Is 3 too old for duplo?

I am looking at the duplo hospital for ds (3.5), he'd like a hospital but the Lego one is much much too complicated. The Playmobil one is very expensive and has thousands of tiny pieces.

Is he too old for duplo? We have never had any before. He is not a massive fan of building stuff really, never liked mega bloks but thought he might like the hospital.

We've got a few playmobil things really cheap on facebook selling pages. Ones like "buy sell and swap in Glasgow" or similar.

I got a huge box of vehicles for £20 and a police station with vehicles/helicopter for £25.

Yes tutu Smile are you?
The amazon one is fulfilled by someone else but I've bought stuff that way before and never had a problem. Seems more easy to get the hospital in France or Germany. I had a look at their amazon sites just for the reviews - I don't speak either language but they all gave five stars and said it was Bon or gut! Grin

Perfect I would say.

ImagineJL · 23/10/2012 22:20

My DSs are 3.5 and 7 and they both play with duplo a lot. DS1 also likes little Lego, but duplo has the advantage of being much bigger, so you can make bigger structures.

ICutMyFootOnOccamsRazor · 23/10/2012 22:27

Yes, I agree with Imagine. Ds is 4 and like to build vehicles out of lego but giant bridges and castles etc from duplo for his cars and animals to 'use'.

imperialstateknickers · 23/10/2012 22:30

I've watched two seven year olds, a ten year old and a twelve year old happily play with a crate of duplo for two hours.

izzywizzyisbizzy · 23/10/2012 22:32

Don't suppose anyone is interested in a boxed duplo castle with extra knights etc?

It's discontinued - DS begged for one and it took me 3 months to track one down £70.

Now he doesn't want it anymore (sob) and I have already got DD a princess one.

qo · 23/10/2012 22:35

oooh if you do get Duplo, use them as jelly moulds!

loubielou31 · 23/10/2012 22:36

We have the hospital up at the moment, it was a Christmas present last year. Both DDs (5 and 2) enjoy playing with Duplo, we have a fair few sets. The role play bit has a bigger draw than the building for my DCs.

acsec · 23/10/2012 22:37

I teach Reception and the 4 - 5yr olds still love it - if I didn't have to have a variety of construction toys throughout the week they'd choose Duplo every day!

PickledFanjoCat · 23/10/2012 22:40

£140!! I'd want a boob job in the hospital thrown in for that.. Grin

I've just bought a duplo farm for ds, who will be coming up to 2.

Might be a bit young but I'm desperate for him to like Lego. I bloody love it.

UniS · 23/10/2012 22:44

good age for duplo. Its good small world play props ( like play mobile but more flexible)

Boy is reluctantly passing in to his cousin now he is 6.5. But he is hanging on to the duplo train stuff, and the bits on his farm, and the construction vehicles.

AFingerofFudge · 23/10/2012 22:48

izzywizzy what does the castle look like?? potentially interested, how much would you want for it???

tutu100 · 23/10/2012 22:52

Yes I am a Garbage fan. I wanted to be Shirley when i was younger (and thinner!).

izzywizzyisbizzy · 23/10/2012 22:52

castle

It's this one - I am looking for the £70 I paid for it (I'll carry the postage cost) - I know if I hang onto it I'll get it one eBay at christmas because they are really hard to get hold off.

I know there are extras with it as well - if you were really interested I'll get it out and build it - but I know that pricey for a second hand anything so dw if it's too much for you.

tutu100 · 23/10/2012 22:53

Izzywizzy I would also be interested in the castle if afingeroffudge didn't want it.

izzywizzyisbizzy · 23/10/2012 22:56

Shall I build it and stick some photos on my profile tomorrow night?

Penny2012 · 23/10/2012 22:59

I love Duplo and I'm 31.

Babyrabbits · 24/10/2012 06:47

Penny the duplo in this house is always refered to by my DH as mummys duplo.

He rolls his eyes when i say the children need some more duplo :-) we have enough to fill three 75 litre tubs.

Loulousmummy · 24/10/2012 08:34

My 3 yo dd has just got into Duplo, bought it ages ago but she prefered the Megabloks she got for her 1st birthday but ignored until I decided she was too old for them and was going to get rid. I feel the next size up Lego is too small and dd will just get annoyed with it. Dd is 4 in March and we are getting her a big Duplo set for Christmas. My plan is she will stick with Duplo, miss out the next stage, the 4+ stuff and then go on to the teeny tiny stuff in a few years time.

Doitnicelyplease · 31/10/2012 21:05

We only started buying Duplo for DD last year at 3, she is now 4 and it is still played with everyday (before that we had megabloks which are imo rubbish).

I got a set of basic blocks second hand and a large base plate (a must) first then for last Christmas she got winnie the pooh tree house, I also found the zoo and polar zoo secondhand and got those.

She has plenty (it is all mixed together), so we are not going to add any more sets now and the storage tub is full.

I am probably going to hold off getting any proper lego until she is 5 or maybe even 6. Though I have been eyeing up the new Friends stuff tis very cute.

LynetteScavo · 31/10/2012 21:07

Mine have all played with Duplo, probably up to the age of 10, even though we have loads of Lego.

When going on holiday, it't the one thing I used to take, as I knew all DC would play with it.

xMinerva · 31/10/2012 21:23

My 3 year old won't play with duplo, it sits untouched while he pulls out the Lego which he loves.

The 2yr old doesn't play with the duplo either and would rather build with the Lego but I think that's just because he likes copying his brother.

HappyAsEyeAm · 31/10/2012 22:30

Get it! We have just bought more Duplo for Ds1 and he is nearly 5. far more imaginative with it than he could be with Lego, as its too intricate.

My recommendations:
A basic box that comes in a platic tub
The numbers set
A farm set

We have just bought the capital letters set, and I don't think it is as good. Basically because the letters are in capitals, and not all of the letetrs have a picture on them.

Rosevase · 31/10/2012 22:33

My 40 year old loves duplo Grin

We have tonnes of Lego too... But the duplo is loved and used daily. It's quicker to build imaginative creations with!
