What about a tirimisu instead of a trifle?

noddyholder · 13/12/2011 08:36

I like tiramisu but has to be trifle. I could do my usual and add more alcohol but feel like a change!

Nigella does a nice lemon and raspberry trifle that I make as a change.

bigTillyMincepie · 13/12/2011 08:39

I have been browsing lots of old trifle recipes and my current fav is amaretto and chocolate, though the amaretto and raspberry looks good tooWink

Catsmamma · 13/12/2011 08:41

I always do a layer of amaretti biscuits in mine

so, sherry soaked cake, rasp jam, and rasps, layer of crushed amaretti, more sherry would not want it to be dry custard which, by the way I made from scratch and then lightly whipped cream on the top

apols for the Friends quote in the middle! ;)

I recently made http://www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/r/raspberry_and_limoncello_trifle.html this one but although it was different it wasn't fabulous, but it might be more your thing :D

Catsmamma · 13/12/2011 08:42

hmmm why did the link not work??

Raspberry and Limoncello Trifle

noddyholder · 13/12/2011 08:44

These sound great. How do you make it chocolatey is it the custard?

The best one I have had was my sister's cherry trifle. It uses panettone with black cherries in it, a jar of cherries in kirsch, some cherry compote, then custard with a dash of marsala in it, and some fresh cherries to decorate.

4ForksSake · 13/12/2011 10:01

There's a Chocolate & Cherry one in the current asda magazine if you can get hold of one. If not I can post the recipe. Looks nice.

bigTillyMincepie · 13/12/2011 10:24

Norman! Did you see yjix thread? Xmas Grin

Yes, you put dark chocolate into the custard and let it melt in.

noddyholder · 13/12/2011 10:36

What alcohol with the choc and cherry one?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 13/12/2011 10:37

Kirsch? Or maybe too sickly?

I have an order for 'granny's trifle' which means tradtional soaked sponge fingers, fruit / jam ( although I am going to add mulled wine jelly to this that I've just bought in M&S in a bottle). They key is making the custard with evaporated milk - makes it really creamy in a retro way!

noddyholder · 13/12/2011 13:34

I like the sound of mulled wine jelly!

notjustmewithballson · 13/12/2011 16:23

I do an equivalent of the Jamie Oliver family trifle - it's got chopped up swiss roll instead of sponge fingers, copious amounts of fruit, at least two layers of jelly (and blancmange and custard and cream) and it ends up being about 8 inches tall Grin

A bit like this but betterrrr... here

thousandDenierStocking · 13/12/2011 16:28

oh GOD how I love trifle.

this drambuie and raspberry one is amazebags

EatMeDates · 13/12/2011 18:45

The Phil Vickery white choc and orange ne is lovely. You wouldnt think those ingredients go together, but they work very well. Will try to dig out recipe for you later.

This chocolate gingerbread one is good, too.

I am going to make Lorraine Pasquale's one for Boxing Day this year, I think

BBC Food website also has recipes for a plum and ginger trifle and a mulled fruit trifle which both look good.

Catsmamma · 13/12/2011 18:48

please repost the gingerbread trifle link....it doesn't work!

moaninlisa · 13/12/2011 19:33

Traditional Scotch trifle.
Layer of sponge fingers or trifle sponges
Soak in sherry
Add layer of raspberries
Add jelly
Thick layer of custard
Chill overnight
Fresh cream to top dust with flaked almonds
Simples......

coldcomfortHeart · 13/12/2011 19:56

thousandDenierStocking that looks incredible, thanks for the link, going to make it for christmas eve. I've done Nigella's cherry one from Domestic Goddess before and while delicious, the custard never seems to set so it's always a bit... floaty. I like the certainty of a baked custard!

4ForksSake · 13/12/2011 20:01

Have mislaid the asda magazine Hmm but when I find it, I'll let you know what alcohol. Kirsch sounds good though although too much might be too sickly.
