What's your favourite bit of Christmas dinner?

I prefer all the trimmings rather than the turkey and my favourite bit of Christmas dinner is carrot and swede and sausages wrapped in bacon.

I've never cooked a Christmas dinner before, we nearly always go to my mum's but this year I am hosting and wondering which bits everyone likes and which bits people aren't that bothered about.

There was one year that the carrot and swede was accidentally left off the menu and, despite it being 7 years ago, I still shudder at the memory of Christmas dinner without it.

I know there are lots of people who think it's just the same as a Sunday roast but we rarely have a roast on a Sunday so I'm a bit of a novice!

So, what are your must-haves on your Christmas dinner plate and which things would happily do without?

That should of course say Christmas!!

CheerfulYank · 22/12/2011 17:32

I am not doing a huge dinner this year.

A naice ham, some veggies in balsamic and olive oil, and some creamy/herby potato things. I may do a dessert too.

I am looking forward to it all! :)

Proper homemede mulled vine!

wahwahwah · 22/12/2011 17:52

Christmas pud and seeing who finds the charm (and hopefully not swallowing it)

vesela · 22/12/2011 18:34

Bread sauce. I make it the same way as Smallstuff's, but I stir a bit of butter in at the end.

I love Christmas pudding, but don't like rich fruit cake much (or mince pies, come to that) so I make a Dundee cake. I'm still trying to work out why I like Christmas pudding and not rich fruit cake - currants are better hot? the suet makes a difference? No idea.

Labradorlover · 22/12/2011 18:57

Kilted sausages.

LaFilleSurLePont · 22/12/2011 20:07

The vegetables, with the exception of sprouts.

Dauphinoise potatoes and boiled potatoes with herb butter.I don't really 'get' the appeal of roast potatoes, unless they're roasted baby potatoes.

Pate or scallops to start.

Chipolatas.

LaFilleSurLePont · 22/12/2011 20:09

I've never tried bread sauce. Judging by the description I'll be in no hurry to do so.

suzikettles · 22/12/2011 20:13

Oh bread sauce is gorgeous. Creamy, savoury with a hint of nutmeg.

mmmmmm

LaFilleSurLePont · 22/12/2011 20:20

Mmmm. Clove flavoured baby vomit.Grin

LaFilleSurLePont · 22/12/2011 20:32

Actually I may try it soon, but not at Christmas.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 22/12/2011 20:35

Ha, I was going to describe it as that further up the thread but refrained! I have tried it, but never wish to again.

Mum2Luke · 22/12/2011 22:06

Tender turkey with all the veg and roasties - yummmy! My hubby cooks it (I prepare the veg and clear up after) and it tastes delicious!

We just have 5 of us here and its lovely, cannot wait till Christmas Day!

Flanelle · 22/12/2011 22:42

Just 4 of us & I've bought the poshest chicken ever - superdelux! Have bought a turkey breast the last few years - butterflied it out, filled it with bread stuffing, sausagemeat stuffing and fresh cranberries, rolled it back up and wrapped it in bacon then roasted - it slices beautifully - but this year I just want a nice chicken. With yorkshires :-D

mammanetta · 22/12/2011 22:46

AllIWant nope - don't like turkey roast at all actually...but do love turkey curry a' la Bridget Jones :)
We tend to have either duck (French style with orange and cognac) or goose with cherries and red cabbage (DH is German) but this year as DD finally eating with us, making very simple roast chicken Italian-style (garlic, lemon, rosemary) which she loves too, with loads of small roasted potatoes and shallots, with red cabbage and apple on the side and fine green beans.
Has to be best M&S shortcrust pastry mince pies and brandy cream for pud though though fully intended to make my own this year again, and failed
Xmas Smile

memphis83 · 22/12/2011 22:48

Yorkies, Roast potatoes, roast parsnips... anything that is cooked in goose fat, the goose fat is a must!

mammanetta · 22/12/2011 22:48

chicken with yorkshires sounds fab Flanelle - bit like chicken pie!

was your posh bird one of those Bresson (?spelling?) ones? curious :)

even though I'm not a turkey fan, yours sounds really appealing.

Flanelle · 22/12/2011 23:05

No, not one of those .... so there's a POSHER chicken than mine out there somewhere? Xmas Envy

bebeinamanger · 23/12/2011 09:26

Roast potatoes, stuffing & good gravy & pigs in blankets...ooh & roast parsnips! Could live without the turkey!

Really looking forward to Brandy sauce with my pud, got a huge pot (can't make it like my mums so had to buy) and I'm the only one who likes it! Xmas Grin

OLizzylouofBethlehem · 23/12/2011 09:30

Chestnut stuffing
Just that.
Delish cold the next day as well.

skrumle · 23/12/2011 10:09

also love turkey moistmakers (a la friends) the day after...

mammanetta · 23/12/2011 10:50

Grin Flanelle
apparently some bloke on the telly (one of the Roux brother, or sons, I think) was banging on about it the other night and I was thinking you might be a posh bird with another posh bird Xmas Grin
mine never gets much posher than Waitrose, or local butcher Xmas Grin
