What do you do when you know the toy your DC is complete rubbish ?

All my DS (8) wants for Christmas is the Beyblade destroyer dome which looks compete rubbish - it's looks like a piece of cheap plastic and costs £39.99. !
I know he will only play with it a few times before discarding it, but he says he really really wants it.

Have anyone had a similar situation ?

I casually mentioned that it had terrible reviews on Amazon which did put her off

I've just emptied my loft of dozens of these toys and gadgets that over the year my dc have said they'll die if they dont get for Christmas etc. does include the infamous chocolate coin maker, various bath bomb/soap/perfume kits, bakugan, loads of hot wheel sets and much much more. All were used once and then put on the loft never to come out again.
A total waste of money but i always wanted to see their little faces light up when they opened them so always got suckered in, and yes I'd probably do it all over again even though I know they're rubbish.

Have you not noticed the number of grown adults on MN lamenting the year they didn't get a coveted Mr. Frosty?

That said, I have got some bakugan stuff for DS but I quite like it

This thread is hilarious- I didn't get mr frosty either! And my daughter will never get the chocolate maker!
She gets plenty other good stuff though so she is never disappointed.
Come to think of it, i never got the barbie house either .

Ah this is such a toughy! I generally try to put them off as much as possible. I know this sounds daft, but my ds tends to record cartoons he like and (taking after me here) he fast forwards the adverts- this has made a HUGE difference to the amount of trash he requests. Last year he was unsure what he wanted and so asked for a surprise! He got a goal post which he loved and because you can fold it down he even took it on holiday with us. This year he's probably getting a new scooter from Santa as his Ben 10 one is a bit small/ rusty/ babyish.

Ah no really, ds, dbro and my cousins all love their beyblades and went mad on discovering the dome. I thought it looked quite cool! But I've only seen the postage stamp sized pic in argos.

Ds1 hankered after the colossal for ages but always had something else he wanted more so I was saved spending ?50 on shite thankfully. It was half price on Tesco a whole back and I would have got it for him then but I had no cash that week.

I have no doubt as soon as he sees the dome he'll want it and I'll probably get it for him as I still feel pangs of guilt about the colossus!

Yes, dd wanted Baby Walk & Crawl which was heavily advertised last year. It looked rubbish to me and the reviews were bad, so I got her a much nicer Walk/Sit/Talk doll.

Top of this year's Christmas list: Baby Walk & Crawl!!!!! It's £10 more than last year too.

I bet we call all remember the one thing we asked for an either through cost or lack of stock never got. My brother and I asked for a post office set, don't ask!! We got a cheaper version of it and we always talk about it. Sometime we need to bite the bullet. Is it something someone else can buy him?

My DS 5 wanted a skateboard last year only thing he actually asked for - he does not want to play on it till he is 7 but wanted it this year. We had to buy him in cos he asked Santa and of course he said that it would be something he could get - ah!! Lucky got 1 for like £15 but it's still in the wrapper, but his face was worth the few pounds.

There's some fairly awful reviews TBF OP, but I reckon that's adults looking at it vs. through kids eyes and kids that like Beyblades.

This looks to be one of those sets that needs to be assembled BEFORE Christmas Day to ensure its properly constructed without reform and nerves on your part OP

I have experience of this.

Last Christmas DS (then just 3) saw an advert for HotWheels Criss Cross Crash and decided his life was not complete without it. I refused to buy it on principle; without the music, clever filming and slow-mo it is just overpriced plastic tat. I thought he'd just forget about it and move on. He hasn't. It's his birthday this week and he will finally be receiving it although I refused to pay full price and bought it boxed but used off eBay

Personally I never recovered from Father Christmas not bringing me my Toy Sweet Shop He will be delivering one to DS this year instead.

I had a mr frosty I can assure you it was shite, at 5yo I knew that. But I'm a great big sodding mug and rarely ignore the dcs requests, except the sodding coach style pram by baby annabel, £70, I think not small girl, you have no less that 5 toy prams/strollers already.

I also hankered after a Mr Frosty, and never got one...one year I expressed my upset and bitterness to a friend.
That year..I was 26..she presented me with a Mr frosty on Xmas Eve!
Chuffed to bits I was!!
We made Mr Fosty vodka drinks until the early hours. Unfortunately, I had to make lunch for all the family the next day, and didn't stop throwing up til late Xmas Day!!

I make subtle attempts to change their minds throughout October and November,
if that fails, and if it's under £20 or so, I get it anyway, and also get something else I think they'll like
if more than that, the elves have some difficulty sourcing the parts...

Charlotte that is my approach too. DS2 wants the Super Moshi HQ whick looks like a right heap of tat. I have got him a set of Super Moshi figures (which I know WILL survive/be played with) and if I can't persuade him off it will get the HQ in a 3 for 2 offer if possible and grit my teeth.
