Best film for Christmas Eve?

DS is now 2 and we want to start putting in place some family traditions this Christmas - when he's still young enough not to remember any total disasters!

First up is a new DVD to watch together as a family on Christmas Eve - any suggestions??

My personal favourites are:

The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause 2
The Santa Clause 3

Will be watching Arthur Christmas this year though and I've now got a hankering for Home Alone.

Binfullofgibletsonthe26th · 13/11/2012 19:24

Get him straight onto Die Hard. Only kidding!

I agree the Snowman is magical, easy plot, very little dialogue to follow.

DS loved the Polar Express from 4, the men in it are a tad scarey for younger kids I think.

He adored Home Alone and Home Alone 2, from 5 years.

Last year he saw Jingle All the way and thought that was funny too. He's 7 now, and was creasing up at Mr Bean's Christmas on DVD on Sunday.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/11/2012 19:33

My personal favourites are Polar Express and Muppet Christmas Carol.

Not suitable for a 2 year old but such good films.

The littlest light on the Christmas tree is lovely for little ones & I think it's only about 30 mins

Another vote for The Snowman. Aren't they supposed to be releasing a follow up to The Snowman this year or did I imagine that?

4forkssake · 13/11/2012 20:04

Looks like they've remade it slightly rather than a new one. Hope they haven't spoilt the original.

I have just ordered a White Christmas from Amazon
Only £3

It has to be the Muppets Christmas carol. Can't beat it Grin

ChablisLover · 13/11/2012 20:11

Muppets Christmas carol and ds just this weekend has discovers elf

DilysPrice · 13/11/2012 20:14

I see someone's already suggested Die Hard. None more Christmassy Grin

Agree that Arthur Christmas v underrated film.

For a 2 year old I'd go for the original animated Grinch Who Stole Christmas - I read it to the DC each Christmas Eve.

Doitnicelyplease · 13/11/2012 20:17

I think we have all the main Christmas kids movies, a collection I add to each year, this year I have got Arthur Christmas, DD1 and DH already saw it in the cinema last year but I haven't yet.

For a two year old I would recommend something lovely and simple, Winnie the Pooh, a Very Merry Pooh Year is nice, last year DD1 (3 at the time) loved the short Ice-Age Christmas special. Also The Gruffalo and Gruffalo's child, but we watch those throughout the year.

Also there are some Thomas christmas specials which are nice if he is into trains.

DD1 also loves Rudolph the Rednose Raindeer, it is an old stop motion animation movie from the 60s - it is a classic here (in North America).

Also love Polar Express.

A Muppet's Christmas Carol is by far the best Christmas film. I watch it every Christmas Eve - and I am 30!

mummmsy · 13/11/2012 20:22

Ice Age Christmas. Great for a younger child who may not sit through a dull length film. Then you can put another film on afterwards for you! Grin

Snazzyfeelingfestive · 13/11/2012 20:28

FULL length not dull length Grin

We have The Snowman and Father Christmas as a boxset and they are lovely. Have ordered Elf for this year.

Although beware! DS watched The Snowman for the first time with me when he was 3yrs old and was loving it, right up to the end where the snowman melts, whereupon he burst into tears... Shock

CockBollocks · 13/11/2012 20:37

Arthur Christmas!!

CockBollocks · 13/11/2012 20:39

Although as he is 2 he might enjoy "Mickeys Twice Upon A Christmas" more.

Just watchh all of them Wink

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 13/11/2012 20:41

oh, definitely The Muppets' Christmas Carol.
although not a film, we also love The Box of Delights - amazingly festive

PandaWatch · 14/11/2012 14:18

What was that Dudley Moore film where he plays an elf? I remember loving it as a child!

Binfullofgibletsonthe26th · 14/11/2012 14:49

The Dudley Moore movie was called "Santa Claus" and at the time it came out there was a lot of controversy about it as it was believed that they killed several reindeer to skin them and cover the robotic reindeer they were using.

I remember the press making a huge deal. I was quite young at the time.

Then when you go to Lapland reindeer pelt is just a farming product, or bi-product, like leather.

halfthesize · 14/11/2012 14:53

I love The Snowman and so does DS2 who is 3, he also really loves a film called The Flight Before Christmas, very cute Grin

iseenodust · 14/11/2012 14:59

I can guarantee DS will want Rudolph and the island of misfit toys.

fuzzpig · 14/11/2012 15:04

I really liked the BBC one called Robbie the Reindeer. Ardal o'Hanlon is in it. Might have to find a DVD of it!
