Not a material thing.

Lovely blanket and hot water bottle from DM
Lush goodies from DPIL
tacky phone cover from DCs
a cuddly pigeon and....................................... and engagement ring! from DP(we have been talking weddings for ages:venues, when etc but there has been no talk of rings and he always said Christmas proposals are rubbish). The ring is really old and lovely but it doesn't fit and the jewellers don't think it can be enlarged but have sent it away to see Sad

So. After reading this thread; what do you think?

Is Christmas a spendathon, a festival of splurging and boosting John Lewis's accounts sheets...or what is it?

For me it's a pretty obscene display of spending - and for the sake of what.

Fun? I live overseas but when I arrived back in the UK in December all I could see and hear were people being absolutely manic in the shops trying to buy presents for people (who I'm sure didn't need them)

Why not give a present to a friend or a family member on a day when they would not expect one. I'd much rather someone picked me a daisy on any day of the year rather than a rose on xmas day.

Look at the thread above and tell me if that is what December 25th is about.

DingDongDialsMavislyOnHigh · 29/12/2011 19:27

Biscuit but homemade and pious not a consumerist and delicious Biscuit

DingDongDialsMavislyOnHigh · 29/12/2011 19:33

I spent £10 each on adults in my family, £5 on child relatives, got DP some clothes he desperately needed but he wouldn't spend £ on. Bought the DC presents for the garden in the summer that we would buy later on anyway IYSWIM and my engagement ring cost not very much at all from Ebay so off your high horse Pippa Hmm

TheFallenMadonna · 29/12/2011 19:39

Excellent!

Do you not do Christmas at all then? Or just not the presents?

DingDongDialsMavislyOnHigh · 29/12/2011 19:41

Agghhh wish I hadn't justified myself now..... I spent that much because it was all I could afford this year. I can't wait until I earn enough to spoil all of my loved ones rotten

TheFallenMadonna · 29/12/2011 19:49

That wasn't to you Mavis. It was to Pipa.

DingDongDialsMavislyOnHigh · 29/12/2011 19:57

Ha no I didn't see your post Mads! Smile

PipaLockstocking · 29/12/2011 20:00

Madonna, I love giving presents - but not on a day when I'm told to. I buy things for people when I see something that inspires me to do so, whatever time of month or year that is. I don't understand why adults feel the need to go over the top on one day in December. It surely is only for children.
