How to fill big sack for grown up when we are economising this year

My dh has big personalised Christmas sack for presents that I got him. So do my parents in fact. But we're economising this year and just getting a smallish lot of presents, which will get lost in such a big sack. Any ideas for how I can fill it up?

OP posts:

Why not move on from the sack? Does an adult man really need a sack full of gifts at Christmas?

But if that's a bit to dismal for you, why not fill it up with large fun things like a canvass to paint and a pack of paints...you could put a photo album in there...books..none of those cost much.

typicalvirgo · 11/11/2011 23:50

agree with mumblings first comment, seems a tad, err, odd.

why not get the kids to draw a huge picture and wrap it up.

or wrap the smaller presents in bigger boxes

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 11/11/2011 23:50

Why not have a stocking? I am a bit Hmm that a grown man has a whole sackload of presents!

If you really want to have the sack, then you could make it like a lucky dip and fill it two-thirds full of polystyrene and let him dig about for the presents in there.

do a give give give. GIVE to the Charity shop and buy him loads of presents from there, GIVE them to him, then GIVE back all the crap he doesnt like. Eco friendly and good alround and he still get a sack full of stuff.

Packs of sweets as bulkers! Or something big but quite cheap like a jigsaw
or a book.

YourMother · 12/11/2011 00:16

Not sure why I needed a new paragraph for that!

olibeansmummy · 12/11/2011 06:55

I'd downgrade to a stocking tbh Smile

jelliebelly · 12/11/2011 07:38

Could be the time to move on from a sack into the adult world!

Scootergrrrl · 12/11/2011 07:52

Balloons? Just to answer the question you actually asked Grin

exoticfruits · 12/11/2011 07:57

Ditch the sack and stick to parcels. (or make some smaller sacks!)

Buy lots of small cheap everyday things and multi packs to separate and wrap them individually.
Enough toiletries for the year ie deodrants, shaving foam, shower gel etc
Multi pack of socks
Get a book set from the book people
six pack of beer
Go on the moneysavingexpert website and find the freebie forum and send off for lots of free sample stuff

Sacks for husbands and inlaws? Fgs

SilveryMoon · 12/11/2011 08:21

I fill a small stocking for dp which is from the dc's.
I would not be getting a big sack's worth of presents for anyone if we needed a budget christmas (which we always do!)
I like the lucky dip idea though.
Maybe it's time to start some new traditions.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/11/2011 08:33

Um, my reading of this is that the OP bought her DH the sack (not that he'd ever asked or demanded it); that its now a tradition; and that presenting it with a couple of little things rattling round in the bottom would just emphasise the economy drive and just be a bit of a downer. I don't think its odd, its nice.

Any chance he'd appreciate a fluffy new pillow Grin (seriously thats the sort of thing my DH actually would like).

DD made my DH a kite for his birthday, that was quite big.

exoticfruits · 12/11/2011 08:40

I think that her DH is old enough to cope with a change in traditions.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/11/2011 08:46

Doubtless he can - but if the OP follows some of the ideas on this page it can remain, cheap and cheerful.

Traditions like this are often as not for the kids rather than the adult - my DD loves helping me wrap up stuff for other people and having them open it.

exoticfruits · 12/11/2011 08:47

It is quite simple then, make a new sack (much smaller).

ZacharyQuack · 12/11/2011 08:47

A tricycle?

ZacharyQuack · 12/11/2011 08:48

Put the turkey in the sack, along with a sack of spuds.

"Surprise darling!"

HoneyPablo · 12/11/2011 08:50

I would do something daft like replace the sack with a sock with a chocolate bar with a little note from santa apologising about the cutbacks.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 12/11/2011 08:57

is it made of material?

If so sew down the sides so the inside is smaller but it will still look like it is filled up

attheendoftheday · 12/11/2011 09:13

Grin at Zachary

WhoWhoWhoWho · 12/11/2011 09:16

A sack full of presents for a grown up? Confused

I agree with the suggestion of making a smaller sack/making the original into a smaller one, or buying a stocking.
