Which is the best Christmas film for a 5 year old to watch on Christmas Eve?

Have decided it would be lovely to spend some time on Christmas Eve having a nap snuggled up with the DC watching a Christmas film in the afternoon.

DS2 will wander off and go and do his own thing but DS1 would love to watch a Christmas film.

Am rubbish with film names but am thinking either the one with Dudley Moore (my personal fave) or the one with Tim Allen. Which do you think would be good for a 5 year old or are there any others that are good Smile

ceebeegeebies · 05/12/2011 19:59

Thank you - will look out for that one on Sky to record Smile

Am a bit out of touch with Christmas films so any newish ones have passed over my radar Grin

Polar Express is fantastic!

Raggydoll · 05/12/2011 20:01

Polar express is the fave for Christmas eve but other good ones are; deck the halls, home alone, mickeys once upon a Christmas, lady and the tramp and dh has suggested die hard Hmm

MrsCog · 05/12/2011 20:01

Santa Claus the Movie? The Snowman? We used to always watch The Snowman before going to the crib service :)

Grockle · 05/12/2011 20:02

Home alone!

ceebeegeebies · 05/12/2011 20:03

Not sure that Die Hard is quite what I have in mind Wink

I remember watching Home Alone last year but to be honest, I think DS1 got quite emotional about this little boy being left at home by himself - not what I really want on Christmas Eve!

Polar Express

omydarlin · 05/12/2011 20:12

I have to say I do not like Polar Express- not a fan of Tom Hanks anyway and just find it all a bit too worry and not cheerful enough (dodges flying baubles being thrown at her)

Sorry Xmas Blush

omydarlin · 05/12/2011 20:12

too worrying

SnowPlaceLikeHome · 05/12/2011 20:13

The Snowman

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/12/2011 20:14

Helloooo!! My first post in about 2 years.

We have Polar Express, you are welcome to borrow it, ask our mutual friend for my phone number and pop round Smile

balia · 05/12/2011 20:15

Agree with omydarlin - Polar Express has some quite frightening/creepy bits in (but DS is only 4) I like traditional stuff - Muppet Christmas Carol!

monstermissy · 05/12/2011 20:27

we have watched polar express tonight and my ds4 sat glued to it till the last ten minutes when he started to drift. My favourite is santa claus the movie. Home Alone is a must i think for us this year at some point.

WanderingSheep · 05/12/2011 20:34

Miracle on 34th street
Home Alone (I think I like Home Alone 2 better than Home Alone)
Santa Claus The Movie
The Santa Clause
Jingle All The Way
The Snowman
Christmas with the Kranks

ELF!!!! Can't believe no-one has mentioned it already. Ds is almost 5 he loves this film and has done since he was 3.

ceebeegeebies · 05/12/2011 20:41

Thanks for all the suggestions so far Smile So many to choose from!!

Had completely forgotten about Miracle on 34th Street but I love that film! Also, DS1 is showing some interest in the Muppets at the moment so Muppets Christmas Carol may be a good option.

Flibberty thanks for the offer about Polar Express - if I need it, I will get in touch. Hope you are all well Smile

Gremlins.

piprobincomesbobbobbobbinalong · 05/12/2011 20:59

So glad that leftmymistletoe has already mentioned Elf. It's great and perfect for younger ones who might struggle to follow a whole film.

hohohoshedittant · 05/12/2011 21:01

Arthur Christmas is lovely if you fancy the cinema

Raymond Briggs Father Christmas is great. The DC's (ages 4,5,6) are highly amused at seeing Santa's arse.

The Snowman

If he still believes in Santa I'd avoid Santa Clause and Miracle on 34th Street as they raise doubts that don't need to be raised yet.

ceebeegeebies · 05/12/2011 21:14

Yes, he still believes in Father Christmas Grin Is Polar Express ok for not raising issues?? I really want something which captures the magic of Christmas for a 5 year old iyswim? Will look into Elf...

We went to see Arthur Christmas last week.

there will be lots on tv on xmas eve for your 5yr old, i normally just wait and see and then watch what we fancy most. but for a 5 yr old - the snowman. short and fantastic. room needs to be quiet though and telly quite loud. its all in the music!
polar express is brill too. my 3 and half yr old girl sat through it on friday night there. maybe a bit too long though for me on xmas eve, lots of preparing to do.

LordOfTheFlies · 05/12/2011 22:18

YY to Polar Express
YY The Snowman-essential

My DC love Home Alone but they are 12 and 9.6 -I've not seen it.

I've got Box of Delights somewhere to watch (don't know what it's about but I'm sure someone on here has watched it)

------------------

BTW will Arthur Christmas be in cinemas till Christmas itself. I'm planning to go with DCs on 24th.
It came out very early (Nov)

Thank you so much for this thread! What great suggestions. I can't wait to watch DS (also 5) fall about with laughter over Home Alone!
