What's your favourite bit of Christmas dinner?

I prefer all the trimmings rather than the turkey and my favourite bit of Christmas dinner is carrot and swede and sausages wrapped in bacon.

I've never cooked a Christmas dinner before, we nearly always go to my mum's but this year I am hosting and wondering which bits everyone likes and which bits people aren't that bothered about.

There was one year that the carrot and swede was accidentally left off the menu and, despite it being 7 years ago, I still shudder at the memory of Christmas dinner without it.

I know there are lots of people who think it's just the same as a Sunday roast but we rarely have a roast on a Sunday so I'm a bit of a novice!

So, what are your must-haves on your Christmas dinner plate and which things would happily do without?

Stuffing is a must! And lots of roasties
And I love brandy butter with my pudding!

GloriaTheHighlyFlavouredLady · 29/11/2011 17:41

Bread sauce

5inthebed · 29/11/2011 17:42

My favourite bit at the time is the sprouts. Yum!

My utmost favourite bit about christmas dinner is the sandwich I have for supper. I dip one side of each slice of bread in the gravy, then put turkey, stuffing and sprouts in. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Get0rf · 29/11/2011 17:43

The swede. With tonnes of butter and black pepper.

Or the red cabbage.

Actually the stuffing. I always make double so I can eat the leftovers standing at the fridge for days on end.

I very rarely cook a sunday roast, so I really savour all of it, really. It is the best meal of the year.

Pascha · 29/11/2011 17:43

Roast potatoes. Everything else is superfluous.

PastGrace · 29/11/2011 17:44

Second vote for bread sauce.

Roast potatoes, parnsips, cranberry sauce and stuffing come a very close second. Cold roast potatoes are amazing.

I've never been as fussed about bacon/little sausages/bacon and sausages - I'll eat them if someone makes them, but I wouldn't bother if I were cooking

Get0rf · 29/11/2011 17:44

Or the bubble and squeak on boxing day.

Pinner35 · 29/11/2011 17:45

Def the roasties and it just wouldnt be the same without those bacony sausage things....yum yum.

WowOoo · 29/11/2011 17:50

All of it? Probably the potatoes or stuffing. And the fact that we are all a bit squiffy when we eat it.

Yorkshire puds are the best bit of a Sunday roast for me. If I'm cooking, I have some on Christmas day also.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 29/11/2011 17:50

Crispy fluffy roasties, sausages in bacon, gravy and stuffing. Forget the rest! :o

mogs0 · 29/11/2011 17:52

Oh yes, stuffing! My contribution to last year's Christmas dinner was sausagemeat stuffing - it was really good.

5inthebed - that sandwich sounds yummy! I love turkey, stuffing and cranberry jelly sandwiches but usually get Hmm looks from my family for two reasons 1) the combination and 2) the fact that I can eat anything at all after the size of the meal we've not long eaten Blush.

Actually the one thing I could do without on christmas day is the turkey.

A dinner consisting of roast potatoes, parnsips, swede, stuffing, red cabbage, sprouts, pigs in blankets and gravy would be perfect.

MrsChristmasDB · 29/11/2011 17:55

All of it !

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 29/11/2011 17:56

bread sauce
roasties
sprouts with salt and butter mmmmmmmmmmmm

CrosswordAddict · 29/11/2011 17:59

Bread sauce I could live on the stuff

culturevulture · 29/11/2011 18:00

bread sauce, stuffing, brandy butter

BornToBeRiled · 29/11/2011 18:01

The best bit is when lots of different bits get smushed together! Now I think about it I wouldn't miss turkey either. A nice ham though! Anyone have cauliflower cheese with theirs?

GoEasyPudding · 29/11/2011 18:02

So happy to see some other bread sauce fans out there!

BREAD SAUCE!!!! yum and double yum!

Get0rf · 29/11/2011 18:03

I would LOVE cauli cheese with my roast dinner, but I just about manage to cook all the rest of it, and the cauliflower cheese wouldn't fit in the oven.

We have carrots as well (missed that out above) - we do have an overdose of root vegetables for some reason, but I love 'em.

SantasENormaSnob · 29/11/2011 18:04

The wine.

nbee84 · 29/11/2011 18:05

The stuffing - and I don't mean your normal paxo. I like chestnut stuffing and sausagemeat stuffing and often do both.

2nd has to be a good homemade gravy - the last couple of years I have made Jamie's gravy. A bit of a faff but as you can do it ahead of time it actually saves you time on Christmas Day.

ShowOfHands · 29/11/2011 18:06

Since having ds 12 weeks ago I haven't eaten cakes, biscuits, sweets, chocolate, pudding etc in an effort to lose weight and dear God am I looking forward to the Christmas pudding, though I'm still undecided between custard and cream.

Parsnips and sprouts otherwise.

And all of it really.

miaowmix · 29/11/2011 18:09

Turkey, stuffing and bread sauce, plus brussel sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts, wine and a cracker.
Carbs and all the rest I could live without. And NO cranberry sauce please.

Becaroooo · 29/11/2011 18:09

Roast parsnips
Brussels
Roast potatoes
yorkshires......yum yum

Moln · 29/11/2011 18:12

chestnut stuffing, sausages wrapped in bacon, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, sprouts, red cabbage, gravy.

All polished off with a selection of cheeses and crackers and wine.

Not sure i could choose one thing. Cruel thing to ask [wink

we have capon chicken instead of turkey (dh doesn't like turkey)
