Chopped fruit, marshmallows and brownie pieces with dipping chocolate, or chocolate pudding. Christmas Pudding is too heavy considering what you've just eaten. I'm going for fruit and dipping chocolate this year. Smile

For the last few years we have bought a Christmas pudding but not eaten it due to being too full. This year, I was toying with the idea of making one, but as it is just the 4 of us again most of it will probably go to waste anyway. So instead I am making a retrotastic Black Forest chocolate roulade a la Jamie Oliver. Made it a couple of years ago and it was amazing, and it's the sort of thing we all prefer to Christmas pudding anyway

MercyDulbottle · 26/11/2011 11:47

A nice chocolate gateux, sara lee type but posher.

belledechocchipcookie · 26/11/2011 11:54

What about profiteroles?

TeWihara · 26/11/2011 12:06

In my family the traditional desert is Pavalova with kiwi, strawberries (if you can get any nice ones!) and pomegrante seeds.

BeaOnSea · 26/11/2011 12:10

Melt in the middle chocolate pudding. Tesco and Marks do one which is the same size/shape as a Christmas pudding.

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 12:21

Bleeeeugh Xmas pudding! I don't like it (or Xmas cake or mince pies Shock)

We have the extra difficulty in that DH (and one of his DDs) is coeliac. We will get some easy shop bought desserts but often we get GF cake mix (chocolate obviously). We've recently discovered a brand of gluten free pastry that isn't shite so we might do a pie or something. Ooh or maybe a trifle if we make some vanilla sponge.

The best thing we've done so far is mini baked alaskas - we got gluten free macaroons, put ice cream on them, spread meringue over them and blasted them in a hot oven. They were AMAZING.

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 12:22

We also make a mean Eton mess with bought meringue and fresh cream.

pigleychez · 26/11/2011 12:28

We tend to have little puds. Something like a sticky toffee pudding or chocolate melting pot with a scoop or two of ice cream!

CuriousCrissyRock4QueenMama · 26/11/2011 12:30

One year I made an ice cream bombe, lots of cream, orange uice and newberry fruits in it. I can't find the recipe though so may buy or make an ice cream cake with same sort of ingredients? It's very refreshing and so yummy.

ANiceCupofTeaandASitDown · 26/11/2011 13:05

We get a chocolate log with option of cream. Could not eat pudding after dinner so tend to have a bit of a clean up then have made plenty of room for choc log. Gosh this thread is making me hungry:-))

wheredidiputit · 26/11/2011 13:16

We don't bother with pudding, as no one wants any.

CuppaTeaJanice · 26/11/2011 13:20

We're usually so stuffed full of turkey and sprouts etc., that nobody has any room for pudding.

sunnyday123 · 26/11/2011 13:23

we never have christmas pudding! Can't stand it!! WE normally have a couple to choose from. Usually some sort of chocolate cake or pudding, cheese cake etc. Kids will eat the same or ice cream.

picnicbasketcase · 26/11/2011 13:25

You eat your Christmas dinner at about three, and then have pudding at seven, for tea. Surely?

In the last few years we've had gateau, pavlova, mince pies, chocolate trifle. Will probably choose two out of those and give people a choice.

flapperghasted · 26/11/2011 13:36

We always have tarte au citreon lovingly made by Sainsburys my own hand. We serve it with pouring cream. We have ice cream available for the small children and anyone who doesn't fancy tart.

Bellavita · 26/11/2011 13:43

Lemon posset is dead easy and can be made the day before to save time, serve in individual wine glasses ditto chocolate pots. Decorate the top of both with piped/spooned whipped double cream.

Homemade Profiteroles

Homemade Pavlova

workshy · 26/11/2011 13:46

we have profiteroles -already made them & they are in my freezer just hope I can avoid eating them until the big day

AngryFeet · 26/11/2011 13:53

Apple and blackberry crumble with custard. Best dessert ever!

girlywhirly · 26/11/2011 14:22

We used to have a chocolate roulade with mandarins and liqueur cream in it, but since it's just been the two of us, a small homemade mince pie and homemade vanilla icecream each.

PrancingBuffalo · 26/11/2011 14:50

Trifle - use sponge fingers or swiss roll, cover with frozen forest fruits mix (or whatever frozen berries you fancy), a sprinkle of icing sugar and a good splosh of Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Leave overnight to soak, then when you have a moment the next day, top with a carton of 'luxury' or 'finest' fresh custard, whipped double cream, and sugar sprinkles, silver balls, etc. Easy, and it must be good for you with all that fruit!

Peachy · 26/11/2011 14:56

We ahve a variety of food intols / allergies to contend with so there's a range. puds and mince pies are amde with pear instead of apples, ice creams with DF alternatives.

Christmas cheesecake (made with crumbled home made pear substitute pud)

Chocolate mousse

raspberry and cranberry crumble

Himalaya · 26/11/2011 15:01

I second triffle with sparkly balls/glitter on top and posh fruit and booze inside. It says snow/retro/tradition etc.. Without the Xmas pud and cake that no one really likes.

Also do a gingerbread house that kids destroy and eat.

I quite like the idea of black forest roulade too.

munstersmum · 26/11/2011 15:03

Family recipe trifle. No jelly but chocolate, chopped almonds & banana on soaked sponge (amaretto adults / orange juice kids), custard, cream, grated choc & decorations.

BawbagBiggins · 26/11/2011 15:11

We always have Frosty Pudding, which is confectioners custard mixed with fresh cream, raisons, sultanas, cherries and cinnamon (and mixed peel and flaked almonds if you like them).
Freeze it and then defrost while dinner is cooking. It's like Christmas Ice Cream.
