muppets christmas carol?

MrsBungleBear · 13/11/2012 12:10

I'll second Arthur Christmas. I took DD to the cinema to see it last year when she was 2.5. She loved it.

Bullets · 13/11/2012 15:53

Thanks for the suggestions! Just googled Arthur Christmas and looks like the one for us! Hopefully we can squeeze in The Snowman too if that's on tv anyway.

Nick thanks for traditions info - we're planning to have a carpet picnic for tea with lots of cheese and cake too!

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 13/11/2012 15:56

I will be watching Annabelles Wish this Christmas with my 3 year old. I love it

brighthair · 13/11/2012 15:57

Raymond Briggs Father Christmas. Used to watch it as a child every Christmas Eve and neither me or mum could remember what it was called. Dad tracked it down last year and I was in floods watching it Blush

piprabbit · 13/11/2012 16:01

Elf!

toomanyeasterbunnies · 13/11/2012 16:04

Another vote for "The Snowman" - simply lovely. I'm always in tears at the end though.

SecretSquirrel193 · 13/11/2012 16:05

I was coming to say Nightmare before Christmas until I saw he was only 2 Blush

amck5700 · 13/11/2012 16:10

I would say Elf and when a little older, Home Alone.

Badvocsanta · 13/11/2012 16:12

The gruffalo?
The gruffalos child?
The snowman?
Father Christmas?
Home alone?

DoubleMum · 13/11/2012 16:13

My children saw Home Alone for the first time this year. DS laughed so much he fell off the sofa.

badtasteflump · 13/11/2012 16:19

We watch films back to back Christmas Eve (annual slob-out day Smile). Always The Muppet Christmas Carol (I love the 'sleeps till Christmas' song). Elf & Polar Express are really good too, but better for older children.

Mousefunk · 13/11/2012 18:18

We watch pretty much every single Christmas film in the run up to the big day but The Polar Express is always reserved for Christmas Eve. Fantastic film, really beautifully made.

dementedma · 13/11/2012 18:21

The Snowman is lovely. We see it live at the theater whenever its on, even now the Dcs are grown up. We will be going again on Dec 23rd followed by a potter around the Christmas market.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/11/2012 18:24

I always watch The Snowman- it's on Channel 4 and it's compulsary Grin

My DC love Home Alone and Elf
