Christmas Presents for Teacher!

SuzieP29 · 09/11/2011 12:48

I am already beginning to think about what to get my kids teachers for Xmas! The youngest has been talking about it - with fanciful ideas of jackets from Debenhams and a fish tank being a couple of her bright ideas- but I have two so clearly can't quite afford that!

Anyone got any good suggestions? I'd like something other than the usual box of Roses or scented drawer liners! (Under £10 too!)

I've gone for books this year, nothing too chick lit or highbrow as I dont know their taste but I thought they must get fed up with chocolates and smellies. Will get dd to make bookmarks to personalise.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 09/11/2011 18:46

I would avoid mugs too, I think they get a lorry load of them.

I didn't have the guts to buy a bottle of wine or Baileys for DS reception teacher, but some folks did. (I'd always appreciate another bottle in the cabinet at Christmas though)

I know smellies are a bit personal but I would never say no to a small tube of Molten Brown Handcream.

Here in Switzerland the big thing is getting the kids to make and ice cookies to hang off the tree then put them in lovely wrappers for the teacher.

Books/Book voucher is a lovely idea monkey

leftmydignityatthedoor · 09/11/2011 19:24

Not sure about the under 10 quid bit but a cinema voucher?

Ismeyes · 09/11/2011 20:09

DD (5) wants me to get her two teachers nice pens because apparently they write ALOT.

Dee03 · 09/11/2011 20:16

Smelly candles, plants, notepad and pen set, tin of biscuits .....Smile

pigleychez · 09/11/2011 20:26

Not teachers as such but nursery staff. Theres 8 of them.
Ive made little personalised Gingerbread decorations for them (pics of profile) and intend to make a big batch of cupcakes to take in.
My cupcakes are very popular with friends and family so they cant be too bad :)

Dee03 · 09/11/2011 20:51

That sounds fab pigley...I'm a preschool teacher and if I get anything it's just the usual chocs..... Not that I don't appreciate them u understand Grin

serin · 09/11/2011 21:07

Pigley ! WOW !

Your gingerbread men are indeed very nice but your photos are just gorgeous, adorable and I am very jealous>. I wish we had taken photos like that when DD was small.

serin · 09/11/2011 21:10

Oh forgot to mention that MandS have a special offer on chutneys, preserves and other Christmas goodies like brandy butter etc at the mo. You get any 3 for £2.

I am planning on getting each teacher 6 items (£4 each) and making them up into little hampers. Does this sound ok?

TheOnlyWayIsEnfield · 09/11/2011 21:20

As a teacher, I like getting things I can eat, drink, or use up. Nice tea/coffee, chocolates, biscuits, posh smellies, wine, candles, something like that is lovely. That way, if you get something you might not choose for yourself you don't have to keep it, but you still get to enjoy it. You sound very thoughtful, thank you for thinking of us and not just moaning about how we go on strike, are lazy etc! Thanks

letmehelp · 09/11/2011 21:27

I usually give handcream, for the reason Enfield says - it gets used up and even if it's not a favourite brand, most people will use handcream

sunnyday123 · 09/11/2011 23:08

wow serin you spend a lot!!! £24!! £10 is my max and i do begrudge that in a way as its more peer pressure - they do get paid too! i got dd teacher lovely stuff year and never got so much as i thank you - they collected the gifts like they expected them! :( Plus dd never sees her now as she has another teacher! It'll be a waterstones voucher this year or wine!

Eggrules · 09/11/2011 23:15

feck I was going to make something with DS.

My sil is a teacher and gives a lot of her pressies away. It has put me off buying anything (bah humbug)

beachyhead · 09/11/2011 23:20

My friend had a great idea....she bought an empty hamper and emailed the class and they all bought something and brought it in and placed it in the hamper.. (which she had placed in the classroom). So each kid spent about £5 and the teacher got a lovely collection....

cece · 09/11/2011 23:24

Bottle of wine pretty much always well received.

IHeartKingThistle · 09/11/2011 23:33

Last year we had a lot of nursery staff to buy for as well. DD chose a really beautiful Christmas bauble for each of them. It was a lovely outing to do - 'Oooh! Mrs Jones would LOVE that one!' etc. They seemed be well received too (and don't clutter up the house!). A student (once) did this for me and every year I think of him when I put it on the tree.

I always get jealous when I read these threads. Secondary teachers get bugger all.

Carrotsandcelery · 10/11/2011 10:34

As I said on another thread a nice hand soap pump might go down well. It gets used up so doesn't create clutter but it might also be a bit more luxurious than what you would buy for yourself.

This year I have got the teachers page a day Origami calendars. It was inspired by my dd as her teacher was doing some origami with them. I thought they could be fun in the classroom so not cluttering their home. The teacher could even use it as a reward - whoever does X the way she wants gets to try today's origami.

In the past I have also given mini coffee trays, mini chopping boards, hand creams, music vouchers and little purses from Accessorise. A lot depends upon the age and interests of the teacher - I learn a lot by asking the dcs what their teacher likes.

The christmas bauble idea is an excellent one too.

marssparklesdownonme · 10/11/2011 13:49

I've posted this before ; many years ago, a lovely little girl called Katie gave me a tree ornament in th shape of an old fashioned train, as we had been on a visit to a vintage steam museum that term. I still put it on my tree, 18 years later .

IHeartKingThistle · 10/11/2011 14:11

Oh mars I'm sure it was that story last year that gave me the idea! How lovely.

pigleychez · 10/11/2011 17:05

I thought of the bauble idea too but had a 'Making' pang. Hence the Gingerbread men! :)

Serin- Thanks for the comments... Photography is another of my Hobbies :) I love trying out new things on my girls and have even done a few paid shoots for people!

myBOYSareBONKERS · 10/11/2011 18:17

I have got the teachers a bracelet from NEXT so it has a gift receipt

bytheMoonlight · 10/11/2011 18:22

I think I'm going to take dd2 on an outing into town and pick four nice ornaments for her teachers

AshaBoo · 10/11/2011 20:28

I will be making something with DD1 (P1)

I do not understand why teachers get presents. I have been a nurse for 20 years, and I am not allowed to accept personal gifts.

Will my daughter get a hard time because of my actions?

LadyInPink · 10/11/2011 21:04

Sunnyday123 i think you misunderstood serins post. She will be buying 6 items that cost £4 in total and probably for 2 teachers max so it's only costing her £8 altogether which is a steal.

I tend to make homemade gingerbread or fudge with DD for her teachers and put them in Xmassy bags and cellophane - always gets appreciative comments too Smile

Harecare · 10/11/2011 21:14

ashaboo of course not.
A few of the Mum's in DDs class have suggested all chipping in and getting vouchers, but I am not going to chip in. I shall try to explain why without sounding mean.
I like her, but I have a large Christmas list of family and friends and I have to draw the line somewhere. I will be putting together toys etc for the shoebox appeal for children who get nothing, that is more important to me. We shall make her a card, but I doubt she needs or expects anything from her class.
