Tonight I opened my money tin...

I've been saving £2 coins in a money tin (the kind you have to use a tin opener so no cheating!)

The idea is- the money is split so the DCs can buy DH and I a nice present and have some left over for themselves.

There was exactly £200 in there.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

So DH and I are going to have £70 each, and the DCs £30 each (they'll but X-Box games and Sylvanian Family)

For me- Philosophy stuff.

Will definately do this next year.

Xmas Grin well done! I have three of those, none with any money in I'm too tight to waste the cost of the tin when the time comes

I do have a terramundi pot (ceramic version of above) that should have a fair amount in - I know it has notes in it, I've had it for years, before I had DP and DD and actually had some money.

See last strike through as to why I havn't opened it Xmas Grin

belledechocchipcookie · 16/12/2011 00:27

Wow, well done! Xmas Grin I may have to do one of those.

LordOfTheFlies · 16/12/2011 00:37

I got my tin for £1 from The Range.

I did have a jar but when I got to £70 ish I had to get a tin in case I dipped in! (I have no self control IRL) Xmas Blush

Well done!

I've seen those tins in the shops. Some have pictures of banknotes on the outside don't they? I've looked at them and thought they were useless because you had to break them to open them. I tend to think of money boxes as pots to keep loose change in and to raid frequently. I also have no self control.

But the point of these is that you cannot just keep dipping your hand in them, isn't it?! As you have demonstrated so well. [lightbulb moment emoticon :o]

pengymum · 16/12/2011 01:12

if by Philosophy stuff you mean the stuff in Boots - they have a great offer on at the moment - Get £10 of Boots points for a £14 spend and 3 for 2! Linl below to thread on MSE about it:

This is fab! I think I will also do it for next year. I also have no self control Xmas Blush so that sounds good to me.

Sparklingbaubles · 16/12/2011 06:51

I want one of those tins. If there's any money in the house I nick it for the window cleaner/car parking/dinner money and there's never any left. Well done Lord.

ElectricSoftParade · 16/12/2011 07:11

I was given one of those tins for a mother's day gift and just started to put £1 and £2 coins in. When I opened it there was £160+ in it!

Excellent way of saving a bit of money if you are a dipper with normal money boxes like me.

Enjoy your presents OP!

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 16/12/2011 07:23

That is fantastic, well done!

We just introduced a penny pot to DD a while ago, she's desperate for a really tacky doll in The Works for £2.99, and probably has enough now.

DH and I should probably do something similar!

£200, wow :)

Slightlytinsellyexpat · 16/12/2011 07:24

Wow, Electric! Now there are two of you, you with £160 and the OP with £200. I must do this next year. Really must.

LoveInAColdClimate · 16/12/2011 07:28

Oooh, you have inspired me! I will do this for next Christmas. Well done for saving so much!

mumatron · 16/12/2011 07:47

We have one of these as do all 3 dc. What ever money they get for xmas or birthdays goes in (unless there is something they really want) and they open it once a year. Usually when we go on holiday. Ds is 11 and he has 2 pots. One is his savings for his first car. He has about £70 in there.

probably shouldn't say this, but it is very easy to get money out of these with a pair of tweezers, especially notes

Each child has a 5p money box. they have been on the go for nearly 10 years, each one has been emptied many times, and 5p's put in a bucket. We have several hundred pounds worth! might do a charity guess the 5p thing at the next school fair, not sure though.

Tonksforthememories · 16/12/2011 09:26

We have several money boxes in the lounge, Coppers, 5p, and silvers. The silver one gets raided for dinner money occasionally, but we have a haul of about £30 every couple of months!

HerbWoman · 16/12/2011 13:56

oreo I hope you've not had it too many years or you might find some of the notes are no longer accepted currency!

RetroMuff · 16/12/2011 14:16

oreo I managed to make a hole in the bottom of my terramundi pot just big enough to get the money out. I've taped over it and am re-using it - I know you're supposed to smash it but it's too pretty.

oreocrumbs · 16/12/2011 14:42

HerbWoman I've lived with DP for 5 years so its older than that, I too hope the notes havn't changed but realistically think they probably have theres at least 2 £10 notes in there.

RetroMuff How did you do that? Did you drill it? I had thought of 'chipping' the bottom with a hammer and chisel, but I may lose a finger Xmas Grin

I am inspired to use my tin ones now, DD has a mickey mouse one, and I have a giant one which DB says will hold £500 in £1 coins and a normal one. Think I'll start with the small one Xmas Grin

PiratecatClaus · 16/12/2011 14:48

well don. i had no idea such a tin existed!

i will do one for next year, as i am quite hopeless and my spare couple of quid parking money in the car rarely survives a week.

marmiteandjam · 16/12/2011 15:01

I have one of those that you open with a can opener. I save £2 coins plus £20 per month. I always open it on December the 1st and go to the bank to use the coin counting machine (I love it, I'm such a big kid). This year I had just under £400 Grin. I then go and buy another tin and start all over again.

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 16/12/2011 16:06

I had one of these for Christmas. I put 1 or 2 pounds in every time I thought about it, but rarely, just so I had a little bit of emergency money at Christmas. There was 35 quid in it :o Chuffed!

DelGirlsRingAreYouListening · 16/12/2011 16:18

ooh I might look out for those, hopeless dipper here Smile. Whereabouts other than the range?

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 16/12/2011 16:19

I got mine in a local joke, gift, bits and bobs shop for £2

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 16/12/2011 18:48

I have told DH about the idea and we are unashamedly stealing it for next year! Thanks OP :o

RetroMuff · 16/12/2011 19:55

oreo I poked a hole with a hammer and a bradawl in the middle of the base - it's quite thin there and the pottery is soft, so I had to do it gently. Once I had a small hole, I just gradually made it bigger.

I found my 'wish' inside - it was to save enough money to buy a new car. Hah! There was £140 in it. Nice though Xmas Grin

oreocrumbs · 16/12/2011 20:00

OOh I will try that thanks RetroMuff Xmas Smile

DelGirls TK Maxx sell them, and I got mine from Home Bargains and DB bought the big one for me from B+M, the small ones we about 60p and the big one was £1.80 Xmas Smile
