When I was little Santa bought you a bike or somethind your parents gave you a stack of toys and games.

What's the current thought on present giving?

Wow - never had anything big like that from Santa! Would usually be books, little games and small toys.

MrsPresley · 21/11/2011 13:16

I've always done it the "Santa only brings one gift " way, Mum and Dad give everything else along with what ever presents other people give them.

Santa brings the main present, bike, games console or whatever it happens to be. One year it was a mouth organ for one one of my DD's but that's what she asked for, so we definately outdone Santa that year Grin

I never let any of mine think that Santa could bring a never ending list, after all he has to give to the whole world, so 1 gift each!

wahwahwah · 21/11/2011 13:18

The problem is that DH has gone a bit mad this year and Santa will definately upstage us!

mrsmplus3 · 21/11/2011 13:24

we never got a thing from our parents , it was all from santa and thats what we do now with our kids. but now that im thinking about it, thats weird isnt it?
i mean, how selfish of my parents/us to not buy our kids a christmas gift?
god i hope they dont ever think about it too much. i never did, til now.

KWL51 · 21/11/2011 14:43

Stockings from fc presents downstairs from parents. Stocking only contain things like pens, pencil, ruler, novelty rubber, Xmas socks, choc lolly or coins.

cjbartlett · 21/11/2011 14:44

stockings from santa, everything else from us and family

insanityscratching · 21/11/2011 15:06

Stockings from Santa. He gets enough credit because the stocking contains things that I have already said are a waste of money or they aren't allowed Grin

AMumInScotland · 21/11/2011 15:21

Stockings from Santa, everything else from parents.

Santa shouldn't make you look mean
Children should understand money isn't unlimited just because it's Christmas
The pain/stress of whether or not Santa exists is reduced if he only brings the small stuff anyway
If other children get more, it's not because they have behaved better or Santa likes them more

Ambi · 21/11/2011 15:44

He brings everything in our house. Even though its from us all. He's just the delivery vehicle!

SnowChains · 21/11/2011 15:47

He brings the lot in ours. It is all under the tree, with one small present outside the bedroom door as a sign he has been and gone and safe to go down!

FrillyMilly · 21/11/2011 15:51

Dd is 3 so we haven't had to explain anything to her yet. Growing up mum and dad had to go see Santa to discuss what presents we would get and pay for them. The 3 of them decided if we had been good and how much they could afford. I was never under the illusion that santas elves made sega mega drives for free. I always imagined this meeting took place at toys r us with Geoffrey some how involved.

DooinMeCleanin · 21/11/2011 15:53

Santa brings it all and then sends mum and dad the bill.

pigleychez · 21/11/2011 17:42

Santa brings the stockings full of fun little things and smallish toys. Barbie Doll, watch etc

Plus One other present each.. This year Lalaloopsy Doll for DD1 and Magnetic Scribbler for DD2.

Everything else is from Us, Including their main presents - This year a huge amount of Happyland as a joint present.

RomanKindle · 21/11/2011 17:53

Same as pigley. Santa brings the stockings plus whatever present they ask for at the grotto.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/11/2011 20:35

Santa only gives stockings and everything else is from mum and dad - but he delivers all of it. And yes to Santa bringing things in the stocking that mum or dad wouldn't have allowed eg cocoa pops! :)

beanandspud · 21/11/2011 20:43

frilly I love the idea of your parents meeting with Santa and Geoffrey at ToysRUs to discuss what you might get - a sort of Christmas parents' evening Grin

marge2 · 21/11/2011 20:48

Well normally so far Santra has brought the 'big' presents. However, this year I am thinking abut buying 3DSs and there's no way Santa will ge the credit for that if Mum and Dad gifts will look cheap and crappy in comparison with what I have left over to spend. Sorry - the dross will NOT have my name it this year!

FrillyMilly · 21/11/2011 21:06

Beanandspud that's how I imagined it. Queues of parents waiting to discuss their children's presents. I brought it up with my mum and she thinks it came up because one (Thursday) night they wanted to go shopping for Xmas presents. I was mithering about why I couldn't go along and that's what she came up with.

ginmakesitallok · 23/11/2011 11:07

Santa brings everything in our house - we don't get gifts so that our dcs are grateful to us, we get them because of the look on their faces when Santa has been. Even presents from relatives have "From Santa" on them. However, now that DD1 is a bit older she is getting presents from granny as well as from Santa.

cjbartlett · 23/11/2011 11:12

I always think it's wierd when my friend says to my kids 'what d you want for xmas so that I can tell santa and he'll deleiver it for me'

and then she turns up wit a present for them before xmas

just stockings people, everything else is tagged from who it's from so they can be thanked!

wahwahwah · 23/11/2011 13:56

I used to think that my parents chose it from a catalogue and Santa brought it.

I still remember him managing to bring my new bike (it was purple) down the chimney - but the little basket on the front that I had specifically asked for had got stick up there (or so my mum said). I often wondered if it would ever fall down.

Daftapath · 23/11/2011 14:15

Stockings (also filled with things I have said are a waste of money) and one extra 'not over the top' present are bought by FC.

The rest is from us or whoever is on the tag, also so they can be thanked.

My two dcs are told that they can not be greedy, FC has lots to buy! They can write a list but it does not mean that they will get everything on it.

Friends have got into a pickle by saying they can ask for 3 things from FC and always giving the expensive things from him. Now their dcs think they can ask for anything from him and price does no matter.

Hopefully · 23/11/2011 14:33

Stocking from Santa, everything else from whoever it's from. Stockings didn't contain 'main' present, whatever it was.

notso · 23/11/2011 14:37

Father Christmas wins hands down, as we don't get them anything.
They get presents from extended family and friends which go under the tree, but Mums and Dads only buy if you stop believing.

It's what happened with DH and I when we were little, I didn't know anyone else did anything different until I had DD. Now it seems most people do the stocking thing.
