I've been saving £2 coins in a money tin (the kind you have to use a tin opener so no cheating!)

The idea is- the money is split so the DCs can buy DH and I a nice present and have some left over for themselves.

There was exactly £200 in there.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

So DH and I are going to have £70 each, and the DCs £30 each (they'll but X-Box games and Sylvanian Family)

For me- Philosophy stuff.

Will definately do this next year.

Quid shops quite often sell the tins you have to open with a tin opener. We have a big one on the go for wedding savings, any random spare change goes in it. Am not allowed to open it even though I'm bursting to know what's there to get us going with planning

Xmas Blush - I was quite in awe of a mumsnetter usuing her Christmas savings to buy philosophy books Xmas Grin.

I was looking at these tins in Home Bargains this afternoon. Thanks, definitely been inspired to buy one and get putting those odd pound coins in to save for next Christmas!!

KinkyDoritoWithFairyLightsOn · 17/12/2011 06:38

I already started a tin for next Christmas.

And I already raided it Xmas Blush.

I need a sealed one too, I think.

MudAndGlitter · 17/12/2011 06:39

I just brought a tin I can't raid Blush

We have a sealed charity box from church that we put change into.

It wasn't emptied for years and was nearly full, when the lady finally came and emptied it there was over £180.

We actually felt a bit sick as we could so have used that money!

Home Bargains had the tins today, I think they were 59p each and had pictures of bank notes and coins on.

Well done for saving so much - hope you enjoy spending it.

I have a terramundi pot that I got two years ago. Would like to get into it without smashing it (is nearly full) so may try Retromuff's method some time.

Not Philosophy books Ragwort -Philosophy skincare. Xmas Grin

Decided on some micro-delivery wash and see what else catches my eye.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/12/2011 21:46

oo well done.

Last year - for about 1/2 the year I saved up all my coins 20p and under and put them in a huge empty vodka bottle - I had £60............this year I've been REALLY good and not raided it once and done it the whole year..............we empty it in a fortnight................I don't think we'll have £200 in there though Xmas Grin

Dan01203 · 01/01/2018 14:11

I have just opened my 2 £50 Tins. The big one. I have been saving for a year. And I was astonished there was £2980 ish in there.

QuimJongUn · 03/01/2018 16:45

We save £1 coins in one jar and all the loose change in my purse (silver and coppers) at the end of each day in another. This year both together came to £553! We aim to beat the previous year's total every year but that'll take some doing Xmas Grin

We save 'properly' elsewhere too for presents, food etc - the coin jars are just extra for treats and so on. We had a lot of treats this year!

Saladtongs · 04/01/2018 09:43

I got mine in the pound shop for a......£! We are saving our £2 coins to put towards s holiday. It's half full atm & even the kids get excited when I get a £2 coin because they'll put it straight in the tin. They absolutely won't allow us to spend it, it's a good way to teach them about saving.

Saladtongs · 04/01/2018 09:47

I hate to put a dampner on things but those of you who've been saving £1 coins for a year, did you bank the coins in before the new pound coins became legal?

QuimJongUn · 04/01/2018 16:24

@Saladtongs I saved the old coins in a separate jar last year and banked them all the week before they stopped being legal tender. I did find a rogue one in the 'new' pound coin jar - I've kept it as a souvenir!

Saladtongs · 04/01/2018 16:33

@QuimJongUn thank goodness for that. I'd have been utterly heartbroken if I'd forgotten to bank it in before it became invalid currency.
