Christmas Eve Hamper

I love the idea of the Christmas Eve hamper and have found lots of lovely ideas on mn of what to put in. The Q: do I make up one hamper for the family with individually wrapped and named items, or should each of us have our own little hamper - hamper is wrapped but presents inside are not. What does every body else do? What works best for your family? I'm thinking of the shared hamper as we'll have some shared gifts (the obligatory Christmas DVD etc). I'm overthinking this arn't I....Blush

I did much first one last year but only for DCs aged 6 & 13.

I just got 2 of everything and they rifled through it together and shard it out.

I didn't wrap any of it except their new Pjs.

They loved it by the way!

BeaWheesht · 02/09/2012 12:49

I just do one for the kids - they were 5 and 1 last year but will get same this year - box/tub with following in it...

PJs
Xmassy DVD
Xmassy book
Xmassy activity book if can find one
Popcorn
Sweetie
Xmas tree decoration each
Note from Santa saying go to bed on time and leave a carrot and whisky please.

VoldemortsNipple · 02/09/2012 15:21

I did one each for the dcs. I don't wrap things up just put them all in a large gift bag.

They had, pjs, slipper socks, lush bath bomb, microwave popcorn and a retro popcorn tub, a fizzy drink. I put the DVD inside one of the bags and explained it was for everybody. Youngest was 9 so it wasn't a problem.

I gave them our at about 5pm so they had time for baths before watching the movie.

Silly question,if doing it for a few people, where do u buy the hampers without breaking the bank?

thesoo · 02/09/2012 16:34

I put mine in Ikea round red wastepaper bins and wrap around christmassy clear wrap, the stuff you get bouquets of flowers in, then tie with a bow, looks smashing. The bins cost a couple of pounds each...

sunnyday123 · 02/09/2012 19:41

I got an empty box from the local supermarket and wrapped it in Xmas paper all around!

I put stuff in for all of us-

Pjs for kids
Bath bomb each
Popcorn
Xmas movie
Treats inc hot choc for kids
Wine for me & dh
Treats for me & dh
Xmas story

seabuckthorn · 02/09/2012 20:57

Beawhesht Usborne do a Christmas activity book? Have just ordered one for my 2.

everydayaschoolday · 02/09/2012 21:50

Thank you everyone for sharing your ideas and traditions. Ok I think I'm going with a shared hamper, wrapping the outside (cellophane (depending on cost) or in christmas paper).

Ds got one last year..

Pjs, new bedding, toothbrush chocolate, and a christmas story.

Our elf left it Wink

I may have to have word with said elf because dh and i quite fancy something Grin

BonkeyMollocks · 02/09/2012 21:53

Oh and I don't wrap, just gets put in a basket.

OhTheConfusion · 02/09/2012 22:03

We do a family one, the only thing I wrap is everyones festive pj's.

Our hamper includes: Festive pj's for all, wine for us, hot choc and christmas marshmallows (m&s do them) for the dc's, a christmas film (thinking Arthur Christmas this year) and gingerbread men :)

We go out for early dinner on christmas eve and when we arrive home the basket is always filled and sitting by the fire... magic Wink

OhTheConfusion · 02/09/2012 22:05

P.s, we no longer add a festive book as the DC's have adopted 'stick man' as the family's traditional xmas eve story.

BonkeyMollocks · 02/09/2012 22:06

Should say Elfy doesn't wrap it!

Hmm
OvO · 02/09/2012 23:14

I do a shared one for my boys (7 and 4). There's lots of things that I get them one each of but some stuff to share. I wrap most of it as it then takes twice as long to open and extends the fun.

buzzgirly · 03/09/2012 08:02

I just started doing this last year for dd, I put it all in an old embroidered stocking her great granny had made her. I will be doing one for dd and ds this year, I think I wil out them in Xmas gift bags. I will be putting in new pjs, bubble bath, toothbrushes, expanding flannels, chocolate coins/Santa, new mug for hot chocolate and maybe DVD. I won't wrap any of it as I don't want it to be confused with Xmas morning iykwim?

TerraNotSoFirma · 03/09/2012 08:11

I use an old fashioned wicker picnic basket, Avery(our elf on the shelf) leaves the hamper while we are out for a Christmas eve walk.

It will have pj's for all of us, Christmas bubble bath, DVD and some festive nibbles. And instructions for the children on how to follow Santa on NORAD.

Can't wait.

OrangeOsc · 03/09/2012 09:06

I did this last year. I used a box from the supermarket which I wrapped in christmas paper. Inside I put christmas PJs for us all (christmas boxers for DH as he doesn't wear PJs Grin), wine for us, a hot chocolate sachet in a christmassy mug for DSD, (DS was only drinking milk then so no special drink for him!) a DVD to share, a christmas book each and a personalised bauble each for the tree. Going to give them a bauble each year, so when they leave home they have a collection of them for their own trees (an idea I pinched from mumsnet!) .

I didn't give them on Christmas eve, I did them the day we put up our tree. I took DSD and DS out in the morning to see FC in his grotto, and when we came home DH an elf had left the box in the hallway. That was they got to wear their Christmas PJs for the whole Christmas period Grin

OrangeOsc · 03/09/2012 09:08

That way they got to..... not was! Blush

curiousgeorgie · 03/09/2012 09:21

I love this idea... Do you think 2.2 is too young to do it?

heavyheartedfarted · 03/09/2012 14:53

I started doing this a couple of years ago after reading about it on here, its a lovely idea and my children love it.I wrap a box in xmas paper then just place all the items in there unwrapped,my dc are 3,6,13,14 they get christmas pjs each(shorts for the eldest ds) tin of biscuits, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and a christmas dvd and book to read to them when putting to bed.
We go to church about 4pm and come back to find it under the tree in the youngest dc room, the younger 2 dc are then very keen to get bathed into their new pjs and settled down watching dvd.The dc love it and i wish i had done it earlier.

Anyone done a more «ahem» grown up one? DH and I go to my family's for Christmas Day but he flies to NZ on Boxing Day for 16days, so Christmas Eve will be our alone time. DD will be 1yo but is an early-to-bed one.

fuzzpig · 10/09/2012 19:43

We are doing a shared hamper. Previously we have just done jammies and a tree decoration each, last year we also had a Night Before Christmas book.

This year we are going to do an Xmas DVD (I got one called the Christmas Toy, it's an old Jim Henson one I loved as a child! Can't wait to see it again!) but I might get one for DH and I as well (probably White Christmas) so we can watch it later that night.

Also going to do snowman soup as I've seen it mentioned on here :)

fuzzpig · 10/09/2012 19:45

Oh and I might get jammies for me and DH too (he doesn't normally wear any but does like the loose trousers so I could get some funky ones)

Gold I think a grown up hamper would be fabulous :o Lush do an edible massage bar apparently? I want one for DH's stocking.

everydayaschoolday · 10/09/2012 22:07

fuzzpig is snowman soup just hot chocolate with marshmallows on top? And possible stirring candy cane? Or is it a white drink - warm milky vanilla? I've seen it mentioned a few times and I want to join in too!
