Questions about Mini Micro Scooter - anyone's DC have one?

BatEtherWitches · 02/11/2011 06:59

DD has asked for a scooter for Christmas - planning to get her a mini micro scooter (like this

Only problem is, we are going abroad for Christmas, (by plane) and will need to either take it with us, or have her wait until we get home for her present.

Obviously I want her to be able to open it on Christmas day and use it while we are away, as it will probably be a bit disappointing for a 4 year old to have to wait!

Presumably when you first buy them they are flat-packed - how easy would it be to dismantle it again so we can pack it in hold luggage when we fly home? And how heavy is it? - website doesn't seem to say. We are flying Easyjet so have to pay for hold baggage, but presumably wouldn't be allowed to put it in cabin baggage...

Yes it comes flat in a box so you could just wrap the box to put in hold. It does dismantle too - there is a red clip thing underneath and you can push this in to remove the handle. A bit fiddly but we do it a lot to sling it under the buggy. Not sure about weight I'm afraid.

hi got dd aged 4 one for her bday last month - they come in 2 pieces which click together - not tried unclicking but presume so?! Its VERY light so weight wise will be fine in a suitcase - just a bit awkward with the wheels. They are fab!!!! We have gone through loads of cheap scooters over the years and they are no good - dd aged 6 is getting the maxi for xmas!

sunnyday123 · 02/11/2011 07:08

dont know exact weight but dd aged 4 can carry it easily with one hand and is a slight for her age!

Besom · 02/11/2011 07:14

Our scales have gone caput so I can't weigh it but yes, it is light. Judging by the weight of a kilo tub of margerine in my fridge, it isn't a great deal heavier, and feels quite a lot lighter than 2 litre bottle of water . Sorry, hope that helps.

BatEtherWitches · 02/11/2011 07:55

Thanks, that is really helpful! Looks like it should be do-able to take it with us then :)

Just a thought...is your daughter small for her age? If not it might be worth going straight to the maxi scooter. I bought the maxi last year for DD when she was a taller-than-average 4 (i.e. in age 5 clothes) and it was just the right height for her. DS has had the mini since he was 2, and he is average height!

bunnyspoiler · 02/11/2011 16:24

I would second buying a 4 year old the maxi scooter. At it's lowest height settings it is as short as the mini. It's a little heavier and wider but at 4 I would say it's fine.

BatEtherWitches · 02/11/2011 16:49

Just looked at the maxi and they are twice the price! DD is about average height, but v slight; she'll turn 4 in mid December. Will the mini be a good fit now? (If it will be all right for the next couple of years then it can be passed on to DD2, so we will still get our money's worth)

they're pretty light, and easy to dismantle.

my 4 year old has one and loves it!

bunnyspoiler · 02/11/2011 17:06

you won't get 2 years out of it, height wise. Maybe 1 year max, have you a shop near you so you can try it? It's pretty short.

sunnyday123 · 02/11/2011 18:27

my dd aged 4 is fine as his dd aged 6 - my 6 year old could get another year if she wanted to but i'm getting her the maxi as its makes more sense but i believe the maxi is heavier for lifting and it looks far to big for my 4yr old. Its definitely fine for a 4yr old.

bunnyspoiler · 02/11/2011 19:51

Really sunnyday ? Gosh, my DD is 6 and very average for her age size wise and the mini is way too small in height for her. She hunches over it, can still use it but posture is terrible. Has been the case for over a year.

JujyFruits · 02/11/2011 20:11

My tall 4 yo is fine on hers I can see it lasting her a couple more years. My 8 year niece even plays on it! They're incredibly light and fold up quite small so I think you'll be fine.

tummytickler · 02/11/2011 20:16

oooh - I have bought one for my 4 year old for Christmas. He was 4 in August and not enormous, so hopefully he will be fine. A bit nervous now - an annoying and expensive mistake to make if I got it wrong!

bunnyspoiler · 02/11/2011 20:22

The height is 66.5 cm OP, just hold a ruler up and you'll see if your DC is likely to fit it for a bit. max weight 20kg, am sure most 6 year olds are heavier than that.

wonderwooman · 02/11/2011 20:32

I second considering buying the Maxi...
DS2, who's 4, is getting the maxi for Christmas. This is partly because DS3 now needs the Mini Micro but DS2 rides his big brother's Maxi with no problems.
I also think they're more stable.

pramsgalore · 02/11/2011 20:54

i would also buy the maxi, my small 5 year old has a maxi on the lowest setting and loves it. it will last so much longer, i will get my 3 year old a maxi next summer holidays, i don't see the point in the mini unless you are getting it for a 2 year old to be honest

MorallyBankrupt · 02/11/2011 21:19

Go for the Maxi. DS is 3.9 and has practically grown out of the mini. He'll be getting the Maxi for Christmas. The mini is really for 2-3 year olds I think.

sunnyday123 · 03/11/2011 07:10

honestly i think it must depend on the child - my dd aged 4 can only just manage the mini!

BatEtherWitches · 03/11/2011 08:19

I am a bit torn now Grin.

DD is very physically unconfident (I am amazed and delighted that she wants a scooter tbh), so probably I will go for the mini if it is lighter as then should be more manageable. I don't want to get something that she might struggle with in case it makes her lose confidence again. Also the mini comes in pink, and she has actually requested a pink scooter.

I will hold a ruler up to her as suggested, that is a good idea. I know she is 101cm tall as I just measured her the other day. And I doubt she'll weigh anywhere near 20kg when she is 6, she is only just 13kg now, so that should be OK!

OP posts:
bunnyspoiler · 03/11/2011 09:34

blimey that puts her in the 1st centile. She'll probably be ok on a mini then.

tummytickler · 03/11/2011 09:48

I am a bit torn now too Bat I have already bought the mini. Maybe I should sell it on ebay, and get a maxi. Trouble is, we are not terribly rich this year, and they are rather expensive! But if we would have to buy him a maxi next summer anyway, maybe i should just get it.

bunnyspoiler · 03/11/2011 10:07

What height and weight is he tummytickler ?

maxybrown · 03/11/2011 10:49

depends on height, my DS is 4 and he is still absolutely without a doubt fine on the mini. He is light, prob about 14kg and height wise about 100cm

maxybrown · 03/11/2011 10:50

Bat if she is not very confident then def go for the mini then
