Is 3 too old for duplo?

I am looking at the duplo hospital for ds (3.5), he'd like a hospital but the Lego one is much much too complicated. The Playmobil one is very expensive and has thousands of tiny pieces.

Is he too old for duplo? We have never had any before. He is not a massive fan of building stuff really, never liked mega bloks but thought he might like the hospital.

3 is a very good age for duplo. The Playmobil hospital is very fiddly, and frustrating for little fingers as things get knocked out of place really easily.

Duplo hospital looks fab.

I find the old duplo the best, the old houses with sliding door are rock solid double walled and much more sturdy than the new stuff.

I would reccomend big base plates, house and furniture, vehicles, farm, police station, lots of blocks.

I find that we can build anything with this combination.

My DCs love Duplo - they are 5 and 3.

I think my 5yo does play with proper Lego at school, but she isn't so good with fiddly things whereas my DS is a bit more patient.

I'm thinking next year I will give them Lego and sell the Duplo on eBay as I think they'll both be ready for it then. Probably at Xmas or maybe I'll start for their birthdays (June and August). I will also be getting the Lego Ideas Book for me them. I never had Lego as a child so it's very exciting :o

I'll definitely get a big set of basic bricks but does anyone have any recommendations for a good set to start them off with Lego?
