Father Christmas or Santa Claus?

Just a bit of a straw poll really. Was always Father Christmas in our house (latterly 'FC' when my sister and I were getting a bit cool, didn't believe but didn't want to miss out on the extra presents either!) This would be 70s-80s if it has a bearing. But now it always seems to be Santa.

Your thoughts/experiences?

always Father Christmas. Much to the amusement of DH since I am rather particular about it!

MyDingaling · 29/11/2011 13:43

Always Father Christmas

Either Santa Claus or Father Christmas but not just 'Santa' on it's own!

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 29/11/2011 13:57

Santa/Santy. Claus is optional but mostly used as children get a bit older.

Maybe it's a regional thing. I'm from the north end of the north east but did work experience at a school down in London and thoroughly confused a child when I told him the picture he was cutting out was of something beginning with an 'S'. He looked at it, then at me, then back at it before asking in a thoroughly puzzled tone 'Father Christmas...?'.

Santa here (Scotland)

cheeseandmarmitesandwich · 29/11/2011 18:26

Father Christmas. Though my 3yo said to me yesterday 'actually mummy, Father Christmas is Santa' so I guess she's getting mixed signals already!

watfordmummy · 29/11/2011 21:40

Santa - Scotland!

watfordmummy · 29/11/2011 21:43

Scotland historically didn't celebrate Christmas, ie my Dad worked Christmas day back in the early 60's. Therefore when started celebrating looked to America ie Santa. England didn't support Halloween and again looked to America for trick or treat whereas Scotland has guisers.

trixymalixy · 29/11/2011 21:46

Santa! (also in Scotland)

EdithWeston · 29/11/2011 21:48

Definitely Father Christmas for me - I like to hold on to some of the older Yule traditions, and remember his roots as the Green Man, Robin Goodfellow.

The Christian Santa Claus has almost completely supplanted him, though.

wigglesrock · 29/11/2011 21:51

We use Santa here (in NI), I honestly have never met anyone in real life who uses Father Christmas.
