Where can I get Christmas decorations that aren't just tree decorations?

I really struggle each year to find decorations that aren't (a) tree decorations or (b) ornaments.

I'd really like some nice decorations to hang to the ceiling (i.e. from one corner of the ceiling to the other) or something to wrap around the bannisters.

Our tree is done, but I want the rest of the house to look decorated too. At least the kitchen / diner and hallway.

Oh gawd, sorry no, I meant 'done' as in I know all the decs for it are up in the loft.

As if!! Blimey, I'm one of those run around at the last minute people. Look in the shops and find the dregs left. Each year I think I must get some nice decorations earlier!

Although the kids would be chuffed if it is done!

I get some things from pound land ie. stickers for the windows etc. you can also get those tinselly garlands for the ceiling (is that what you mean?) from pound land.

I saw John Lewis had some decorations in their christmas section - like garlands and things like that.

Robin - exactly, that's what I want to avoid! I really struggle to find non-tree decorations that aren't plastic red/gold shite (sorry if anyone really likes those!)

Love those RobinSparkles! Reminds me of my grandma's house. She had gorgeous decorations - much nicer than those really. Purples and gold and silver and made from quite stiff foil. I loved them. Although I was only about 6.

My decorations are much more tasteful these days!

Sheeplikessleep - there are lots around. Now is a good time to buy while there is choice. I love Xmas and have far too many decorations. I have lots of Father Christmas statues/figurines. I put them all together on a table in the hall.

Tesco have garlands you can put on your bannisters.

Some of the Christmas magazines have nice ideas. I think it was in the Ideal Homes one - lovely simple idea of hanging lengths of red ribbon from bannisters and hanging Xmas cards from the ribbon.

I always find lovely decs in garden centres!

Ikea have some nice bits in this year

Christmastimeuk.com has some very tasteful decorations both foil and paper varieties. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. Also i bought some paper decorations out of Marks and Spencers!! Not cheap but brilliant quality!

Oh God, my dh festoons our house with those shiny foil garlands and ceiling decorations every year

It's his only real failing and after 17 years together I've kind of got used to them now

My Dad does the same Doyouthinktheysaurus. And tinsel. We usually go to my parents for Xmas and end up helping dad with the tree etc. Every year I hide the tinsel and foil tat and every year he finds it all and puts it up!

At home this year so will all be tasteful tat!

You have to have tinsel everywhere (except the tree).

I used to hate all the bits dangling form the ceiling, I really did.

However, he's got into the habit of doing it when the dse and I are in bed or I'm at work (nights) and it kind of makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to come downstairs to rooms festooned like Santa's grotty grotto

His parents started it I think, they always did garlands. My parents appear to have attempted to embrace tasteful in their old age! When we were kids it was all multi coloured lights and tinsel a go go, now it's all minimalist tree, clear lights and no tinsel I secretly prefer the tacky look

DH used to beg me to get those shiny monstrosities garlands like the ones I linked to. I always refused but he would pout and say that it wasn't Christmas without them (PIL had them every year when he was little).

A couple of years ago I gave in. They don't look that bad! Hey, it's Christmas you have to embrace the tack! :o

Our front room always looks lovely at Christmas.

I bought a few of these from John Lewis last year. They're quite expensive (and you can get cheaper, similar ones in Ikea I think), but really sturdy considering they're essentially made of paper, and the bigger ones have got a little plastic fitting you can attach to make it into a lantern type thing.

I always get the dcs to make paper chains every year - keeps them occupied for a couple of hours, its cheap and it looks great! In fact we have paper chains everywhere, including the kitchen, hall, utility room, bathroom and of course the dcs bedrooms.

Then after Christmas I can use them for lighting the fire [hgrin]
