We are not religious so don't do the god thing chrimbo is a time for family and gifts a nice..but reading a lot of the "I WANT" and didn't get or the crap, I've got the wrong thing sounds all a little bit middle class when people up and down the country have bugger all or will go into more debt to get the latest bit of landfill coz thats where it ends up....maybe we Mumsneters should pave a new way for Christmas and give to others 1st?????? discuss

Oh dear. another of THOSE threads

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 27/11/2011 19:19

Better to buy a gift for your dc that they use and appreciate than one they never use no?

And I'm sure most people like me, tend to buy for their dc's twice a year - Christmas and birthday and don't buy excessive amounts for them at any other times of the year. My ds has only asked for two things on his list to Father Christmas.

Hasn't hit a nerve at all. What's hitting a nerve is the slightly arrogant assumption that you know no-one is giving to charity, and that you know that everyone is spending excessive amounts on themselves for Christmas, and that people shouldn't spend a bit of their hard earned cash on themselves at this time of year.

My ds is attending a kids toy fair next month, where he'll sell all his outgrown toys and donate the proceeds to a charity that places entertainers in kids hospital wards. We've donated all his old books to a charity library and will donate to the school fundraiser next week.

latrucha · 27/11/2011 19:21

I do like you SarahSidle.

Honeydragon · 27/11/2011 19:24

Confused so am I allowed to buy the kids presents or are we campaigning for goats again?

I still haven't got my goat from last year you know Hmm

I love these sanctimonious threads where every single poster goes Confused wtaf are you talking about and the op goes

aha I was right!!!!!

and we all go

what about? Do you have any goats?

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2011 19:26

I may need extra paper and a new ink cartridge.

shineynewthings · 27/11/2011 19:34

YANBU definately. Christmas - have no idea what it's supposed to be about anymore other than making company shareholders more money. 1/5 charity 4/5 blantant materialism, over indulgence, pointless waste.

One big capitalist holiday.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 27/11/2011 19:34

Ink cartridge? Exams are more high tech than in my day!

can we use spell check

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2011 19:35

Hoping to get extra marks for beautiful handwriting leftmy. Wink

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2011 19:38

i am buying into the commercial side of christmas but we also celebrate christmas in other ways.,its not about me,me,me its about being together(weve 5 extra this year for dinner and atleast another 6 calling in throughout the day),having fun and much more.
I teach my children(and myself)to think of others all year round, not just at christmas. All year round they know that i wants dont get but i would like might.
I hate that posters make a sweeping statement, generalising other posters, blame class, come back saying 'see i was right!' and never actually make a valid point!

oh and more than anything i hate being told to 'discuss'Hmm when actually you mean 'my post isnt interesting enough to start a riot and ive got nothing better to do'

have a very merry christmas!Grin

Daftapath · 27/11/2011 19:41

I don't understand OP.

Am I not to buy my dcs any presents at all?

Or only presents that they do not want? I'll obviously spend the same amount of money on the things they don't want as that is all we can afford anyway.

Carrotsandcelery · 27/11/2011 19:42

Sally I agreed with you on the other thread but I don't feel the same here. I think if you looked at the other posts of a lot of the people there, you might find that they deal with a great deal more than worrying about if they have got the right thing. It may be that choosing the right gift is important because other aspects of that child's life have been so grim over the last 12 months. I know my dd's life has been. As I said on another thread, I just want her to know that in amongst it all she has been listened to and noticed. We all know that the material items don't solve everything but the act of thinking of others often does. It might be worth reading a bit more deeply into people's concerns before you make sweeping judgements. Hmm

verlainechasedrimbauds · 27/11/2011 19:45

Grin@ "my post seems to have hit a nerve".

supersallymum · 27/11/2011 20:01

WOW I'm new to mn....didn't think that there were so many angry people who could be so so rude about a simple topic...glad I'm not on your school runs

share, care, and apparently shout?

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 27/11/2011 20:04

Well your op was a little bit odd Sally!

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2011 20:04

Right. I have finished. I have written -

'NO'

Can't be arsed to do a retake. I'm dropping the subject altogether. Grin

supersallymum · 27/11/2011 20:09

wish I hadn't started it's mad me a bit sad...time for wine

OP posts:
Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 27/11/2011 20:09

And slightly sweeping...
And ever so slightly arrogant...
And, like your last post - ever so slightly passive aggressive.

I share your opinion about you joining my school run though...Grin Biscuit

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2011 20:11

why dont you start again but let us know what it is you want to know?

Honeydragon · 27/11/2011 20:27

Agree with CheeseSarnie start again especially if this is about another thread. You have just made a huge generalisation about a lot of people who post on here. If you are new you may not know about our gift campaign, or some of the truly wonderful generous acts that occur on Mnet every week and especially at Christmas.

And you definitely don't know about the goats yet but oh boy you'll find out if you stick around Grin

Carrotsandcelery · 27/11/2011 20:27

sally I have no desire to be mean but felt your original post and your further comments were mean themselves and showed a lack of empathy for the situations so many families find themselves in. Sad

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2011 20:31

honeydragon as always says it so much betterGrin.

supersallymum · 27/11/2011 20:33

Do you know what I have learned a lesson in this, if anyone was offended then sorry we are who we are

OP posts:
MortaIWombat · 27/11/2011 20:38

I have just happily celebrated the first Sunday in advent by having friends and their dc round for the lighting of the first candle on the advent wreath (homemade, natch), tea/coffee/beer and biscuits, and the joyful sound of many children running around beating each other up playing together.
Does this meet your expectation that Christmas is not entirely commercial, OP? Or would you have me read an improving verse from the Good Book, too?

You sound awfully pie, tbh.
